The Parish Staff extends best wishes for a

blessed and holy Thanksgiving Day.

Page 3: R I P E P I Our Tradition of Louis D. 5762 PEARL ROAD ...“Thanksgiving Meal” for the blessings that are ours. Those Pilgrims who came to the New World--almost 400 years ago--set

St. Charles Borromeo Church November 18, 2018

This Thursday, November 22, is Thanksgiving

Day. That is about as close to a “national holyday”

as there can be. For many years, St Charles Parish

has marked the holiday with our Thanksgiving Day

Mass. We will do so again this year at 9:30am on Thanksgiving

morning.

The word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek language and it

means “Thanksgiving.” Each time we celebrate the Eucharist, we

give thanks for God’s goodness to us: the gift of Life, the gift of His

Son, and the gift of our Faith. Every Eucharist is a sacramental

“Thanksgiving Meal” for the blessings that are ours.

Those Pilgrims who came to the New World--almost 400 years

ago--set aside a Day of Thanksgiving for the blessings of the year

just past. Our nation has enshrined that practice with a national

day of Thanksgiving; since the Second World War, that day has

been on the fourth Thursday of November.

Although in recent years Thanksgiving has become--for some--

a day to start their Christmas shopping, the day also remains--for

many--one of sentiment, family, travel, bountiful tables, and

heartfelt gratitude. That spirit is captured so well in Norman

Rockwell’s “The Thanksgiving Picture—Freedom from Want”

portraying the third of Franklin D Roosevelt’s wartime “Four

Freedoms.”

The older I get, the more I realize that—not just on

Thanksgiving—but that each and every day should be about giving

thanks for the blessings that are ours.

Not only counting our blessings, but also sharing them is a

meaningful Thanksgiving practice. In that spirit, you are invited to

bring your gifts of canned goods to our 9:30am Thanksgiving Day

Mass, this Thursday, November 22. Bring your gifts forward at

Offertory time--as was done in the early years of the Church.

Canned goods are also requested at any time during the months of

November and December. Check the article in this bulletin for the

items we need the most.

Here’s a gentle reminder about my request last week that you

use St Charles Gift Certificate Program at least for the purchase

of your “gas and groceries.” Please stop at the Parish Office on

your way to the grocery store or gas station and purchase the Gift

Certificates you will need. And give our Gift Certificates as gifts.

All proceeds benefit St Charles School—and the teachers of

St Charles School educate all St Charles kids in our Catholic

Faith.

I continue to receive inquiries about a twelve-day Irish Tour

for next summer. We are looking for some time during the last two

weeks of June 2019. If interested, please leave your name, the

number interested in travelling, address, phone, and e-mail at the

Parish Office (440-884-3030). I will arrange an itinerary and

check on the cost. You need not be a parishioner—family and

friends are also most welcome to join us. Please get the above-

requested information to me by Friday, November 30.

This Monday, November 19, at 7:00pm, Parents of this year’s

First Communicants (second graders) will meet with Father Tim

Roth in the Lower Parish Hall. Parents of our Confirmation

candidates (eighth graders) will meet with Father Scott

Goodfellow in the John Paul II Room (second floor) of the Parish

Activities Center. This is the Third Required Sacramental Meeting

for our parents and it will conclude by 8:00pm, as promised.

Merici Chapel… Imagine that you received an

invitation to come and visit and have a personal

conversation with someone you admired and looked

up to — maybe Pope Francis, a dignitary from a

foreign country, an actress or actor, CEO of a

company, or maybe just an average person you wish to be like

— OR your King! As we prepare to celebrate the Feast of

Christ the King on Sunday, November 25, prepare to honor

your personal invitation from your King, any time, any day,

any hour and visit Jesus in Merici Chapel.

THANK YOU FOR OUR

JUST SHOP—

AND HELP SAINT CHARLES SCHOOL!

There are 4 ways to help our school

with no cost to you.

1. Cut and send in the BoxTops for Education. Did you know

that each of those is worth 10 cents? Throw them away and

you are throwing away money!

2. Cut and send in Tyson labels (again, don’t throw those

out—we can use them!)

3. Shop at ACME? Send in your receipt and we will do the

rest. We have gotten about $600 each year for the past few

years just by sending in receipts.

4. Register your Giant Eagle Advantage Card to benefit

Saint Charles: Go to www.GiantEagle.com/AFTS and

create an account. Then choose school programs and enter

our school ID of 2817. Add our school! It takes about 4

minutes to both register and add Saint Charles School.

ST. LADIES GUILD LOTTERY Lottery tickets for February 2019 are

available in the Parish Office for $5.00

each. The winning 3 digit numbers come in

from the 7:30pm drawing on Channel 5 and

must be straight. If your ticket is a winner,

you will get a check for $100! This is one of

our big fundraisers so please help us out. Any questions,

please call Jacki (440)884-3030. Thank you!
