The University of the Free State (UFS) is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in South Africa. It opened its
doors in 1904 in Bloemfontein as the Grey University College, with six students
in the Humanities. Since then, the institution has grown to more than 40 000
students, spread over three campuses and across seven faculties (Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Health
Sciences, the Humanities, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Theology and
Religion).
Most of our students are located on the Bloemfontein Campus, with the Qwaqwa
Campus situated in the picturesque Eastern Free State, serving a rapidly-
growing number of rural students from the immediate area and surrounding
provinces. The South Campus – also situated in Bloemfontein – serves as the centre for distance-learning programmes offered by the UFS, as well as alternative access to higher education for promising
students who have not obtained the required marks in their final school
examinations.
The UFS creates opportunities and growth through leading learning and
teaching, focused research, and impactful engagement with society.
Situated in the heart of South Africa, our character of caring and diversity translates into an outstanding university experience.

2011The academic brand - the historic University of the Free State crest that has been the symbol of the university since 1952, has evolved to embrace the aesthetic expectations of the stakeholders. The shape of the traditional academic shield has been simplified and contemporised. Much of the symbolism of the crest remains intact, acknowledging the location of the UFS brand as one of the country’s premier institutions of higher education, with a proud history of academic excellence and an ever evolving, vibrant culture.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE UFS CREST OVER MORE THAN A CENTURY
1904Up to 1935, the same coat of arms was used as the Grey College School.
1935By 1935, with the name change to University College of the Orange Free State, the coat of arms fell into disuse, especially among students.
1947In 1947, an agreement between management and students led to the new motto Per Fidem ad Sapientiam (Through faith to wisdom).
1950In 1952, it was changed to In Deo Sapientiae Lux (In God is the light of wisdom). The traditional orange, white and blue, linking the UFS to the South African national colours, changed in the late 1990s. The orange was replaced by cherry red.

Congratulations to our newest alumni on the Qwaqwa Campus, the Class of 2020! Today is a joyous day where we celebrate the summit of your journey at the University of the Free State (UFS). Welcome to the
alumni of this great 117-year-old institution – your place in this exceptional group is well deserved. The world of work is dynamic and changing at a much faster pace than before. But you have already proven your resilience and tenacity by completing your studies under extraordinary circumstances. I believe that you are fully prepared for what lies ahead.
You will come across our sought-after Kovsie alumni as educators, health professionals, scientists, entrepreneurs, agriculturists, artists, humanitarians, legal professionals, clergy, sportsmen and sportswomen, etc., who contribute to the welfare and growth of so many people in our beautiful country and beyond.
We urge you to remain in contact with your university friends, and to broaden your alumni network as you venture into the world of work. Connect on the online platforms available to you, and also engage with our Alumni Office. Support from like-minded individuals will provide you with the necessary motivation, direction, and encouragement when needed.
You have accomplished much, and I know that you will continue to do so. We commend the sacrifices made by you and your support network to realise your achievement under very unusual circumstances.
We celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of our undergraduate and postgraduate students and bless you with our confidence and hope as you embark on the next stage of your journey.

With his thesis, titled: IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION FOR ENGLISH FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE LEARNERS: A FREE VOLUNTARY READING APPROACH, the candidate has made a contribution to the field of free voluntary reading approach in assisting to improve reading comprehension for English first additional language learners. The study confirmed the existence of challenges in the teaching and learning of reading comprehension for EFAL learners. They included: persistent poor reading comprehension, continuous dependency on traditional pedagogic practices, a weak reading culture, and the use of English language. In order to alleviate these challenges, the study proposed the free voluntary reading approach and for effective use, the approach must focus on both the macro level (outside the classroom) and micro levels (inside the classroom). At the macro level, the focus is on needs identification process, context analysis, creation of vision and a road-map to overcome the challenges. At the micro level, emphasis is on context evaluation, co-lesson preparation, teacher-scaffolding, and peer scaffolding.

MAGAIZA, Grey
Thesis Title: SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS A YOUTH DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY IN RESOURCE POOR COMMUNITIES. A CASE STUDY OF THIBELLA IN QWAQWA, EASTERN FREE STATE
Grey was born in Bulawayo. He did his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sociology and Master of Science in Sociology and Social Anthropology at the University of Zimbabwe where he was also appointed as a lecturer.
With his thesis, titled: SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS A YOUTH DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY IN RESOURCE-POOR COMMUNITIES. A CASE STUDY OF THIBELLA IN QWAQWA, EASTERN FREE STATE, the candidate critically analyses the interdisciplinary scholarship of social entrepreneurship, youth and community development ultimately synthesizing it within the sociological discipline. The candidate examined the extent to which social entrepreneurship intentions can contribute towards youth development in the resource-poor community of QwaQwa. The study made a number of key contributions to the scholarship footprint of SE. Firstly, it maps the pre-paradigmatic status of SE as a field of study and develops the enactive interdisciplinary paradigm that connects the disparate scholarship of SE. Secondly, the study generates middle-range theoretical propositions to strengthen SE approaches. Lastly, by using participatory research, the study assists SE
practitioners with a novel approach of including local theories and aspirations of social change in community development. The study presents the argument that a participatory identification of SE intentions by young people can be a catalyst for community development.

MATSIKA, Tsiidzai
Thesis Title: THE POLITICS OF SUSTAINABILITY: DISCOURSE AND POWER IN POST-2000 ZIMBABWEAN POLITICAL TEXTS
Tsiidzai Matsika was born in Mutare, Zimbabwe in 1984. She received her secondary education in the same town, where she matriculated at Sakubva Secondary School in 2002. She obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Arts Honours in English (2006) and Master of Arts in English (2013) from the University of Zimbabwe. She started her career as a Communication lecturer at Mutare Polytechnic in Mutare, Zimbabwe (2008-2016). In 2016, she was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of English and Media Studies at the University of Zimbabwe where she currently teaches English language and literature.
With her thesis, titled: THE POLITICS OF SUSTAINABILITY: DISCOURSE AND POWER IN POST-2000 ZIMBABWEAN POLITICAL TEXTS, the candidate contributes to scholarship on political communication in contemporary Zimbabwe. Using a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, Matsika examined a range of Zimbabwean political texts, from election manifestoes and political campaign posters to policy blue-prints and election advertisements, with a view to understanding how language is aesthetically deployed in competing epistemologies and representations of sustainable economic development. The study presents the argument that, in a context of economic and political crisis, a language-focused analysis of political texts uncovers tensions inhabiting modes of institutional self-writing. A CDA approach to these policy narratives draws attention to the discursivity of rhetoric in a series of signs designed to shape knowledge about the Zimbabwean crisis. It is in this light that this study approached the crisis as a crisis of discourse.

G R A D U A T I O N P R O G R A M M E 33
FACULTY OF THE HUMANIT IESTHE HUMANITIES
Dr Bright Sinyonde is a BA, BA Honours and MA in English graduate of the University of Venda. He is also currently a contract Lecturer in the Department of English, UFS Qwaqwa Campus. Dr Sinyonde is an emerging young scholar in the field of postcolonial urbanity and literature with a focus on the growing research field of representations of post-apartheid Black identities in South Africa. He is also currently preparing journal publications emanating from his doctoral thesis.
With his thesis, titled: NEGATIVE SPACES AND BLACK HOLES: (RE)IMAGINING RACE (BLACKNESS) IN POST-2000 SOUTH AFRICAN URBAN NARRATIVES, Bright Sinyonde focused on the way selected black South African authors depicted black urban dwellers' experiences in fictional Johannesburg and Cape Town during the immediate post-apartheid era to the early 2000s. He uses the concept of blackness to determine how black residents find place in post-apartheid city spaces. The study also unpacks how the depicted residents connect with their city and other residents born in the city (Alexandra) and different rural parts of the country's provinces such as Tiragalong in Limpopo, parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape province as well as those from beyond the country's borders; and constitute their identities – self, gender, urban and national, amidst residual effects of apartheid and that of the socio-economic and political connections between South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world.

ONAOLAPO, Titilope Funmbi
Thesis Title: SPATIAL-TEMPORAL CHANGE OF HUMAN SETTLEMENTS DEVELOPMENT PATTERN IN AFROMONTANE REGION: A CASE STUDY OF THABO MOFUTSANYANA MUNICIPAL DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY
Titilope Funmbi Onaolapo was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. She attended Methodist Grammar School, Bodija between 1990 and 1992 and finished from Wesley College of Science, Ibadan in 1995. She studied Urban and Regional Planning as her first degree and graduated in 2004; she had M.Sc. in Housing Development and Management from the University of Ibadan in 2014. She worked with a private Estate Management company, Jagun Associate, Broad Street, Lagos, Nigeria between 2005 and 2009. She had a PhD in Environmental Geography from the University of The Free State, Qwaqwa campus in 2020.
With her thesis, titled: SPATIAL-TEMPORAL CHANGE OF HUMAN SETTLEMENTS DEVELOPMENT PATTERN IN AFROMONTANE REGION: A CASE STUDY OF THABO MOFUTSANYANA MUNICIPAL DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY, the candidate investigated the spatial-temporal change in human settlement development pattern of Thabo Mofutsanyane municipality within the Drakensburg mountain of the Afromontane region. She assessed the land use pattern and development changes and determined the Spatio-temporal change between 1989 & 2018 using remote sensing and spatial metrics. She also identified and assessed the factors responsible for the changes and evaluated the current level of development. She modelled a sustainable human settlement development pattern for the study areas. The study showed a steady expansion in the built-up areas in the years under study, especially between 1989 and 1999. It also established that remotely sensed data with GIS and spatial metrics could be used to successfully monitor and plan for a sustainable settlement development in the mountainous region.

in 2010. He graduated his MSc degree in Laser Physics at Addis Ababa University in 2012. He started his career in lecturer position 2013 at Wollega University. He achieved a certificate from sustainable energy material institute, which was held at Arusha, Tanzania, in 2016. In 2018, he was admitted as a researcher in the physics department and tutor at UFS up to date.
With his thesis, titled: SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF RARE-EARTH DOPED SILICATE-BASED NANOMATERIAL FOR APPLICATION IN LIGHT EMITTING DIODES, the candidate contributes to scholarship on synthesis and characterization of un-doped, rare-earth ions (Dy3+, Eu3+, and Tb3+) doped, and co-doped Barium Calcium tetra silicate nano-phosphors (BCS). With this contribution, using the solution combustion technique, Desta obtained numerous samples to investigate the effect of these dopant ions on the structural, optical, and luminescence properties of nano-phosphors. The results of the study, such as crystallite size in the nano range, uniform particles size distribution on the surface, wide bandgap materials that are essentially required for the production of bright white light emitting that can convert the ultraviolet into visible light. Photoluminescence lifetimes in the order of milliseconds, and emission spectra in green, white, and red region indicated that the solution combustion is the improved technique to synthesize nano-materials for LEDs application.

HAILE, Hagos Tsegay
Thesis Title: MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF CERIUM DOPED YTTRIUM SILICATE (Y2SiO5:Ce3+) BY PULSED LASER DEPOSITION METHOD FOR DISPLAY APPLICATIONS
Hagos Tsegay was born on the 12th of September 1985 in Adwa, Tigray, Ethiopia. He matriculated at Nigiste-Saba High School in 2004 and later attained a Bachelor of Education in Physics (BED) from Mekelle University, Ethiopia in 2008. He also obtained his Masters in Nuclear physics from Addis Ababa University in 2011. Hagos has served as a lecturer in Hawassa University until he joined University of the Free State to pursue his PhD education. He also served as head of the Physics Department at the Hawassa University College of Natural and Computational Science for two years.
With his thesis, titled: MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF CERIUM DOPED YTTRIUM SILICATE (Y2SiO5:Ce3+) BY PULSED LASER DEPOSITION METHOD FOR DISPLAY APPLICATIONS, the candidate contributes to the area of luminescence and materials applicable in the field of display technologies. Currently, phosphor technology demands materials which are chemically and thermally stable and durable in the area of LED, field emission displays. The candidate deposited the phosphor materials by Pulsed Laser depositions, which is a modern approach useful in possible applications in display technologies and related areas.

MUSEMBI, Michael Kioko
Thesis Title: SOLUTIONS COMBUSTION SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERISATION OF RARE EARTH DOPED ZINC ZIRCONATE NANOCOMPOSITE
Michael Musembi graduated with a BSc in Physics and Mathematics from the Kenyatta University, Kenya in 1993 and Postgraduate diploma in Education from Egerton University in 1996 and thereafter a Masters in Science (Physics) from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in 2007. Upon graduation, he worked as a teacher in Vyulya Girls’ Secondary, Kavilinguni High and Muthetheni Girls’ Secondary Schools in Kenya. He was posted to Machakos Technical Training Institute upon joining the Technical Division and thereafter Machakos University College. Currently, he is a lecturer in Machakos University, where he once served as the chairman of the Physical Sciences department.
With his thesis, titled: SOLUTION COMBUSTION SYNTHESIS AND PHOTOPHYSICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF RARE-EARTH DOPED ZINC ZIRCONATE NANOCOMPOSITES, the candidate makes a contribution to scholarship in the synthesis of solar energy materials. With this contribution, he attempts to optimize the synthesis conditions for the growth of zinc zircornate perovskite by the solution combustion method. The results show that energy materials grown in composites present more superior properties than their pure individual compounds. The investigation reveals that these properties are further enhanced through doping by rare-earth elements

South Africa, and the Free State in particular, has a long-standing friendship with our neighbouring country, Lesotho.
Through a shared history, we have become co-creators of our futures. For this reason, the UFS decided to incorporate our tradition with that of the Basotho in the design of our Main Procession graduation gowns.
The gowns are inspired by the Seanamarena – the traditional Basotho blanket. The different patterns on the Seanamarena indicate the status one holds in the Basotho nation or reflect the occasion being celebrated. Keeping the Seanamarena pattern in mind, we combined our traditional academic designs with that of the Basotho nation.

Yoke pattern for the Chancellor and Vice-ChancellorThis Seanamarena pattern is an interpretation of a design – used exclusively for the king and chiefs –which means “to swear by the king”. This blanket has the highest status of all Basotho blankets.
Yoke pattern for the Chairperson of the CouncilThis Seanamarena Victorian crest motif appeared after the visit of the Prince of Wales to Lesotho in 1925, which made a profound impression on the local people. Customers refer to this blanket as ‘lesiba’ – meaning feathers – when buying it.
Yoke pattern for the Vice-RectorThis Seanamarena Poone design symbolises good crops, wealth, and fertility. The Poone is given as a present to honour an important visitor.
Yoke pattern for RegistrarThe same Seanamarena Poone design used for the Vice-Rector applies to the Registrar, with some slight design and colour alterations.
The Deans wear gowns made in the colours of the faculties or others which indicate the office they hold.
