o SECTION 081213.13 – TWO-PIECE INTERLOCKING WELDED HOLLOW METAL FRAMES

  • 1. Product Description

The Qwikinstall Frame is a two-piece, interlocking, welded hollow metal frame engineered to be installed in place of a traditional

one-piece welded frame. It is not a knock-down frame. All frame corners are welded and ground smooth, giving the strength and

durability of the traditional welded hollow metal frame, with the added advantage of being able to install the Qwikinstall Frame

anytime after the drywall has been installed.

The Qwikinstall Frame is fabricated using 16 gauge, galvanealed steel, which is additional corrosion protection for the frame.

The frame fits into the same size opening as the traditional frame, which makes it a versatile solution for renovations where the

traditional frame must be removed and replaced.

Instead of ordering specific frame throat dimensions for the installation, The Qwikinstall Frame will automatically adjust the throat

dimension for drywall thickness variations and excessive mudding of drywall seams (see profile dimensions below).

    2. Drawings The full Qwikinstall product cut sheet can be found in the Appendix under Support Documents – Product Cut Sheet

    Exterior Dimensions

This is a dimensioned drawing of the installed

Qwikinstall frame. These dimensions are identical to

the traditional welded hollow metal frame, providing

the appearance of the traditional frame with the

flexibility of being able to install the frame at any point

in the construction process, after drywall is installed.

This means there are no architectural dimensional

drawings needing to be modified to use the frame.

This construction timing flexibility eliminates delays

caused by late frame delivery, and effectively

eliminates the added cost of repairs caused by trade

    damage to the frame.

    Profile Dimensions

The profile of the frame matches the dimensional

profile of the traditional welded hollow metal frame

    once it has been installed.

1,000,000-Cycle – Door Opening and Closing Test Results

    ANSI A250.4 2011 TEST RESULTS:

The Qwikinstall Frame was cycle tested by Intertek Testing Laboratories and successfully completed 1,000,000 cycles of the ANSI A250.4 2011, TEST PROCEDURE AND ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR PHYSICAL ENDURANCE FOR STEEL DOORS, FRAMES AND FRAME ANCHORS, without any issues or incidents. The “Summary of Test Results” confirms the Qwikinstall Frame is “Compliant to all applicable sections of ANSI A250.4 2011.

Frame Ramming Test – Traditional Frame vs. Qwikinstall Frame

A Product Durability Study was conducted in cooperation with Barton Malow Construction Company. The study was designed to

test and compare the durability of the Qwikinstall Frame to traditional hollow metal frames when the frames are being rammed by a

cart weighing 570 lbs. traveling at a speed of 3 mph. This method was selected to simulate a loaded hospital gurney accidently

hitting the door frame when it is being moved through the door opening with a patient on the gurney.

The purpose of the testing was not to determine how much physical “abuse” the frame could sustain, it was to identify if the

ramming would cause any potential warrantable failure to the 2-piece interlocking construction of the Qwikinstall frame.

The testing was done, side-by-side, on a traditional frame installation and a Qwikinstall installation. The cart was rammed into both

sides of the frame on both sides of the wall of the door opening.

After repeated ramming, both frames sustained damage that represented abuse. However there was no failure of the two-piece

interlocking feature on the Qwikinstall Frame. The test was suspended once no failure was identified and the frames were simply

    sustaining more damage.

The charts below calculate the speed and force of the cart upon impact.

We rammed both the Traditional Welded Hollow Metal Frame and the Qwikinstall Frame from different angles and into different

surfaces until we had a good understanding of the damages caused by the experiment.

It was decided that all testing would be conducted with the full weight load available, 570 lbs. The highest chart weight shown is

510 lbs (see lower right hand chart data). Photos and videos were recorded.

  • 4. Specifications

A complete Division 8 architectural specification for the Qwikinstall Frame is attached to the documents in the Appendix for this Submission. (See SUPPORT DOCUMENTION – Architectural Specification – Section 081213.13)

This document can be provided to you as a separate Word document if it is needed. The document allows architects to easily insert

project specific information into the specification.

  • 5. Photographs

The Qwikinstall architectural specification has been approved by General Motors and added into their GM OneSpec System. The

photos below are from a new GM Plant in Flint Michigan that installed the Qwikinstall Frames after the drywall was installed.

    The photo on the right

    shows office space

    under construction.

    The drywall has been

    installed and painting is

    about to begin.

    The Qwikinstall frame

    laying on the floor, is

    staged for installation.

    The flexibility of the

    construction sequence

    with the Qwikinstall

    frame allows the frame

    to be installed before

    or after painting, or

    even before or after

    flooring is installed.
