Description:The Rabbit Branch Tributary project was substantially completed on April 24, 2014. The project consisted of restoring approximately 1,515 linear feet of highly degraded tributary of Rabbit Branch using natural channel design techniques.
Project Overview:• Establishment of new and stable channel geometry.
• Reconnection of the channel with its floodplain by raising the stream bed.
• Placement of a reinforced bed to prevent future incision.
• Stabilization of the stream bed and banks, reduction of erosion, and improvement of habitats through the installation of various in-stream structures to include: Root Wads, Soil Lifts, Log Sills, Log J-Hook, Rock Step Pools, and Modified Cross-Vanes.
• Restoration of the site with native trees, herbaceous plants, and grasses to promote natural reforestation.
• Reduction of 1,096 lbs. of total nitrogen per year, 85 lbs. of total phosphorus per year, and 81 tons of sediment per year leading to the Pohick Creek.
