Race Walking Record – July 2015

International

The 15 strong GB team for the European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden between 15

th & 19

th July was one of the most

successful ever winning 11 gold, more than double any other nation and 6 silver medals, easily topping the points table writes Ron Wallwork.

For the first time in many years two walkers, Emma Achurch and Callum Wilkinson, were included in the squad and a couple of others narrowly missed qualifying for selection.

The women’s race was the first on the programme; 9:30am on 15th

July. With her preparation hampered by exams Emma Achurch was unable to produce her early season form, but nevertheless posted a track personal of 50:51.58 for 22

nd place. Russian’s Klavdiya

Afanasyeva 43:36.88, Olga Shargina 44:01.08 and Mariya Losinova 44:19.05 made a lean sweep of the women’s medals.

The men’s event was at 10:30am on 18th

July and Callum Wilkinson is to be congratulated on his outstanding performance.

This championship was his main target for the year and his seventh place in 41:34.36, which shaved 18 seconds off Darrell Stone’s national under 20 record set when finishing fourth in the 1987 edition of the championships, was just reward for his dedication and application over the past 12 months.

Three seconds covered 5th

, 6th

and 7th

places, but although losing out in the final lap battle, he was more than pleased with his performance. Five of the six walkers in front of him were in their final year in this age group.

The winner Diego Garcia (Spain) was always in control of the race passing 5km in 20:10, to Wilkinson’s 20:40 and although the Suffolk and Enfield walker slowed slightly around the 6km mark, he rallied to a final 5km of 20:53.

Russia’s Vladislav Saraykin 40:59.28 and another Spanish athlete Pablo Oliva 41:00.73 took the silver and bronze medals.

The field was made up of 28 walkers from 16 countries – 11 received a red card (including Callum), six got two cards and three of them three. With the leading 15 athletes bettering 43 minutes competition was keen to which four national records and 16 personal best’s bears testimony.

Both events because of the early starts were held in cool conditions

With their work done Emma and Callum enjoy spectating

Race Walking Record – July 2015

SIAB Schools International, Grangemouth (Sat. 18th Jul.)

The English Schools season highlight is the Schools International Athletics’ Board (SIAB) home nations international competition where the top performing under 17 school athletes from England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland compete, reports Verity Snook. This competition has a great atmosphere and is often the first time these athletes experience “international competition rules”. The 3000m walk combined both boys and girls where three out of the four nations were represented.

Predictably England’s Chris Snook took the lead from the gun, closely chased by Gearoid McMahon (Ireland) and Tom Partington (England). The top four boys settled quickly into a good pace, battling against very blustery conditions. Even the judges were experiencing challenges with the wind, gusts that moved our footing and insured we held tightly onto the paperwork! Although Chris was never challenged, Tom increased his pace after a sensible start, moving into second place, leaving Gearoid who look technically very strong to settle into third. Fourth place Ireland’s Andrew Carroll comfortably held off first place girl England’s Sophie Ward. The girls struggled a little bit more with the weather conditions, Sophie found herself being blown sideways but managed to hold pace and finish first in a season best time, the chasing pack led by the Irish pair of ladies Niamh O’Connor and Rachel Glennon in 2

nd and 3

rd respectively were chased by fast

finishing Wales lady Megan Stratton-Thomas (4th

). England’s Emily Ghose (5

th) held off Jordan Price (5

th) and strong finisher Amy

Phipps (5th

). Sadly Dan McKerlich didn’t finish the race. All athletes either gained substantial personal bests or season’s bests which is amazing considering the weather conditions.

IAAF Race Walking Commission Elections

Peter Marlow is seeking to be re-elected to the IAAF Race Walking Committee a position he has held since 1976. Peter is one of 22 candidates for only eight seats on the committee and is seeking your assistance in securing enough votes to ensure that his experience and knowledge is not lost. Some of the candidates standing for election have no knowledge of race walking and therefore it is fair to assume that they have no real interest in the event either.

Peter is not standing for political reasons or personal gain, neither is he standing because it would look good on his CV. Peter is standing because he wants to continue to serve race walking as he has done for the last 40 years.

Fresh thinking yet with traditional values - that is what Peter offers.

If you have any influence with your member federation please ask them to vote for Peter at the IAAF elections in Beijing on August 18

th.

Race Walking Record – July 2015

National

Sainsbury’s British Championships, Alexander Stadium, Birmingham (Sun. 5

th Jul.)

First up was the women's race, reports Mark Wall, which quickly saw an early lead pack of five whittled away to two lead competitors Jo Atkinson and Bethan Davies. Lap after lap only a metre or so separated them, however in the end the more experienced Jo was able to prevail in a time of 22:03.55 whilst Bethan was rewarded with a Welsh Record of 22:06.46 to go with her 20km of 14 days earlier. After Tatyana Gabellone was disqualified with 550 metres to go, whilst in an isolated third position, Heather Lewis took the bronze in 23:28.43, she was the defending champion. There were 10 finishers out of 11 starters in 19

oC and 52% humidity on a sunny afternoon.

Immediately following the women it was the turn of the men. This was a tour de force by Tom Bosworth who recorded a tremendous time, just missing the 19 minute barrier with a quick 19:00.73 but still setting a new national record. This was 16.09 seconds better than his previous record, recorded in the same race last year behind Dane Bird Smith. His demolition of the field was complete but behind him all bar one competitor recorded a personal or seasonal best. Junior standout Callum Wilkinson showed he is well prepared for the European Junior championships with a time of 20:21.57. In a shootout for third, Olympian Dominic King prevailed in 21:01.70 ahead of junior Cameron Corbishley in 21:03.92. 13 started 11 finished (two DQs') in identical conditions to the women.

RWA Inter-Area Match, Tamworth (Sat. 11th Jul.) (Photographs courtesy of Mark Easton (http://markeaston.zenfolio.com))

Tom Bosworth fresh from his British Record over 5,000 metres at Birmingham the previous weekend, led the South of England to a victory over the North and Midlands at the Tamworth Athletics Stadium reports Ian Richards. Bosworth used the 10,000 metres as a tempo training session as he cruised to victory in 42:02.0. Bosworth who has secured automatic selection for Beijing, was making a rare appearance over 10,000 metres on the track and despite cruising around his time represented a personal best. Immediately after crossing the line, Bosworth moved onto complete his days training session with a 5 by 1 Kilometre reps session. Bosworth said “Last week’s British Record of 19:00.75 was hard work, but I really enjoyed today and it is great to be part of the South of England Team and to hopefully inspire some of the youngsters competing today”. Behind Bosworth Cameron Corbishley made it a Southern double by taking the Junior 10,000 metres with a mature performance in 43:58.1, only 28 seconds slower than he walked in the Under 20 Championships in Bedford last month. Tim Snook clocked a track personal best of 50:50.2 to secure maximum points for the South. Second place in the men’s

race went to Francisco Reis of the south who had won the RWA 10km on the road the previous weekend at Hillingdon ahead of the Midlands Mark Williams.

The South’s domination continued in the Under 17 Men’s 5000 metres, in which Chris Snook dominated the race from gun to tape, in clocking 24.50.1. In the Senior Women’s 5000 metres, Gemma Bridge, who was making a welcome return to top level race walking competition, produced a very encouraging performance of 25:08.0 in taking victory, which would have been good enough to have placed her in 5

th in last weekend’s British Championship. Second

behind Bridge was the North’s Brenda Gannon who matched her performance from the British Championships the previous weekend in clocking 25:46.4. Kate Donaldson was 3

rd for the Midlands in a

new personal best of 27:30.1. In the Under 20 Women’s 5000 metres, was won by the South’s Heather Butcher in 27:03.4, whilst compatriot Sophie Lewis Ward took the Under 17 Women’s 5000 metres in 25:38.0 ahead of the North’s National under 15 Champion Ana Garcia (26:27.4).

The early stages of the under 15 3000m

The Under 15 Girls 3,000 metres was an excellent battle with the South’s Evie Butcher, the Midland’s Karla Lane and North’s Pagen Spooner setting the pace over the first couple of laps. Butcher and Lane moved away after the 800 metres point and Butcher pulled away from Lane over the last half of the race, to come home in a season best of 15:48.1 to move to top of the UK under 15 rankings. Lane slowed over the last few laps as Spooner closed the gap, as both clocked personal bests of 16:13.8 and 16:21.0 respectively. The under 15 Boys 3000 metres was won by the North’s Steven Waddington in 18:04.7.

The Under 13 Girls 2000 metres was won by National Champion Suki Ly for the South in 11:01.1 ahead of the North’s Molly Meleady-Hanley in 12:17.4. The Under 13 Boys provided the host Area’s only victory of the day as Faris Alkhamesi took the race in 11:07.9 ahead of Northern duo Kai Cundey and Archie Walter. This resulted in the South taking the Inter-Area Trophy with 71 points, ahead of the North (46) and Midlands (35).

Charlie Weston Sadly Ireland-based former Centurions' Captain Charlie Weston has

died aged 81. Charlie passed away peacefully in his sleep on 18th July.

The genial Highgate Harrier, with a great sense of humour, became a top UK 100 Miles competitor when winning over that distance on Colchester Garrison Track at a very cold September 1985 event when clocking 19:21:40, being 66 minutes' ahead of the 2

nd finisher.

Charlie completed 4 sub-24 hours UK 100 miles races having qualified as Centurion 584 in the 1976 Leicester-to-Skegness when clocking 18:29:14.

He twice won the testing Isle of Man 85 Mile Parish Walk, breaking the tape in 1989 & 91 recording 18:17:55 & 17:46:58.

The small screen brought him and race walking, to the attention of millions when Bachelors introduced instant packet soup, their ITV advert featured an athlete race walking through torrential rain, then when indoors enjoying a cup of instant soup as a voice-over slogan boomed, "Bachelors Soup So Good to Come Home To". Charlie however, in strictly amateur days, waived an appearance fee, with it being donated to an Athletics organisation.

In 2006 Charlie was elected as a Centurions Vice President. We all have fond memories of a great athlete and a great character.

Tom Bosworth warmed up for his UK record over 5000m at the British Championships in Birmingham by clocking a British road best over a mile reports Ian Richards.

Bosworth clocked 6:02 as he beat his previous course record of 6:10 set in 2013.

Junior international Cameron Corbishley cut out the early pace on the two-lap course as Bosworth was happy to sit in behind him. Bosworth made his move with 500m to go and pulled away but just missed breaking the six-minute mark and Alex Wright’s British track record of 5:58.4.

Corbishley hung on to clock a British junior best on the road of 6:12. Bosworth’s time would have won six of the thirteen heats of the running miles held after the walks.

Alana Zeidler bravely decided to tackle 5km knowing that 5km will become her regular race distance when she moves into the U17’s in the autumn reports Brian Adams and this was a good chance to get more racing experience over that distance. But having raced 5km in the Inter-Area race on the previous Saturday and then done a 4km session on Monday she just could not match the time she did in Tamworth and slipped off the back of the field.

Molly Meleady-Hanley had a similar thought pattern and tackled her first 3km (her race distance as an U15 from October). Molly produced an excellent debut time of 18:.56 taking her into a one point lead in the series with 3 races to go.

John Errington The death on 14

th June, after a long illness, is reported of Centurion

693 - popular John Errington, 76, of York Postal Walking Club. His club were once big players in distance walking, and in their colours he completed the 1980 Leicester Walking Club/Congerstone 100 Miles in 20:20:58.

John was one of The Centurions' keenest members, rarely missing functions or AGMs. Wherever held, he'd always arrive immaculately dressed with collar and tie + shining badge in a lapel button hole. He enjoyed the atmosphere and camaraderie of Post Office-in-Uniform races, which were then held in various parts of the British Isles. On start lines his smartly pressed uniform, collar, tie & cap stood out!

John attended the House of Commons for our memorable Centurions Centenary Dinner. At The Centurions 2013 AGM at the Union Jack Club saw John rise to tell the gathering he had terminal cancer and firmly predict he wouldn't be around by the time of the next AGM. Fortune proved John's prediction erroneous; as he was still with us (though not fit enough to travel) when the AGMs were held in 2014 (Birmingham) & 2015 (Southwark). A sad loss of a truly popular and active member who'll be much missed by The Centurions, York Postal WC & the Post Office.

University of Sheffield – Big Walk

Message from Les Morton - "I am walking the Pennine way as part of the University of Sheffield's "Big Walk" to raise funds for Lung disease research at the University of Sheffield. We are raising money specifically for a rare blood vessel disorder of the lung called Pulmonary hypertension (PH). Pulmonary hypertension is a life–threatening condition affecting the lungs and the right side of the heart caused when pressure in the pulmonary artery rises above normal levels.

Sheffield is a major international centre for the diagnosis, treatment and research of this condition. We are already making exciting discoveries that we hope will lead to better treatments and ultimately defeat this condition. The money we raise from this event will accelerate our research and help us to develop and test new treatments and make them available for patients as quickly as possible.

The walk begins 2nd September which gives us lots of time to train and more time for people to donate to such a worthy cause. Please donate at my page: https://www.justgiving.com/Les-Morton1/

Many thanks, Les"
