Criteria• Re-use existing readout systems where possible• High density• Build inexpensive adapters to existing systems• Save funds for detector work

Multi-channel candidate is from the ATLAS MDT• High density• Proven usage in ATLAS detector at CERN• Data acquisition to computer files readily available• Existing analysis programs

Mezzanine cards• 24 input channels each• Amplifier/Shaper/Discriminator for signals from detector• TDC (AMT-3) to digitize signal timing and amplitude• LVDS signaling for output data transmission

Chamber Service Module (CSM-4)• Attaches to as many as 18 Mezzanine cards• Serial to Parallel conversion of input LVDS signals.• Suppression of empty data cycles• Time-division multiplexing of 16-bit output data via fiber

Data Acquisition Computers• Windows PC for direct control of hardware• Linux WS for assembly of fiber data into disk files

Statistics accumulated for data integrity assurance

Mezzanine cards are designed to plug into ATLAS “Hedgehog” cards.

The HH cards, in turn, plug into the chamber ends The PPS test detectors come in several varieties

• “Standard” panels with 0.1” pitch card edges• Our own detectors with TBD connections• Two connectors chosen, depending on the situation

Standardized on Tyco, 40-pin connectors, 1658012-1 And on Samtec TFML-120-02-S-D

Ultimately adapted to same Tyco connector

Build PPS Hedgehog card• Adapt Tyco connector to Mezzanine connectors• Provide resistive attenuation network to match signal size

All panels must provide appropriately sized signals to the Mezzanine cards

Pickoff cards (eg, Pikov-4) for work in air• Provide resistive attenuation network• Provide the Tyco connectors

Prototype panels• High density cabling connected via Samtec connector• Intermediate adapter cards from Samtec to Tyco• Designed to work in vacuum if necessary

HEP Experiment quality electronics have been assembled for PPS development work

Minimal expenditures to adapt the hardware for our use.

Highly flexible adapter cards allow examination of a wide variety of situations and resultant signal sizes without adverse impact on the data quality.
