FROM THE DIRECTOR“Life holds its miracles, good erupting from darkness chief among them.” – John Patrick Shanley

Come with us to a small farming community down the highway from Dublin, Ireland, where the rain is as ever-present as are the sounds of the cattle and sheep in the pasture.

Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley is a contemporary romantic comedy about the heartfelt attractions of neighbors Rosemary and Anthony who live on neighboring farms and are now nearing the middle years of life. Their parents have superstitions, eccentricities, stubbornness, a pure Irish Catholic faith, and failing health. Anthony and Rosemary face the painful truth of their advancing years with fear, with a fighting spirit, and with humorous passion. In rehearsals these gifted actors and I have found that the playwright has given us a story about real people woven with magical elements. The way to love here is a thorny walk paved with Irish humor and spirited banter.

John Patrick Shanley is a celebrated playwright (author of the prize-winning Doubt, a Parable), and screenplay writer (Moonstruck, Doubt, and many others.)

Love. Takes. Time. Enjoy the Play!

OUR REMAINING SEASON 39 SHOWS

Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery by Ken Ludwig (March 23 – April 22, 2018)

Get your deerstalker cap on – the play’s afoot! Comedic genius and Tony Award winner Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo) turns Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic The Hound of the Baskervilles into a murderously funny adventure. Sherlock Holmes is on the case. The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being dispatched one by one. To find their ingenious killer, Holmes and Watson must brave the desolate moors before a family curse dooms its newest heir.

Watch as our intrepid investigators try to escape a dizzying web of clues, silly accents, disguises, and deceit as five actors deftly portray more than 40 characters. Does a wild hellhound prowl the moors of Devonshire? Join the fun and see how far from ‘elementary’ the truth can be.

For Better by Eric Coble (May 25 – June 24, 2018)

In this plugged-in world of email, text messaging, and camera phones, do a bride and groom really need to be in the same country to go on a honeymoon? Karen and Max are getting married – at least if their jobs will ever let them be in the same city at the same time.

A romantic comedy for the digital age, where the intricacies of overlapping calls, three-party conferencing, and concurrent instant messages and emails substitute for good old-fashioned human interaction.

“Eric Coble’s hilariously funny, psychologically astute portraits hit home with rib-tickling acuity.” – NY Times. “Coble’s work is a tour de force with physical and verbal comedy to spare.” – The New Yorker.

Out on a Limb: New Plays from America’s Finest City July, 2018 (Dates TBD)

Our 39th season concludes with the seventh edition of our dynamic new-play festival, featuring brand-new one-act plays by Southern California playwrights. Starting with a request for submissions of outlines in November of 2017, SRT fosters a development process resulting in original, diverse plays fully produced over two weekends in July of 2018. Attend one performance and you’ll see world-premiere plays on SRT’s stage!

Pick up a Season 39 brochure in the lobby.

HOW YOUR DONATIONS HELP SRTWe at SRT are so very grateful to those generous donors who make our special OutReach programs possible. Here is a sample of the kind of support that your gifts can provide:

$150 makes it possible for one child to experience SRT’s one-week summer camp, held in conjunction with the YMCA.

$250 provide scholarships for two children to participate in SRT’s six-session Children’s Theatre program, held in conjunction with the YMCA.

$500 supports a playwright through New Works Studio and allows the play to be brought to the public

$1,000 allows SRT to take a one-act play to a local middle or high school at no cost to the school or students.

Thank you to those of you who support us with your donations. And if you are not yet a donor, please consider making a contribution. On behalf of the children, parents, playwrights and patrons impacted by SRT’s New Works Studio and OutReach programs, thank you for your support.

SRT’S OUTREACH PROGRAMThe SRT OutReach program is engaging, exciting and necessary. Each year we endeavor to extend our goodwill to local schools by presenting a short original play accompanied by a talk-back session and Q & A with the actors and director. This is an invaluable connection to the future of our community. And, most importantly, we give all of this to the schools for free! Donations help to fund this important work, as well as our summer camp and children’s theatre programs, and continue our investment in the future.

SRT’S NEW WORKS STUDIOScripps Ranch Theatre is providing an excellent opportunity for Southern California playwrights to develop new plays. New Works Studio is a nine-month-long, full-length play-development program, where a few playwrights meet in a peer group with a dramaturg to workshop, give feedback, and create in a non-judgmental, safe space. At the end of the nine months, each playwright receives a free public reading of their play at SRT. Your donations to New Works Studio will help to compensate the playwrights, dramaturg, director, and actors, and enable SRT to continue to be a leader in San Diego of new works for the stage.
