CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The growing concern with environmental issues and their impact on general awareness is one of the most noticeable phenomena of the last two decades. Increase in economic activities in developing countries results in more energy and consumption demand which generally leads to environmental degradation. There is a conventional belief that such environmental degradation would resolve as soon as these countries grow economically, since that would enable them to afford environmental friendly technology as well as pro environmental regulations and policies. However, several studies indicated that many developing countries already equipped with environmental policies, legal frameworks and economic instruments, which are regarded as highly sophisticated by international standards (Huber et al, 1998, Fujisaki et al, 1997) and yet face the worsening of environmental conditions. Major difficulties these countries confront are not only the lack of legal and economic framework for environmental protection, but also lack of participation among general public in pro environmental behaviors. Some of the environmental problems which are critical at the present are fairly widely known because of the growing awareness of all levels of society, including governments, general public and the scientific community. However, the present study is trying to discuss the environmental awareness and practice among college students in Tamil Nadu. The fact that people from different cultures act with a nationalistic awareness, which is seen as one of the biggest problems of globalization, is taken into consideration. It will be inevitable for us to face the fact that it would not be easy to find a solution to environmental problems. India has more than 40% of young people in the world. The sensitizations and practice of environmental manner is will improve the present environmental conditions.

Objective Of Study:-

7

Page 8: Rahul patil project

The specific aspects to study would be

1) To find out the factors in creating environmental awareness

2) To evaluate the role of modern mass media in this process

3) To explore how much people are spending on environmental issues

4) To know peoples understanding environment management

5) To assess the importance of education in creating environmental awareness

6) To assess the level of environmental awareness

Limitation of study

1. The data has been taken for a period of 1 month.2. The present study has been carried out in the Aurangabad region only.3. The study has been carried out with limited sample size of 50.4. The limited statistical tools have been used.

Scope of environmental studies:-

8

Page 9: Rahul patil project

Environmental studies discipline has multiple and multilevel scopes. This study is important and necessary not only for children but also for everyone. The scopes are summarized as follows:

1. The study creates awareness among the people to know about various renewable and nonrenewable resources of the region. The endowment or potential, patterns of utilization and the balance of various resources available for future use in the state of a country are analyzed in the study.

2. It provides the knowledge about ecological systems and cause and effect relationships.

3. It provides necessary information about biodiversity richness and the potential dangers to the species of plants, animals and microorganisms in the environment.

4. The study enables one to understand the causes and consequences due to natural and main induced disasters (flood, earthquake, landslide, cyclones etc.,) and pollutions and measures to minimize the effects.

5. It enables one to evaluate alternative responses to environmental issues before deciding an alternative course of action.

6. The study enables environmentally literate citizens (by knowing the environmental acts, rights, rules, legislations, etc.) to make appropriate judgments and decisions for the protection and improvement of the earth.

7. The study exposes the problems of over population, health, hygiene, etc. and the role of arts, science and technology in eliminating/ minimizing the evils from the society.

8. The study tries to identify and develop appropriate and indigenous eco-friendly skills and technologies to various environmental issues.

9. It teaches the citizens the need for sustainable utilization of resources as these resources are inherited from our ancestors to the younger generating without deteriorating their quality.

10. The study enables theoretical knowledge into practice and the multiple uses of environment.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:-

The investigator adopted “survey method “and “random sampling Technique” to collect data. The teacher trainees form the population for the study. The sample is 300; the investigator has planned to take of around 5% of the population about the sample. Therefore out of 35 Teacher Training Institutes from the investigator has taken 7 or 8 Teacher Training Institutions located around Tricky. From each Teacher Training Colleges the Investigator has taken out 35-40 students satisfying the population as male and female.

The investigator perused the tools available in the market. Since there is no standard tool available for assessing the ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS, The investigator worked out strategy to prepare and validate his own research tool studying the environmental awareness.

To establish the item validity of the tool, a pilot study was done. Reliability was established by test retest method.

The data collected were statistically analyzed and conclusions were drawn. For establishing the validity for the prepared draft tool the investigator made use of content validity and item validity. Statistical techniques like percentage analysis, Differential analysis, and Correlation analysis were used to analyze the data.

What is The Research:-

Research is searching for and gathering information, usually to answer a particular question or problem. Research projects of various types and complexity are an integral part of the college experience and offer you the opportunity to learn a valuable set of skills. In fact, the ability to locate and evaluate information - which is the essence of research and a valuable skill in many areas of life - is a large part of what it means to be an educated person.

Page 11: Rahul patil project

Data collection method:-

Commonly used methods for collecting quantitative data include telephone and face-to-face interviews, self-completion questionnaires (such as mail, email, web-based or SMS) or combinations of these.

Each has advantages and disadvantages in terms of the cost, time, response/consent rate and the type of information that can be collected.

Self-completion surveys: - via mail, email, the internet or SMS are generally the least expensive, particularly for a widespread sample. They allow respondents time to consider their answers, refer to records or consult with others (which can be helpful or unhelpful, depending on the survey’s objectives). They also eliminate interviewer errors and reduce the incidence of selected people (or units) being unable to be contacted.

A major disadvantage of self-completion surveys is the potentially high non-response. In such cases, substantial bias can result if people who do not complete the survey have different characteristics from those who do. However, response can be improved using techniques such as well-written introductory letters, incentives for timely return of questionnaires and follow-up for those initially not responding.

In self-completion surveys there is no opportunity to clarify answers or supplement the survey with observational data. In mail surveys the questionnaire usually has to be simple and reasonably short, particularly when surveying the general community. Internet and email-based surveys are commonly used for surveying clients or staff within organizations and allow more complex questionnaires to be used than mail surveys do.

11

Page 12: Rahul patil project

SURVEY METHOD:-

The following is an outline of the general process to be followed once the need for a survey has been determined. Some steps will not be necessary in all cases and some processes can be carried out at the same time (for example, data collection and preparation for data entry and processing).

A sample survey is cheaper and timelier than a census but still requires significant resources, effort and time. The survey process is complex and the stages are not necessarily sequential. Pilot testing of, at least, key elements such as the questionnaire and survey operations is an essential part of the development stage. It may be necessary to go through more than one cycle of development, testing, evaluation and modification before a satisfactory solution is reached.

The entire process should be planned ahead, including all critical dates. It is always beneficial to approach QGSO or prospective consultants as early as possible during this planning stage.

The time required from initial planning to the completion of a report or publication may vary from several weeks to several months according to the size and type of survey.

HYPOTHESES OF THE STUDY:-

1. The level of environmental awareness of teacher trainees in teacher training institutes in Tricky and its dimensions is average.

2. The level of participation in extension activities of teacher trainees in teacher training institutes in Tricky is average.

3. The level of environmental awareness of teacher trainees in teacher training institutes in Tricky with regard to their gender is average.

4. There is no significant difference in environmental awareness of teacher trainees in teacher training institutes in Tricky with regard to their gender

Environmental history:- Is the study of human interaction with the natural world over time. In contrast to other historical disciplines, it emphasizes the active role nature plays in influencing human affairs. Environmental historians study how humans both shape their environment and are shaped by it.

Environmental history emerged in the United States out of the environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and much of its impetus still stems from present-day global environmental concerns.[1] The field was founded on conservation issues but has broadened in scope to include more general social and scientific history and may deal with cities, population or sustainable development. As all history occurs in the natural world, environmental history tends to focus on particular time-scales, geographic regions, or key themes. It is also a strongly multidisciplinary subject that draws widely on both the humanities and natural science.

The subject matter of environmental history can be divided into three main components. [2] The first, nature itself and its change over time, includes the physical impact of humans on the Earth's land, water, atmosphere and biosphere. The second category, how humans use nature, includes the environmental consequences of increasing population, more effective technology and changing patterns of production and consumption. Other key themes are the transition from nomadic hunter-gatherer communities to settled agriculture in the neolithic revolution, the effects of colonial expansion and settlements, and the environmental and human consequences of the industrial and technological revolutions.[3] Finally, environmental historians study how people think about nature - the way attitudes, beliefs and values influence interaction with nature, especially in the form of myths, religion and science.

Environmental Awareness:-

13

Page 14: Rahul patil project

Environmental awareness is to understand the fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection. Promoting environmental awareness is an easy way to become an environmental steward and participate in creating a brighter future for our children.

What is Environmental Awareness?:

To define environmental awareness we must first understand the environmentalist movement. Environmentalism is an ideology that evokes the necessity and responsibility of humans to respect, protect, and preserve the natural world from its anthropogenic (caused by humans) afflictions.

Environmental awareness is an integral part of the movement’s success. By teaching our friends and family that the physical environment is fragile and indispensable we can begin fixing the problems that threaten it.

Numerous resources are available to promote environmental awareness; group learning (in or outside of class), informational and inspirational seminars, such as our Awakening the Dreamer Program, and environmental books and brochures are just a few of the tools that can get you involved in promoting the environment

14

Page 15: Rahul patil project

Environmental education:-

The most important landmark for environmental education at an international level was without a doubt the International Conference on Environmental Education organized by UNESCO and UNEP at Tbilisi in former USSR in 1977. The goals of environmental education were defined as creating environmental awareness, impart general knowledge for a basic understanding of environment, acquiring environmental friendly attitudes and values and to generate new patterns of behavior towards environment. The more recently held United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992, popularly known as the Earth Summit, adopted an action plan for Sustainable Development, Agenda 21. Chapter 36 which is devoted to education states that "Education is critical for promoting sustainable development and improving the capacity of people to address environment and development issues"(100). Education without communication is simply impossible. Communication in turn will only work with an appropriate medium. In the case of environmental education at educational establishments classes at school, college or universities level serve as this medium. As far as environmental education outside educational establishments is concerned mass media and traditional media like family, neighbors and colleagues have the role of the medium that enables people to communicate successfully. In the following paragraph these three different kinds of media (institutional, mass and traditional media) will be examined to find out on their efforts made in creating environmental awareness and how more or less successful they are.

Awareness about Environmental Protection:-

In the past two decades, environment has attracted the attention of decision makers, scientists and even laymen in many parts of the world. They are becoming increasingly conscious of issues such as famines, droughts, floods, scarcity of fuel, firewood and fodder, pollution of air and water, problems of hazardous chemicals and radiation, depletion of natural resources, extinction of wildlife and dangers to flora and fauna. People are now aware of the need to protect the natural environmental resources of air, water, soil and plant life that constitute the natural capital on which man depends. The environmental issues are important because the absence of their solutions is more horrible. Unless environmental issues are not solved or not taken care of the coming generations may find earth worth not living. The need of the planet and the needs of the person have become one. There is no denying the fact that environment has to be protected and conserved so to make future life possible. Indeed, man's needs are increasing and accordingly the environment is also being altered, indeed, nature's capacity is too accommodating and too regenerative yet there is a limit to nature's capacity, especially when pressure of exploding population and technology keep mounting. What is required is the sustenance, conservation and improvement of the changing and fragile environment.

15

Page 16: Rahul patil project

The Concept of Sustainable Development

The world commission on environment and development (the Brundtland commission) submitted its report entitled “Our common future’ in 1987. This report highlighted and popularized the concept of 'sustainable development'. Sustainable development has been defined on meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the need of future generations. All developmental activities involve some amount of environmental degradation. What is required is to take into account the damage to environment as a result of development, and strike a balance between development and environmental protection. The aim should be to achieve sustainable levels of people's welfare and development. The primary concern is how many people can ultimately be supported by environment and at what level of quality of life. The mainstream greens scholars like Carr, Brown, Dala, Schumacher. Does not make sense and others, all lay stress on "sustainability" of environment together with development.

The emphasis of the mainstream green' are not on pollution, but on

(1) Energy and its resource may be renewed, and be kept renewing,

(2) The waste is changed into raw-material, raw-material into waste, waste into raw- material: recycling of waste into raw-material;

(3) Gross national product and its growth targets need not be sought, but what should be sought is the satisfaction of real human needs'. The greens say that growth means cancer, a cancer that threatens to spread worldwide, and destroy all life.

They accept industry if it is on small scale and is for purpose of self-sufficiency. They advocate extensive decentralization. The concept of sustainable development is more about environment and less about development; more about stability and less about change; more about restricting one's wants and less about the continuing material development more about the non-exploitative attitude towards environment and less about harnessing it; more about small communities and less about the larger ones. It is not a concept of development with environment, but is environment without growth. Indeed, ecological degradation should stop. But why should the pace of development stop? A disciplined uses of environmental benefits go a long way for all round development. Scholars and activists assert that environmental degradation can be controlled and reversed only by ensuring that the parties causing the damage should be made accountable for their action and that they should participate in improving environmental conditions. What is needed is a set of norms, which bring the demands of development and the compulsion of environment closer to each other.

Finding and Conclusion:-

This study gives clear evidence that the role of media in creating environmental awareness is definitively a dominant one. This thesis can be supported with different arguments: On the one hand, the results of the household survey show that more than half of the interviewees (52%) are convinced that the information provided by media has been most important in making them aware of environmental problems, followed by 38% who thought that it was their own confrontation with pollution in everyday life, while education at school or other institutions was considered to be most important in creating environmental awareness by only 7% of the interviewed
