allowed to manufacture fabric – they were required to import fabric from Britain

• Imported fabric was expensive, so every scrap of fabric was used

• The US flag is rumored to be a “quilt” made by Betsy Ross, who owned an upholstery shop

Getting Started• Choosing your

fabrics– Choose a color

scheme– Combine fabrics

with large and small print scales

– Place fabrics to get contrast between prints and colors

Cutting Fabric• In order for the

pieces to fit precisely, every piece must be cut accurately

• Trace pattern piece onto fabric

• Use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler for accuracy

Rotary Cutter• Saves time – can cut through several

layers of fabric at once• Place fabric on the mat• Disengage the safety mechanism• Place a ruler or cutting edge along

the marked line• Roll the blade along the cutting edge

Making the 9 Square Quilt• Carefully pin each

row together• For a precise fit,

sew all seam allowances ¼ inch.

• Begin stitching slowly, removing the pins as you sew.

• Finish your pillow following directions
