Integrated System Display

SPACE SAVING Use as a single display for multiple auxiliary systems. Subsystems that were typically installed in the drivers cab can now be installed at other convenient places in the locomotive

COST SAVING Subsystems that were typically installed in the drivers cab can

now be designed without any Human Machine Interface

DIAGNOSTICS Diagnose any of the protocols by means of the diagnostic utilities in the software

Trains have limited space in the drivers console for display systems. That is where the ISD comes in. It serves as a Human Machine Interface for other systems in the train. The ISD makes use of three protocols over the LAN to interface to other devices. Any of these protocols can be used by potential subsystems. The user interface can be customised in terms of the colour scheme, font sizes and

sounds played. The train driver can choose which subsystem he wants to see in the display area. If any connected system raises an alarm, the screen immediately jumps to the display of that system.

Serves as a single Human Machine Interface in the drivers console

Subsystems can request to play sound files on the ISD console 2 level brightness control for day or night viewing

16 programmable buttons Qualified to railway specifications

Touch screen for added convenience console

The ISD Digital Key acts as a ‘key’ (security feature) for the driver to access the system. The Digital Key stores

all necessary information for the driver (e.g. driver, ID and train no., route maps & trip recording) and enables

the technician to access debug screens.

USB ports on front panel for file upload and download

Train Cab System

VOICE COMMS The train driver can converse with the Train Control Officer

LOCATION REPORTS The TCS reports position on specific locations and /

or time intervals

SPEED PROFILE The TCS displays the upper and lower speed limit to the driver for

the particular train consist, location and direction of the train

LINE PROFILE The unit displays a map of the rail ahead to the driver with

elevation information. The driver can see the complete train in relation to the rest of the infrastructure, signals, etc.

INFO ZONES The unit displays pop up messages to driver when train enters

specific areas allocated by the Train Control Officer

OTA CAPABILITY All information can be updated Over-The-Air

Initially designed as a voice communication system, the capability of the TCS has grown over the past years to much more than that. The system employs two GSM modems to enable voice and data communications to the rail infrastructure.

An onboard GPS provides position information which enables location based reporting, speed and line profile information and tracking capabilities. The system provides vital information to the driver and asset tracking

information to the Train Control Officer.

LCD with SVGA resolution and high brightness Spare I/O to connect to other devices

Touch screen and 16 buttons for user input LAN interface

SAFETY The Auxiliary Display Unit shows all the vital train parameters to the assistant driver who is

co-responsible for the safe handling of the train

EASY TO READ The ADU has 20mm displays to ensure readability in any ambient light condition

RUGGED Qualified to railway specifications

INTERFACE The unit interfaces to the Train Control System where it receives all information via a RS485 port using a HDLC protocol

Train drivers can usually see all vital train handling parameters from the display systems on the drivers console in front

of them. The assistant driver who is co-responsible for the train does not have access to it. The Auxiliary Display System

bridges this gap and gives the assistant driver access to these parameters. The fact that the assistant driver has access to

the viewing of these parameters makes for a much safer trip.

Displays normal and slow train speed

Displays the Notch position of the train

Displays the brake demand as a % or the brake pressure in kPa

Indicates whether the train is coasting, braking or motoring

Qualified to railway specifications

INFORMATION The Train Definition Unit sends messages to the the

rail operators’ servers informing them of each locomotive that is active and who the train driver is.

DISPLAY The Train Definition unit has a 2 x 16 character

Liquid Crystal Display.

RUGGED Rugged and robust construction

INTERFACE The unit interfaces to the TRITON via a PoE port.

The protocol employed is UDP.

The TDU is connected to the TRITON unit via a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The train driver enters his personnel number

together with the 16 digit Sprint train number. The information is sent via the TRITON unit to the TFR infrastructure.

This enables TFR to ‘track and trace’ all trains. The driver information is combined with this information.

Messages are sent to the TFR server at the start of each trip, end of each trip as well as periodically in between.

Indicates whether the train is coasting, braking or motoring Train driver enters 16 digit train number and his personnel number (SAP number)

The unit has a 3 x 4 keypad for alphanumeric data entry The unit has a 1 x 4 arrow keypad for navigation through the menus

Selectable technician mode for setup purposes. All parameters are user programmable via the keypads Qualified to railway specifications

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM Ansys Rail leads the way in Vehicle Identification Systems (VIS) for the rail industry.

Ansys Rail designed and implemented South Africa’s first major VIS system for Transnet Freight Rail

and is involved on an ongoing basis in refining the logistic support applications.

Locomotives and Wagons are fitted with passive RF tags (much like standard access cards,

just much larger). Each tag is programmed with the unique ID number of the specific vehicle. Vehicle identification

readers are installed countrywide and as the train passes these sites, the information contained in the tag is read

by the readers. When the train has passed the site, the full train consist is sent via General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)

to a central database from where viewer programs can access

the data. This information provides optimisation of vehicle

assignments as well as real time tracking of rolling stock.

HOT BEARING DETECTORS The Hot Bearing Detector (HBD) system is installed to measure bearing temperatures of rail vehicles moving up

to 240km/h. Temperatures are measured with 2% accuracy, and as soon as the temperatures are outside

the defined range, alarms are triggered and the train is stopped to prevent de-railings.

The HBD system can be used on electrified as well as non-electrified lines.

Trackside Management

WHEEL PROFILE MONITORING SYSTEM The Wheel Profile Monitoring System (WPMS) consists of 14 high speed cameras and lasers to measure the dimensions

of the wheels of rail vehicles. The measured data is then compared with the required dimensions of the wheel.

Alarm levels are defined for each, which are used for maintenance information and scheduling

LOAD PROFILE MONITORING SYSTEMS The Load Profile Monitor System (LPMS) monitors passing trains and detects

any objects or freight exceeding height and width gauge requirements.

The technology behind the system is based on interrupting an optical signal

path emitted from the source (a Class II 625nm laser) via a prismatic reflector

to a detector. If left undetected, out of gauge freight could cause damage to

trackside infrastructure such as bridges, tunnels and signalling equipment.
