8. RADIUS is the alternative to chemical weed control.
Dear customer!
With RADIUS 860 Selection, you have acquired the best alternative to chemical weed
control.
With RADIUS 860 Selection it is easy to keep the area between the plants clean. A fast
forwarding tractor speed is reached due to the easy going single-acting control. The soil
around the plants is loosened quickly and precisely.
The single-acting hydraulic system helps to avoid the plants continuously, with small as well
as with large oil supply and even with fast forwarding speed. Even when the plants are angled
forward it is possible to drive with RADIUS, due to the easily adjustable sensor unit.
With the CLEMENS RADIUS 860 Selection you get a product with perfected technique and
a simple and easy to handle hydraulic control valve.
The blade share can be changed easily and quickly.
RADIUS 860 Selection as a compactly constructed device can be mounted quickly and suits
perfectly even two-sided mounting in small plantations.

2. Description of the RADIUS 860 Selection CLEMENS RADIUS 860 Selection mainly consists of the following assemblies:
- Basic body
- Shaft unit
- Control valve
- Control unit
- Swivelling cylinder
- Sensor rod
- Blade share
RADIUS is mounted via clamp brackets to a common support of the corresponding mounting
bracket, column lifter, front mounting frame etc.
The working principle of the RADIUS is based on a control valve supplied by the hydraulic
of the tractor furnishing oil to the swivelling cylinder. The blade share is turned outwards
while driving up towards the vine. When the sensor rod touches the vine, the control valve is
operated and the oil flow to the swivelling cylinder is cut off. The blade share is pivoting in-
wards via spring force and thus avoids the vine. When the sensor rod is relieved again, the
swivelling cylinder is furnished with oil again ant the blade share pivots into its initial posi-
tion.

3. Function and Mounting possibilities
* Before initial operation:
- Carefully study the operating manual of the RADIUS 860 Selection and the
additional accessories and familiarise yourself with the operation of the equipment.
- Check to see whether the hydraulic connections fit to your tractor.
* Mounting possibilities – Mounting heights – Working depths:
Fig. 4
It is possible to mount the RADIUS either in front or in rear of the tractor. It is also possi-
ble to mid-mount a single RADIUS unit.

1. RADIUS rear-mounted To mount RADIUS in rear is the simplest possibility. On cultivators or disc harrows it is usu-
ally done double-sided. For operating to the two units a flow divider with return oil manifold
is necessary. The mounting height of the RADIUS depends on the tools of the cultivator. The
RADIUS tools should run a little higher cultivator’s. The tools which are mounted in front of
the RADIUS shaft (Fig. 5, part 5) should run 20 mm (1”) deeper than the RADIUS blade
share (Fig. 5, part 6).
2. RADIUS mid-mounted:
The mounting tube (Fig. 2, pos. 1) for column lifters S2 and S-5 is fixed to the square peg of
the tractor, so that a working depth of 20 – 120 mm (1” to 5 “) is achieved.
For determining the mounting height, set the column lifter with RADIUS mounted flatly on
an even surface. Make sure that the vertical hydraulic cylinder is extended at the minimum
120 mm (5”). Determine where the unit can be attached to the tractor and the mounting
height. The mounting height varies from tractor type, model and depends on the size of the
tractor tires. The column lifter has a stroke of 400 (S-1 and S-2) or 500 mm (S-4) (16” or
19.5”). Make sure that the front mounted optional tools in front of the RADIUS shaft (Fig. 5,
part 5) are at least 20 mm (1”) deeper than the RADIUS blade share (Fig. 5, part 6). Please
ensure that the RADIUS has adequate clearance in mid-mounting and front-mounting:
a) from the machine to the front tractor tire when it is turned inwards (Fig. 3, pos. 7) and
from the blade share to the rear tire as well.
b) from the brake pedal if the RADIUS is turned in and lifted.
c) Furthermore, there should be enough clearance between the gauge wheels and the
RADIUS, especially in connection with the use of disc plow and disc colter.
d) The best locating for the plant to touch the sensor rod is 5 cm (2“) from the end of the rod
(Fig. 3, pos. 8).
Radius 860 03.2006 en (ba) - 8 -
* RADIUS front-mounted, double sided:
1. The frame width for RADIUS front mounted depends on the row width and blade
share length. That means:
a) Share length 370 mm (14.5”):
Frame width A= Row width B – 650 mm (25.5”)
b) Share length 500 mm (20”):
Frame width A= Row width B – 910 mm (36”)
c) Share length 620 mm (24”):
Frame width A= Row width B – 1150 mm (45”)
2. Mounting height: See no. 2 on page 6 (RADIUS mid-mounted)
3. The column lifter S-2 front (fig. 5, pos. 47) has a single-acting cylinder with a stroke
of 500 mm (20”). It is also available with double-acting cylinder.
4. The mounting tube (fig. 5, pos. 48) is equipped with a floating equaliser.
5 If you drive mostly on hillsides mount the frame a little deeper than normal, in order to
ensure that the RADIUS tools will have contact with the soil when you enter the row
which is headed down a steep slope. Experience showed that a working depth of 110
mm (4.5”) is best. That means that while mounting the RADIUS the hydraulic cylinder
should be extended 130 mm (5”). (Device completely mounted and placed on level
ground).

4. Working with the RADIUS 860 Selection:
* General indications:
1. Blade share moves continuously from 0-90°.
2. Blade shares and sensor rods are available in three different lengths:
a) 370 mm (14.5”)
b) 500 mm (20”)
c) 620 mm (24”)
3. RADIUS needs single-acting hydraulics.
4. a) Hydraulic oil requirement single-sided: 6 – 10 l/min (1.5 – 2.6 gpm)
b) Hydraulic oil requirement double-sided: 12 – 20 l/min (3.0 – 5.2 gpm)
(flow divider necessary).
5. Forward travel speed should be 4-10 km/h (2.5 – 6.2 mph), depending on soil conditions
and plants.
6. RADIUS is available with hydraulic or electromagnetic override valve. Those enable to
adjust the pressure of the blade share from 0-175 bar (0 – 2800 psi), depending on the
soil conditions. Operating the override valve, the system is relieved from pressure and
the blade share pivots inside.
7. The return flow into the tank always has to be without pressure (the optimum is a
tube diameter of 15 mm (6/10”). Make sure that the oil is delivered into the tank under-
neath the oil level (see fig. above). The return hose for a single unit should have an inside
diameter of at least 13 mm (1/2”). For a double-sided unit the return hose from the flow
divider should have 16 mm (5/8”).
8. The oil of the circuit must be filtered. The best place for the filter is in the suck line, in
order to avoid a backpressure in the return hose (see fig. above).
9. Caution:
When the hydraulic valve of the tractor delivers oil to the RADIUS unit, the blade
share will move forward. This is especially important with the RADIUS in lifted
position above the ground, as this possibly causes injury. Keep the RADIUS in-
operative until you have reached the spot where you want to start working. Keep
safety distance!

Radius 860 03.2006 en (ba) - 10 -
* Initial operation:
a) To free the lines connected to RADIUS from air, the oil flow must be initiated. All
valve levers should be in working position for some time. The sensor rod and with it
the machine can be moved by hand. Now the system deareates automatically.
b) When the hydraulic system is deareated and filled with oil, check the oil level of the
tractor and if necessary fill in correct hydraulic oil according to tractor manufacturer’s
recommended level.
* Adjustments ex factory:
The following adjustments are performed in the factory. If this adjustment should change in
the course of time proceed as follows to readjust the equipment.
1. Adjustment without hydraulic pressure to the unit:
a) Stop point of sensor rod moving in (Fig. 14):
This adjustment will prevent the valve piston to be pressed too deeply and to damage the
end of the valve housing. See fig 14 and 15 and proceed as follows:
Loosen the counternut (pos. 5) and turn the screw (pos.1) with its head towards the sup-
port (pos.9); thus the stopper is not allowed to touch the screw head when pushing the
sensor housing in. While holding the sensor housing in this position, screw the bolt
(pos.1) towards the stopper (pos. 4) until there is a contact. Continue to screw a half turn
after initial contact is made. This prevents the valve piston from pressing at the end of the
valve housing. Relock the bolt (pos. 1) with the counternut (pos. 5) and place the self-
locking nut (pos. 6) at the end bolt (pos. 1). (It is used as a lock for the tension spring
which is used in case of strong weeds (fig.16.).
b) Stop point of sensor rod moving out (Fig.15):
This adjustment will place the sensor unit the way that pos. 2 in non working position
slightly touches the valve piston (pos. 3). Loosen the counternut (pos. 7) and screw the
bolt (pos. 8) in so that you achieve free-play between the stopper (pos. 2) and the piston
(pos. 3). Check if the valve (pos. 3) is easy running and fully extended. Now screw the
bolt (pos. 8) backwards, so that the free-play is just cancelled.
Fig. 14 Fig. 15
Radius 860 03.2006 en (ba) - 11 -
Fig. 16 Fig. 17
Fig. 18
2. Adjustment with hydraulic pressure to the unit (stroke limitation):
The blade share must be in working position. Now check for free-play of the blade share
by pressing its rear edge forward. The distance should be 5 mm (1/5”). This free-play is
necessary to avoid contact between the piston of the cylinder and the cylinder bushing. If
there is no free-play, adjust it with the threaded pin in the stopper of the bearing housing.
* Adjustments – Tool changing – Optional tools:
2. Working in strong weeds
If the sensor rod is already pushed backwards by the weeds, the sensitivity of the sensor
unit can be reduced by placing a tension spring (Fig. 16, pos. 27). Place the tension spring
in the hook and on the adjustment screw.
3. Changing of tools – Changing of the blade share:
When the blade shares are worn out they should be replaced in time. Loosen the screw
(fig. 17, pos. 33) from the RADIUS shaft and clean the matching surface (coupling disk,
pos. 31). Place the new share on the coupling disk and tighten the screw very securely
(torque 190 Nm).
1. Adjustment of the sensor rod
The sensor rod can be adjusted simply
and quickly: Lift the spring loaded knob
on the top of the sensor housing and move
the sensor forwards or backwards. On
driving uphill it is recommendable to
adjust the sensor a few ahead of the blade
share. It should also be done when the
plants are angled forwards or when the
working speed is higher than 8 km/h
(5mph). The height of the sensor rod is
adjustable via the bolt and counternut at
the clamp.
Radius 860 03.2006 en (ba) - 12 -
4. Front ground engaging tools for RADIUS 860 Selection:
In general, RADIUS 860 Selection should only work with attached front tools (see
chapter Mounting). These tools should work 20 mm (1”) deeper than the RADIUS blade
share in order to protect the shaft from stones etc. (Fig. 3).
CLEMENS offers various front tools according to the different soil conditions. The grub-
ber share is used for a deep and thorough cultivation. The same applies to the half duck
foot share. In green–covered plantings the pivoting disc colter or the disc plow (fig. 18) is
used. The pivoting disc colter cuts a neat edge to the green-cover, whereas the disc plow
can be adjusted for slight hilling up and ploughing back (fig. 18). For stronger hilling up
and ploughing back work CLEMENS offers the clearing body LW1.
5. Drawing cut:
The RADIUS 860 Selection can be adjusted for a so called „drawing cut“ of the blade
share. This allows in connection with the soil lifter for 370 mm (14“) blade shares (fig.
17, pos. 36) resp. with the pivoting clod breakers for 500 mm (20“) and for 620 mm (24”)
blade shares an optimal distribution of the loosened soil. If you want to bring the blade
share into this position, please loosen the cylindrical screw (fig. 19, pos. 40) and screw it
into the appropriate threaded boring (fig. 19, pos. 41).

Radius 860 03.2006 en (ba) - 13 -
5. Maintenance and servicing:
The CLEMENS RADIUS 860 Selection is designed so that it requires a minimum of mainte-
nance and care.
However, the following points should be observed:
- After the first 4 hours of operation all screws and nuts are to be checked for a tight
fit.
- When cleaning the RADIUS with a high-pressure cleaner, please make sure that
the high-pressure jet is not aimed at bearing and sealing points or hydraulic
connections. This can result in damage and premature failure.
- All lubricating nipples and movable bearing points have to be lubricated with
sulphur-free grease or oil depending on the working conditions. If the sensor rod
unit is no longer easy-going after lubricating, there has been put in to much
grease. This can be corrected by light hits on the sensor rod unit.
* Possible causes for an abnormal oil heating:
Abnormal oil heating may be caused by the following circumstances:
a) The nominal diameters of the suction, pressure and return lines of the hoses are
too small.
b) The oil tank (reservoir) is insufficiently dimensioned.
c) The oil level in the hydraulic system of the tractor is too low.
d) The oil filter is dirty.
e) The necessary oil quantity is not reached.
f) The setting of the pressure-relief valve of the tractor is insufficient (175 bar as
a minimum).

6. Notes on safety:
- When the machine is not working the raised RADIUS-units have to be put down
on the ground. Only climb or leave the tractor when the hydraulic system is not
running.
- As soon as oil supply is in operation, the RADIUS blade share moves forth. For
this reason keep distance to the machine when it is raised. Keep RADIUS inopera-
tive until you have reached the spot when you want to start working.
- Before use the hydraulic lines are to be checked for damage and ageing and
replaced if necessary.
- Caution: Oil spraying out can cause injuries and pollution to the environ-
ment!
- Maintenance and repair work may only be performed when the hydraulic lines
have been uncoupled from the tractor.
- Never let the RADIUS be operated by people who are not familiar with the safety
and operating instructions.
- The accident prevention regulations of the employer’s liability insurance associa-
tion must be observed.
- Use RADIUS with sufficient natural lighting only.

The mounting variants
described
a) Tractor with power
steering (fig. 6)
b) Tractor without power
steering (fig. 7)
are only two of many
installation variants.
Fig. 6 shows that the oil is led
to the pressure relief valve
(pos. 18) and the flow divider
(pos. 19) after having passed
the flow divider of the tractor
(pos. 17). The additional flow
divider leads the remaining
oil quantity back to the 3-
point hydraulic system. (pos.
20)
The constant quantity flows
back to the tank without
pressure when the valves are
not in operation.
A single-acting control valve
(pos. 21), equipped with a
fixing device for operating
position, is sufficient for
single- and double-sided
operation of RADIUS.
Moreover, an additional
single-acting valve is
necessary for the column
lifter (mid-mounted or front-
mounted). For the width
adjustment of the front-
mounted frame or of the rear-
mounted cultivator a double-
acting valve is necessary.
8. Hydraulic installations:
* General indications
Fig. 7 shows the variant in which there is a pressure relief valve attached behind the oil pump
(pos. 23). In this case, a flow divider (in pos. 24) is required, leading the preferred oil quantity
to the RADIUS and the remaining quantity to the 3-point hydraulic system (pos. 25) or to the
lifting valve (pos. 26).
Fig. 6
Fig. 7
Radius 860 03.2006 en (ba) - 20 -
* Hydraulic installation – Function of the override valve
1. Fig. 9: The hydraulic hoses are connected according to Fig. 9-11. “D“ means pressure
inlet, “T“ means tank and “Z“ connection to the cylinder. Here we show a right-hand
machine without override valve.
2. Fig. 10: Function of the override valve: If you wish the RADIUS blade share to pivot
inside, you have to push the lever (pos. 36) in direction of the arrow. This relieves the
hydraulic system of its pressure and the device pivots inside. Here we show a right-hand
RADIUS with override valve (pos. 33). The override valve is adjustable (pressure reduc-
ing) from 0-175 bar by turning the knurling wheel (pos. 34) anticlockwise (pos. 35). The
pressure should be high enough, so that the resistance of the soil is clearly overcome
(when going forward).
3. Fig. 11 (page 20) shows the connection scheme in case of a double-sided equipment with-
out override valve, but with flow divider and return oil-manifold.
4. For other connection variants please ask your local dealer or our customer service.

The indicated hose diameters (NW) should be respected. The manufacturer is not
responsible for improper connections and such that are not correctly made. Further-
more he is not responsible for break downs on the tractor due to leakage and oil over-
heating. The oil quantities indicated on page 9 (point 4a/b) must strictly be adhered to.
The return flow hose bears only a pressure of 2 bar (28 psi). The operator must make
sure that the tractor’s hydraulic system is sufficient respectively that there is a recooling
of the hydraulic oil.
