fiNNf9l1N~E 11TH HERITfiGE flWfiRBHearty congratulations go to SigdaI member Rolf H. Erickson, circulationlibrarian, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, who has been selectedfor the America-Norway Heritage Fund award for 1989 as its fourthrecipient!

Previous grants were made in 1986 to Dr. Lloyd Hustvedt, in 1988 toProfessor Reidar Dittman, both of St. Olaf College; and in 1987 to Dr.Kenneth Smemo, Moorhead State University, Moorhead, MN.

Erickson will be a guest of Amer-ican-NorwayHeritage Fund for a week longvisit in the Norwegian cities-- Oslo, Hamar, Gj~vik, and Lillehammer--during August where he will participate in activities relating to theexhibition, "Norsk I Amerika" (Norwegians in America). It begins May 13and continues to August 27, 1989 in five locations in conjunction withcelebrations of the 175th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitutionsigned at Eidsvoll, May 17, 1814.

"Norsk I Amerikau features objects of Norwegian origin that settlersbrought to America --mostly from the Vesterheim Museum collection, incooperation with Nordmanns-Forbundet. Other elements will concentrate onfine arts, decorative arts and photography of Norwegian-Americans.Anyone planning to be in Norway this summer may write for moreinformation on costs or exhibit hours to: The Norwegian Emigrant Museum,P.O. Box 1104, 2301 Hamar, Norway.

Seeking to award special grants to Americans of Norwegian descent whomake significant contributions to American culture, the America-NorwayHeritage Fund enables recipients to visit Norway to share the result oftheir work--via lectures, exhibitions, and, if appropriate, performanceswith the Norwegian people. It is hoped that the cultural, economic, political, and religious contributions made by Norwegian-Americans inbuilding this country will become known also in Norway.

Erickson serves Vesterheim, the Norwegian-American Museum, Decorah,on both the board of trustees and the executive board. He hasactive in the Norwegian-Ame~ican Historical Association, Northfield, where he serves as vice president of the executive board.

A picture is worth a thousand words'. And so it was when Elvera Bisbeeshowed a friend a picture of a wedding chest, painted in Kr¢dsherad,Norway in 1796! The friend was certain that Norwegian Nils Ellingsgaard,a prominent Hallingdal rosemaler and author, would be interested.

Without seeing the trunk,Ellingsgaard recognized thestyle and colors used byGULBRAND LARSEN FOSS from thepicture. Later on, he wanted toactually see the artwork. Thepiece was rosemaled for thewedding of Christi Trulsdatter(1770-1838) and Ole Erickson in1796.

Presently the fifth owner ofthis family treasure, Elvera is.known to many rosemalers and lagmembers. She toured Norway withother rosemalers in 1985 and herreputation is growing there aswell as in Minnesota (nextpage) .

Possession of the trunk passedto succeeding generations 2)Ingeborg Olsdatter (1810-1858)who married Truls Knudsen; 3)Christi Trulsdatter (1848-1925) who married Asle Olsen0degardseie (Anderson); 4) Ida (Mrs. Oluf) AndersonElvera Bisbee.

and later, Ellef<1882-1952) ; 5)

Even though Ellingsgaard has recently published a second book with manyillustrated chests~ there is ongoing research and new data will beincluded in future projects. Of special interest are emigrant chestsfrom the 1700s-1800s which, following the trip to America, have survivedcontinued use as well as storage in places (such as attics) wheretemperature variations are not necessarily the most ideal for heirloomsand antiques.

It also awakens the zest to research the family history (slektregister)to find chests (kister) from years back. On the ocean voyages toAmerica, trunks held everything valuable one owned--disassembled spinningwheels, clothing, food & utensils for the trip, important papers, moneyand books.

Many of you may own Porsgrund "porselen" (china) pieces with theEllingsgaard signature. Using a representative motif, he produced aseries of cup, saucer and desert plates showing traditional designs fromseveral different specific "bygde" og "fylker" (communities or counties)a number of years ago. He also taught at Vesterheim Museum in the past.
