375 hours per week We are looking a highly motivated hard working enthusiastic student radiographer to work in our busy radiology department over the summer months This is not a formal student placement but would be suitable for radiography students who may wish to gain additional experience in all aspects of working in a general radiology department NHS Western Isles Radiology is supported by an innovative Radiology Obligate Network with NHS Borders This provides out of hours cover for the Western Isles substantive or locum consultant together with second opinion and peer support for our clinical staff You will have the opportunity to work in a lsquostate of the artrsquo department with a friendly team of radiographers and sonographers dedicated to providing a high quality radiographic service to the Western Isles population Together with undertaking general clerical and chaperoning duties you will have the opportunity to observe qualified radiographers working with DR CR and Digital Fluoroscopy Multislice CT National PACS and Carestream RIS The Western Isles Hospital is situated in Stornoway on the beautiful Island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides The island is served by excellent communications links with the Scottish mainland and is ideally situated for a wide range of cultural and outdoor leisure activities Applications from students in any year of studying will be considered

2 JOB PURPOSE

1 To assist radiographers and sonographers during x-ray and ultrasound examinations and provide

5 ROLE OF DEPARTMENT

1 To provide a high quality efficient and effective Radiology services to the population of the

Western Isles 2 Diagnostic imaging equipment is used to carry out radiological examinations on patients and

reports are provided to referring clinicians The report assists the referrer in providing a diagnosis of the patientrsquos condition in order to decide on an effective course of treatment and care

3 The departmental clinical governance strategy ensures a high standard of care for patients undergoing radiological examination and promotes multidisciplinary team working

4 Provide an environment suitable for the training and education of student radiographers and work experience students on clinical placements

5 To work in accordance with the IR(ME)R regulations at all times

6 KEY RESULT AREAS

Clinical

1 Work as part of a team to ensure effective communication and delivery of care 2 Assist radiographers in moving and handling of patients to ensure a safe environment 3 Assisting patients with undressing and dressing Helping patients to the toilet 4 Inform the radiographers of patientrsquos arrival having checked the patientrsquos details first 5 Give preparation to the patients prior to their CT or ultrasound scan under the direction of the CT radiographers and

sonographers 6 Help to transfer patients from chairstrolleys to scanner bed 7 Act as a patient chaperone if required for the benefit and safety of patients and clinicians 8 Assist portering or nursing staff as required 9 Provide reassurance to patients by way of clear explanation as to the nature of an examination 10 Support the radiographic assistants to monitor stock levels for consumables and change laundry when required

Ensure clean gowns are available for patients at all times 11 Support the radiographic assistants to ensure the clinical rooms are kept clean and tidy and stocked with supplies 12 Support the radiographic assistants to maintain a clean and safe working environment for both patients and staff in

accordance with infection control policies 13 Liaise with fellow healthcare workers and referring clinicians to provide a high quality imaging service to patients 14 Observe Divisional policies in respect of patient care Health and Safety and Radiation Protection 15 Duties will depend on work load patient and radiographer requirements

Reception Duties

1 Administrative and clerical duties include answering the telephone filing and mail handling scheduling appointments and booking patients on attendance photocopying document shredding and assisting the other administrative staff when required

2 Organise attendance of inpatients under the direction of the Radiographers Work as part of a team to ensure effective communication and delivery of care

3 Competent in the use of RIS V11 (Radiology Information System) Competent to input new radiology requests on the system search patient history update patient demographics book current and future patient appointments scanning and emailing of request cards to offsite radiologists emailing reports to referrers and printing of patient reports Anticipate problems eg clashing appointments and take appropriate remedial action

4 Competent to deal with general PACS queries eg password expired incorrect and to know when to escalate queries to PACS administrators

5 Competent in the use of SCi store to look up radiology reports and blood results for patients awaiting CT scans 6 Ensure referrers are notified when results are available which includes daily maintenance of the completed

examination box and distributing clinical reports where necessary 7 Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to Data Protection policies at all times 8 Assist in gathering information for audit

1 Participate in mandatory training and seek personal development under the guidance of the radiology manager 2 In house training will be provided to enhance skills in health care and IT
