Assalam o alaikum!

Thanks for selecting the “Quranic Arabic Program” to learn the Arabic Language. We will take you through a series of

modules starting from scratch and ending at the height of the classical literary Arabic. At the end of this program, God

wills, you will be able to understand the literary Arabic. This program contains an easy approach to develop your

linguistic skills to understand the Islamic literature. The series of books is name as “Quranic Arabic Program” because

the Quran resides at the central position in this series.

People learn Arabic due to two reasons: (1) To understand the Quran, the Hadith and the classic Arabic literature; or

(2) to communicate with Arabs in the modern Arabic. This course is targeted to achieve the former objective, however,

people aiming for the later can also get benefit of this program. Due to its systematic nature, Arabic is one of the easiest

languages in the world, having well-defined rules, a highly sophisticated linguistic structure, and extremely developed

styles of eloquence. If you are familiar with the rules of Arabic Grammar, you can learn this language in a few weeks.

About 40-50 words are commonly used in Arabic, and we have tried to teach these words in the initial modules. In

order to understand the Quran and the Hadith, it is essential to learn the vocabulary used in the Quran, the Hadith and

the Islamic literature. We will focus the linguistics, philology and figurative speech of the Quran in this program.

Study Methodology

Learning Arabic by using this program is very simple: Read one lesson daily; solve all the exercises provided under

'Test Yourself‘; do not read the answers before attempting the questions and once you solve the exercises, compare

your answers with the ones provided to you in the “Answers Book” of the respective module. In a few weeks, you will

find that your comprehension skills are improving. You do not need to memorize words or grammar rules. The course

is designed in a way that they will automatically become part of your memory.

Advanced LevelIntermediate LevelBasic Level

The program is organized in a way that you will gradually learn the Arabic language. It contains three levels: Basic;

intermediate and advanced. Each level contains several modules which are organized into two series. One series

consists of Arabic grammar and other language rules while the other is designed to build your vocabulary by reading

the Arabic text. We have used the code of “AG” for the former and “AT” for the later. For instance module numbers

are like AG00, AG01, AG02, AT01, AT02 etc. The entire structure of the program is depicted in the diagram and you

should read the modules in sequence of the arrows mentioned here. Within a level, first read the modules of AG series

and then read those of the AT series.

Introduction


Introduction

In the AG series, the rules of Arabic grammar and rhetoric are taught and their practice is done through applying them

on the Arabic text. On the other hand, the AT series contains large number of passages from the Holy Quran, the

Hadith and Islamic literature having extremely rich vocabulary. You will be asked to translate these passages by using

the vocabulary provided on the same page. These tasks is designed in a way that such vocabulary as well as grammar

rules will automatically become part of your memory without any additional effort. The modules are organized in the

following way.

The Basic Level

It contains six modules out of which three are related to language rules and three include Arabic text. The detail is as

follows:

• AG00: The objective of this module is to enable you to read the Arabic script. If you already read the Arabic script,

you can skip this module and directly start from AG01 but a glance over AG00 will be helpful as you will be able to

learn the differences in the script used in different parts of the world.

• AG01: This module contains the basics of Arabic grammar.

• AG02: It includes further details of the Arabic grammar including essentials of I’lm un Nahv.

• AT01: This module will enable you to understand the basic Arabic used in the routine life to perform basic religious

rituals.

• AT02: The objective of this module is to enhance your vocabulary and by end of this module, you will be able to

understand 15-20% of routine Arabic passages.

• AT03: You will further enhance your vocabulary in this module and will be able to understand 30-40% of Arabic

passages.

When you will complete the “Basic Level”, you will be able to understand daily prayers, Friday sermons and the

Quranic content up to some extent, in sha Allah.

The Intermediate Level

This level includes seven modules, four related to grammar and rhetoric and three related to text. The detail is as

follows:

• AG03: This module includes details of “I’lm ul Balaghah” i.e. the art of eloquence. It includes I’lm ul Ma’ani, I’lm

ul Bayan, and I’lm ul Badee’.

• AG04: It contains advanced details of the art of eloquence and rhetoric. At the end of this module, you will be able

to understand the fine rhetorical details of Arabic language. Although such details are usually taught after

completing the grammar but we have brought them earlier in order to maintain interest of the student because such

discussions are much interesting as compared to grammar.

• AG05: You shall start studying the “I’lm us Sarf” i.e. the art of deriving hundreds of words from a single word, a

unique feature of Arabic.

• AG06: Further details of “I’lm us Sarf” will be dicussed in this module and you will be able to derive hundreds of

words from a single one after completing this module.

• AT04-06: These three modules include large number of Arabic passages of intermediate level and you will be able

to understand 60-70% of the Arabic text after completing these modules.


Introduction

Advanced Level

At advanced level, you will study advanced concepts of grammar and focus more on building your vocabulary. It

contains nine modules, two related to grammar and seven containing text.

• AG07: You will study advanced concepts of “Ilm us Sarf” in this module.

• AG08: This module includes the remaining advanced concepts of “I’lm us Sarf” and “I’lm un Nahv.” At the end of

this module, you will have a complete knowledge of all important concepts of Arabic grammar and rhetoric and you

will be able to analyze Arabic texts from grammatical perspective.

• AT07-AT13: You will read advanced Arabic passages in these modules and at the end of the module AT13, you

will be able to read Arabic books easily. However, you may need to consult a dictionary occasionally.

At the end of this program, you would have learnt the important concepts of different disciplines of Arabic linguistics

e.g. I’lm us Sarf, Nahv, Al-Ma’ani, Al-Bayan, Al-Badee’ etc. You will be able to read Arabic books written during all

ages of Islamic history. An exam will be taken at the end of each level to give you feedback about your capabilities.

In order to set the right expectations, it is essential to tell you that this program is not designed to teach you spoken

Arabic for day-to-day conversation. You will neither be able to speak Arabic nor be able to write in it as our focus is

only comprehension. A religious scholar must be able to understand the Quran, the Hadith and the Islamic literature.

Speaking or writing Arabic is not a key requirement for a religious scholar but an additional capability. In order to

build communication skills, you need an Arabic speaking environment.

We have tried our best to minimize typing errors in these modules, however, if you find any, do inform us. If you have

Lesson 1: Proper and Common Nouns االسم المعرفة و النكرة

Dear Reader!

Like English, the Arabic also has proper and

common nouns. Proper Noun )المعرفة االسم( is

the name of any specific person, thing or place

whereas Common Noun )النكرة االسم( is the

name of any general person, thing or name.


Make your all deals fair. Do not be involved

in malpractices, cheating others or any other

treatment which we do not like for us.

For example, man, book, city are common nouns but 'John', 'Introduction to Arabic Grammar',

'London' are proper nouns. Learn the following rules regarding the Proper and Common Nouns in

Arabic language.

• Names of specific persons or places are Proper Nouns. For example .etc مكة، عبداهللا، محمد،

• All pronouns )الضمير االسم( , pointing nouns )اإلشارة االسم( , and linking pronouns االسم( )الموصول are Proper Nouns. For example الذي ذلك، هذا، كم، هو، etc.

• General names of things, person, or places are Common Nouns. In Arabic, all common nouns

end with a tanveen (double dhammah ◌ fathah ◌ or kasrah ◌ ) at their last letter. For

example شهر بلد، كتاب، رجل، . It means that we are talking about any man, any book, any

city or any month.

• Adjectives (the nouns which indicate an attribute of some person or something) are also

Common Nouns. For example شقي سعيد، جيد، كبير، etc.

• In English, a common noun can be made a proper noun by adding a word 'the' before it.

Similarly, in Arabic, a common noun is converted into a proper noun by adding ال before it.

For example الشهر البلد، الكتاب، الرجل، . It means that we are talking about some specific

man, specific book, specific city and specific month.

• When ال is added to a common noun, its tanveen becomes a single dhammah, fathah or kasrah.

Rule of the Day

In Arabic, there are two type of verbs due to time. One is فعل ماضي (Past Tense) and the other

is فعل مضارع (Present and Future Tense). The same verb is used for both Present and Future

Tense. You have to specify it based on the context.

• There is a ي at the beginning of words with present tense having a pronoun 'he'. For example:

يخفى (He hides), يصور (He shapes).

• There is a ت at the beginning of words with present tense having a pronoun 'you'. For example:

تخفو (You hide), تصور (You shapes).

• There is a ن at the beginning of words with present tense having a pronoun 'we'. For example:

نـفرق (We differentiate), نصور (We shapes).

• There is a نا at the end of words having a pronoun 'our or us'. For example: انصرنا (Help us),

ارحمنا (Be Merciful to us). This word also comes at the end of words in Past Tense. Here it

Lesson 2: Arabic Phrases مركبات

Dear Reader!

In previous lessons, we were learning the different types

of words. From here, we shall start our discussion about

combination of words.


The Quran asks us to fulfill our

contracts and obligations.

Sometimes, words combine to make a phrase. The phrase is an incomplete sentence which does not give

full meaning. For example 'a big house', 'the book of John' etc. Different phrases are combined to make

full sentences. In Arabic, phrases have different types which are as follows:

• :مركب توصيفي This phrase describes a noun along with its some attribute. To describe an attribute, an

adjective is added after the noun. In English, usually the adjective is added before the noun e.g. big

house, good boy, nice book etc. In Arabic, the adjective )صفت ( is used after noun. For example بيت كبير (a big house), صالح ولد (a good boy), جيد كتاب (a nice book). The noun whose adjective is

describes is called .موصوف A توصيفي مركب is also called or صفت و موصوف نعت و منعوت .

• :مركب إضافي This phrase describes the relationship of a noun with another noun. For example, كتاب اهللا (Allah’s book), العلم طلب (demand for knowledge), Obedience) الرسول إطاعة of Prophet). In

Arabic, the belonged noun is brought before the noun to whom the other item belongs. The belonging

noun is always in its possessive case )جر ( .

• :مركب إشاري This phrase includes a noun and a pointing noun. For example هذا البيت (This house),

الكتاب ذالك (That book), This) االمة تلك group of people) The noun of pointing is called إشارة اسمwhereas the noun being pointed out is called إليه مشار . The pointed out noun will have an ال before it.

If the اليه مشار is plural and it belongs to non-intellectual creature, its إشارة will be مؤنث واحد . For

example الكتب تلك (These books). Many grammarians do not consider إشاري مركب a separate type.

They consider it either a إضافي مركب or a توصيفي مركب .

• :مركب جاري This phrase includes a noun and a preposition. For example, من السمآء (from the sky), إلى towards) المسجد the Mosque), like) كالحجارة the stone). We shall discuss it in the lesson of

prepositions.

• :مركب عطفي This phrase describes two nouns combined by a conjunction. For example جاهل و عالم (an ignorant and a scholar), الظالم أو ألعادل (the just or the offender), قبيح أو حسن (good or ugly). We

shall discuss it in the lesson of conjunctions.

Do you know?

In Arabic, pronouns are usually attached at the end of a

word. Similarly, various single-letter words are attached

at the beginning of a word. Therefore, one word is

sometimes a combination of three words.

مركب توصيفيRemember two rules about the توصيفي مركب :

• The basis rule of a توصيفي مركب that the noun and its adjective will always have the same case, the

same gender, and the same number. If the noun is a proper noun, its adjective will also be a proper

noun and vice versa. If one is singular, other will also be singular, if one in plural, other will also be

plural. If one is masculine, other will also be masculine. If one is in subjective case, other will also be

in subjective case …..

• There is one exception to this rule. Arabs divide the nouns into two major categories. The nouns

denoting the name of an intellectual creature e.g. human beings, angels, giants etc and the nouns

denoting the name of a non-intellectual creature e.g. books, animals, plants, furniture etc. If the

موصوف is plural which is not made by rule مكسر جمع and it belongs to non-intellectual creature, its

صفت will be مؤنث واحد . For example, the plural of ر بـيت صغيـ is صغيرة بـيوت (small houses), the plural

of طويل قـلم is long) طويلة أقالم pens), and the plural of أخضر شجر is green) خضرة أشجار trees) etc.

مركب إضافيIt has two nouns. The noun that is associated to other is called , whereas the noun to whom other noun is

associated is called Remember.مضاف the following rules إليه مضاف :

• The basis rule of مضاف is that there is neither an ال can arrive before nor a tanveen (doubt dhammah,

fathah or kasrah) can arrive at its end.

• The إليه مضاف will always be in the possessive case. See the examples of, اهللا كتاب (Allah’s book),

العلم طلب (demand for knowledge), Obedience) الرسول إطاعة of Prophet). Both of these rules are

applied in this case.

• Sometimes, a إضافي مركب may become complex. For example اهللا بيت حج (the Pilgrimage of the

house of Allah), الملك ولد بيت باب (door of house of son of king), اهللا كتاب سورة (chapter of the book

of Allah) etc. In this case, the words coming in the middle of each phrase are مضاف for its successor

but the مضاف for its predecessor. Neither an ال arrived before nor a tanveen arrived at their end.

• You have already learnt that in the words used for ,تثنية ين \ ان are used. Similarly for plural, ين \ ونare used. If such words are used as ,مضاف their ن will be deleted. For example, المدينة مسلمو(Muslims of the city) will be used instead of المدينة مسلمون .

• If the إليه مضاف is a pronoun, it will be used in its possessive case. You have already learnt the

possessive case in previous lessons. For example كتابه (his book), كتابـهما (the book of both of them),

كتابـهن (the book of all of those women), كتابك (your book)

In مركب توصيفي, you will find that the صفت is following its موصوف in case, gender, number and

specification. In مركب إضافي, the مضاف إليه will always be in جر case.

included in modern-day Urdu and Hindi.


Lesson 4: Arabic Sentences جملة

Dear Reader!

In previous lesson, we learnt the phrases. In this lesson,

we shall learn the Arabic Sentence which is called .جملة

Arabic sentences can be classified into two basic

categories:

We shall discuss the فعلية جملة at a later stage. At the moment, we shall focus our discussion on the جملة.اسميةConsider the example of an English sentence. 'Zaid is a man.' In this sentence, there are two parts: One is the

person 'Zaid' about whom something is described. It is called the 'Subject' in English and مبتدا in Arabic. It

is also called إليه مسند . Other part of the sentence is the description about the subject. This is called the

'Predicate' in English and خبر in Arabic. It is also called .مسند

Consider the following points about the اسمية جملة .

• :جملة اسمية This is the sentence which starts with a noun. For example زيد قائم (Zaid is standing).

• :جملة فعلية This is the sentence which starts with a verb. For example Zaid) قام زيد stood up).

• In English, we use the helping verbs like is, am, are, was, were etc. to complete the sentence. In Arabic,

these helping verbs are not used. Instead of that, the subject is used as a proper noun and its predicate is

used as a common noun. As a result of that, the meaning of a helping verb is automatically assumed in the

sentence. If the subject is a common noun, it is made a proper noun by adding an ال before it. For

example كبير البيت (The house is big).

• It is important to note the difference between a توصيفي مركب and a اسمية جملة . In the former, both the

صفت and موصوف are either proper or common nouns. It is not possible that one of them is a proper noun

or other is a common noun. On the contrary, in اسمية جملة , the مبتدا will be a proper noun and its خبر will

be a common noun. For example كبير بيت (a big house) or الكبير البيت (the big house) is an example of .

On the other side كبير البيت (the house is big) is an example of اسمية جملة .

• The predicate follows its subject in case, gender and number. If the subject is مذكر واحد , its predicate will

also be مذكر واحد . If the subject is مؤنث تثنية , its predicate will also be مؤنث تثنية and so on. For example,

صادقان الرجالن (The two men are truthful), صالحات المسلمات (Muslim women are pious).

• If the subject is مكسر جمع of any non-intellectual noun, its predicate will be مؤنث واحد . For example

the) طويلة األشجار trees are long).

Rule of the Day: The Pointing Nouns of مؤنث واحد are used with plural nouns for non-intellectual things.

For example, جديدة كتب هذه (these new books), وحرث أنـعام هذه (these cattle and tilth), التماثيل هذه (these

idols), األنـهار هذه (these rivers) etc.

Lesson 5: Variations in the Sentences starting with a Noun جملة اسمية

Dear Reader!

In previous lesson, we learnt the اسمية جملة . In this

lesson, we shall discuss further aspects of it.


Remember Allah every time. Consider

that your Lord is watching you.

• A اسمية جملة can be made negative by adding a word ما before it. For example, قائم زيد (Zaid is standing).

If we add a ما before it, it will become, قائما زيد ما (Zaid is not standing). Instead of ,ما you can also use

the word .ليس It adds some emphasis to the sentence. The sentence will become قائما زيد ليس (Zaid is not

standing). For the time being, use the word ليس only with مذكر واحد .

• An important point to note is that adding a negative word before the sentence results in a change in form

of the .خبر Originally, it was in .رفع Now it has changed to .نصب• Another way to make a sentence negative is to add a ما or .ليس Add a ب before the خبر and convert it to

.جر For example, بقائم زيد ما (Zaid is not standing), بقائم زيد ليس (Zaid is not standing). It makes no

difference in the meaning but as a result of that the case is changed.

• You can make a اسمية جملة interrogative by adding a word هل before it. Alternatively, you can add the

word .أ In both cases, there will be no impact on the form of words but the meaning will be changed to

interrogative. For example, قائم زيد هل (Is Zaid standing?), قائم أزيد (Is Zaid standing?). The letter أ is

written with the next word and no space is kept between the two.

• In order to make the اسمية جملة empathetic, usually a word إن or أن is added. It makes the sentence

empathetic and also changes the form. The مبتدا is changed to نصب whereas the خبر remains as it is in its

.رفع For example, قائم زيدا إن (Definitely, Zaid is standing), قائم زيدا أن (Definitely, Zaid is standing).

• In order to convert the اسمية جملة in past tense, usually word كان is used. It has the same impact on the

form as that of .ليس The مبتدا remains as it is whereas the خبر is changed to .نصب Use the word كان only

with مذكر واحد . For example قائما زيد كان (Zaid was standing).

• Sometimes, a مبتدا may be a phrase instead of a single word. For example قائم الصالح الرجل (The pious

Note the interesting fact that from 3-10, the gender of numbers is reversed. For masculine nouns,

the round ة which is the symbol of feminine is added at end of the number and vice versa. The

Rule of the Day! Certain nouns have the same form in both نصب و جر. They are called غير منصرف.

E.g لعمر قلت (I said to Umar.) Some others remain the same in all three forms. They are called مبني. For

used if the number is in objective )نصب( or possessive )جر( cases.

• From 31-39, all numbers are made in the same way by replacing the word عشرون with the .ثلثونSimilarly for 41-49, the word أربعون will be used. In the same manner, you can make words for the

numbers up to 99.

Lesson 9: Harf – Prepositions حروف جرDear Reader!

As we discussed in our first lesson that, like all

other languages, Arabic has some words other

than nouns and verbs. They does not make any

sense without other words. They act as a bridge

between the nouns and the verbs. Fortunately,

their number is very limited. They are called

حرف (plural .(حروف


Be realistic. Do not see only the negative

things in your enemies but also see their

positive aspects. Do not see only the

positive things in yourself but also see you

negative aspects.

You are now already familiar with most of these .حروف We will describe them in this lesson.

In English, there are three types of ,حروف i.e. prepositions, conjunctions and exclamatory words.

Arabic language has the similar kinds of words. We will explain them one by one in the following

tables.

Prepositions

Prepositions are used to describe the position of a noun with respect to a verb. In each language,

prepositions are used in a different way. Due to this reason, during translation, the meaning of a

preposition is not exactly translated into its most used meaning. It requires certain adjustments

during translations. For example, Arabic preposition ب is translated sometimes as 'with',

sometimes as 'on' and sometimes as 'from'.

In Arabic, the prepositions are called جر حروف . They are always used before a noun. That noun is

always written in its possessive case )جر ( . The combination of a preposition with a noun is called

جاري مركب , the preposition itself is called جار أو جر and the noun is called In .مجرور Arabic, there

are many prepositions. Out of these prepositions, following are commonly used in the Quran and

Islamic literature.

TillحتىIt is used to describe the meanings of ‘till’. It describes the ending time of

something.

Commonly-Used PrepositionsPrepositions have several meanings. Their meaning is determined by their context. Prepositions are used

differently in different languages. While translating, we have to revise the preposition according to its use in

the target language. For example, ب stands for ‘with’. In the sentence, دينارينب الكتاب إشتريت (I bought this

book with two dinars), we will replace the word ‘with’ with ‘for’. So the translation will be 'I bought this

book for two dinars'. Similar is the case with other prepositions.

Rule of the Day Word أن ،إن are used to increase emphasis in a sentence. While the word أن adds ‘ing’

to the meaning of a verb. Word إن is synonym of 'if‘ e.g افعل ان تفعل (If you will do than will do.)

Rule of the Day: In Arabic, if you have to praise a person or a thing, you use the word نعم. It gives the meaning of

'What a nice!!!' e.g. نعم المولى (What a nice master). On the contrary, if you have to express your disparagement about

a person or a thing, you use the word بئس. It gives the meaning of 'What a bad!!!' e.g. بئس المصير (What a bad place to

live!!!!). For feminine nouns, words نعمت and بئست are used.

The Next Module ------------ AT01

You have learnt basic concepts of Arabic grammar in this module. It is better to leave the

AT01, AT02 and AT03. You will read some passages from the Quran, the Hadith and the

Arabic literature in these modules to build your vocabulary. You will translate these passages

A مركب جاري is composed of two words: حرف جر، مجرور. The مجرور is the word coming after the حرفجر It is always in its .جر case. For example, في البـيت ،بالحق . Here ب، في are حرف جر and البـيت ،الحقare مجرور.

(2) All pronouns e.g. أنا أنت، هو، etc. (3) All pointing nouns اسم()اإلشارة e.g. تلك ذلك، هذا، etc. (4) All linking pronouns )الموصول اسم( e.g. أولئك التى، الذي، etc. (5)

Nouns having ال at their beginning. (6) Nouns whose إليه مضاف is a proper noun e.g. قـلم حامد، كتاب المدرس etc. The nouns whose إليه مضاف is a common noun are also common nouns e.g. طالب كتاب (a

book of a student) (7) The noun which is called by an exclamatory word e.g. وليدة يا رجل، يا etc.
