Lydia Davis won the Man Booker prize


Lydia Davis, American short story writerhas won the Man Booker Internationalprize 2013.

Her works includes the storycollections Break It Down (1986), Samuel

Johnson Is Indignant(2002) and Varietiesof Disturbance (2007).

Davis, 65, was chosen from a heavyweightlist of ten contenders including U.R.Ananthamurthy of India, Chinese writerYan Lianke and Vladimir Sorokin of Russia.

Rituparno Ghosh passed away

Illustrated Bengali film maker, Rituparno Ghosh,passed away on 30 May 2013 due to cardiacarrest. He started his career in advertising andhis directional debut was Hirer Angti (Thediamond ring).

Ghosh received a National film award for BestDirector for his Bengali film Abohoman starring

Jishu Sengupta, Ananya Chatterjee. Some of hisfilms include 'Chokher Bali', 'Last Lear', 'UnisheApril' and 'Raincoat.

He had bagged 12 National Awards

For "Arekti Premer Golpo", "Memories In March"and "Chitrangada", he faced the camera to showhis acting skills.

MCOCA, the new sensational act

Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999 (MCOCA) is lawenacted by Maharashtra state in India in 1999 to combat organisedcrime and terrorism.

The preamble to MCOCA says that "the existing legal framework, i.e.

the penal and procedural laws and the adjudicatory system, are found tobe rather inadequate to curb or control the menace of organised crime.Government has, therefore, decided to enact a special law with stringentand deterrent provisions including in certain circumstances power tointercept wire, electronic or oral communication to control the menaceof organised crime."

Nicobar islands declared a world biosphere

reserve

UNESCO under its Man and theBiosphere Programme, hasadded The Great Nicobar islandsto the World Network ofBiosphere Reserves which is thehome to indigenous Shompen

people. It is the 9th Indian reserve to be

added to the list.

It incorporates two Nationalparks, the larger Campbell Bay

National Park on the northernpart of the island, and GalatheaNational Park.
