WELCOME BACK

President’s letter, continued

Also, each day you volunteer, you will

receive a coupon for 10% off in the store

for mining equipment or Gold

Prospectors of Colorado gear. You can

use up to 4 coupons at one time for a

maximum of 40% off at one time but can

only use the coupons at general

meetings. We also hold special drawingsfor volunteers to win gold separate from

the door prizes.

For those of you who are interested in

volunteering when we have shows there

is an opportunity for you to interact with

the rest of the club members and learn

from some of the old timers.

During our last meeting, we had

members running various types of

equipment for fine gold recovery.

Amazingly, there was some very fine

gold pulled out of black sand that made

my mind up to have a contest to see

which machine was most effective forcleaning up concentrates.

June 12th and 13th we were at the

clubʼs Beaver Creek Claims, snow, snow,

snow and then mud, mud, mud! Thank

you to all those who towed or helped to

tow cars, SUV's and trucks alike in

and out of the claims as the roads

deteriorated throughout the weekend.

20 people showed up first thing and 12

or so more throughout the morning on

Saturday  despite the snow. We headed

up the creek to an area where we know

the gold is. You have to move an

immense amount of rock in order to

obtain it, but, virtually every pan had a

picker and people were happy with the

results of their labor.

  Kingdom days in Breckenridge June

19th and 20th, was a huge success and

a wonderful event with incredibly good

weather. The remaining snow pack on

the mountains made our event on the

side of the Blue river a spectacular one.

The condos that the city of Breckenridge

provided for us were luxurious and very

comfortable as accommodations go for

one of these shows. Thank you to all the

volunteers for a wonderful weekend and

for your help in educating the public as to

our cause in understanding how it was

150 years ago when that 13.5 pound

nugget (Tomʼs Baby)was found only a

short distance from where we did our

demonstrations.

June 26th and 27th will be the Rock

Fair at the Western Museum of Mining

and Industry at 225 North Gate Rd. in

Colorado Springs. For information visit

www.wmmi.org or call the museum at

719-488-0880. We will have our gold

panning demonstrations set up  on the

lawn under the trees, and there will be a

pot luck dinner at the end for volunteers.

July 3rd and 4th we have a gold

panning demonstration set up in Frisco,

Colorado for Founders Day at the park

where there will be bands, ice cream and

lots of activities all weekend as well as

speakers on the history of the area. Wewill close early on the 4th in order to

make room for the fireworks display.

On July 10th Gold Prospectors of

Colorado is having it's first annual

women's gold prospecting day, held at

Woody's claims just 4 miles south of

Salida on the Arkansas river. Invite your

friends (Women Only) you'll have an

opportunity to have a first hand

experience with using pans, sluices,

dredges, high bankers & spiral wheels

for your fine gold recovery from your

concentrates. Anyone needing dirt dug at

the location of your choice we havevolunteers (sworn to silence) for labor

and cooking dinner for you all. Don't

worry, a bathroom will be provided.

July 14th thru 17th is the Pikes Peak

or Bust Rodeo at the Norris Penrose

Rodeo grounds and events center on Rio

Grand Street formerly known as Old

Lower Gold Camp road just west of the

Walmart on 8th street.

July 18th is another new member outing at Woody's claims wherehopefully we will have dry washers to contribute to the event. We are

looking for people to volunteer their dry washers and experience as well

as needing someone to help with metal detecting. Please contact Bob

Hale to notify him along with a phone number.

July 24th and 25th is Burro days in Fairplay, Colorado. This is

another gold panning demonstration event that is in the park downtown

across from the Old South Park City. It is only a 10 minute drive from our

Beaver Creek claims which is a wonderful place to spend the night and get

a little panning in for yourself.  For those who volunteer at this show I'll

show you where the gold is!

Now, last but not least, coming on July 30th, 31st and August 1st we

have our annual Gold Panning Championships in Breckenridge, Colorado.

We will have the Nationals, World Style, Skill, Speed and World Dry

including Women's, Men, Juniors and Old Timers events where you canwin Olympic Style Medals. As far as I'm concerned, this is the single most

awesome event of the year.

The Naming of FairplayQuoted from:The Western Slope. Colorado Pioneers in Picture and

Story. Polk, Alice. Brock-Haffner. Denver. Pages 396-397.

“Arriving at the hotel, we were ushered into a large,

square room, called the parlor. The only articles offurniture visible were a round table, as large as King

Arthurʼs, and a few chairs. When the

proprietor became aware that I wasgathering material for a book, he

kindly brought in the pioneers to seeme.

One of them told me of the naming of

Fairplay. “In 1859,” said he, “certainparties made a discovery of richplacer diggings in the South Park, at

or near what is now called Hamilton. These diggings were so rich that it

was said one ordinary laborer could

dig a pound of gold per day. Thename Tarry-all was given by thediscoverers, who laid claim to all thevaluable ground, or to use a frontier

phrase, ʻgobbled upʼ everything, so that later comerscould not secure any mining ground without paying

exorbitant prices for it. By reason of this the place wascalled ʻGrab-all” by those who failed to get a show in the

diggings.

The disappointed fortune-seekers subsequently pushed

further on along the middle branch of the Platte and theremade other valuable discoveries. Among the number

were four men from Central, then called Gregory, who, having heard the fabulous stories in circulation respecting

the new mines, clubbed together, and loaded a mule, thatbelonged to one of the men, with all their earthlypossessions, and started for the new mining camp.

They had stopped at the above mentioned camp and

panned out considerable gold, making one of the men, bythe name of Hill, banker. Their provision gave out and Hill

refused to let them have money to buy more, whichimmediately aroused their suspicions.

One of the party, a man named Tom Payne, laid theicomplaint before Reed, Mills & Company, who had aprovision store. They called the miners together to

arbitrate on the subject, and after patiently hearing theevidence, it was decided that Mr. Hill must weigh the gold

and give every man an equal share. While they weretalking around the camp fire Hill plunged out of the cabin

into the dark, and the miners started in quick pursuiKeeping track of him by the cracking of the grass and dry

branches under his feet.

Finding it impossible to escape them

he made a wide circuit and enteredhis cabin, where they found him in

bed, covered up head and heelsThey dragged him out, took the gold

dust, and, in the presence of thearbitrators, weighed it and gave eachman his portion. Hill refused to

receive his, but they held him, andwhile he struggled in resistance, they

put the money in his pocket.

James Reynolds, who afterwardsbecame a notorious guerrilla, stood

by, with his hands in his pockets

quietly watching the transaction. When finished, heexclaimed: “Thar, bʼgad, if one is the devil and tʼother Tom

Payne, they shall have ʻ  Far play! ̓

Shortly after this a committee was appointed to draft rulesfor the district and give it a name. Captain CharlesNichols, John Reed and Sydenham Mills were the

committee. After drafting the rules, it was agreed that Mr

Mills, being the oldest miner should give the name. Hehad taken an active part in the incident above narratedand with his mind strongly imbued with the idea tha

everyone in that camp must have justice, named the town

ʻFairplay.'”

Territory Days

The Apprentice PapersBy Lauri Gephart

I’ve volunteered to write a series of articlesduring my first year (or so) of membership inthe Gold Prospectors of Colorado to give aNew-bee’s perspective of what we as a clubdo to have fun, how we learn about our forefather’s trade, and how we interact withthe communities around us. The goal is toencourage other apprentices to be active, tobe curious and to appreciate all that goes intorunning this organization. Keep in mind, I aman apprentice and not an all-knowinggoomba, so I may mess up some of myinformation from time to time. Don’t shoot themessenger, ok?

I joined GPOC in March 2010, just about sixmonths after purchasing my first piece of equipment. I hadn’t been to a river in almostsix months and knew that I would need a lotof help if I wanted to have a change atgetting very good at this gold prospectingand panning thing. I say it like that becauseof the mass confusion out there (and in mymind of course) when it comes to identifying apiece of the river that (a)has gold, (b) is onpublic land or owned by a friend that saysyes to panning use, and (c) is not alreadyclaimed and otherwise off-limits. I alsothought it would help if I could figure out how

to get the gold in my pan to show itself to meso I can move it from the pan to the little glass(three ounce) vile I bought to hold mytreasures. Two thoughts at this point: Not allthat glitters is gold! Three ounces of goldmay take a lifetime to collect.

My first GPOC meeting was amazing! I’mguessing there were over 100 members there, and maybe 10 or so first timers. Granted, Iam not the extrovert that I would like to be,but I still managed to have a couple of conversations with other members during thenight. The active members were very friendly

as I went through the sign-up process and as Ibrowsed the supplies that the store hadavailable that night. I’ll never forget Helen, who encouraged me to bring in myconcentrates (already classified and initially

panned to the black sand and gold) to thenext meeting and she would show me how topull out my gold. I also participated in thedoor prize raffle and won my first goldnugget! Maybe my three ounces of gold isnot that far off after all... The speaker thatnight was way over my head at the time, butafter just a few months of field work, I wouldlike to hear him again.

My first field trip with the club was in April to

Woody’s Claim, even before Woody sold it tothe Club. It was my first new member outingand I was amazed by all the members (newand old) that came out and the number of methods they used to extract gold. The firstperson I met when I arrived was Ben. Luckily,he is not shy at all, as he welcomed me andimmediately teamed me up with Trish whoquickly became my friend and mentor. Trishwas the perfect partner in training - she hasthe love of the outdoors and a positive energyabout her. Plus she was willing to mentor theapprentice with the patience of a saint. Oneof the first things I noticed was how manypeople came by our little zone in the river tolook at and talk about her new dredging unit.

Very cool, as it was small enough in size tobe able to be put together and used by anindividual, yet powerful and effective inpulling up material for processing. I was, of course, in hog heaven just sitting on a rockand panning to my heart’s content.

On the rest of the river, teams were workingon high-banking (processing dry materialaway from the river using a washer andsluice-type of system), as well as a variety of shapes and sizes of sluices and dredgers thatstay in the river and use the flow of the river to wash material that the prospector adds

2010 Memorial DayWeekend Territory Days

Written by: Richard Stockton

Awe, summer at last. We waited along time for this. This year’s TerritoryDays in Old Colorado City was aspectacular one. To see all the peoplethat were in awe in finding the minerals inthe troughs that the club had setup wasamazing. I got firsthand experiencesalting the troughs with gold. Volunteersfor the Club brought equipment to educatethe public in fine gold recovery methods. Ienjoyed every minute of my volunteering.

We had so many people panning, that youcouldn’t have squeezed in another person!I heard from people in the Club that thesales were up as well as increased interestin becoming a club member. The weather was perfect, no rain whatsoever, just hadto bear the wind at times as well as theheat on Saturday. To see the smiles andexcitement as people saw the fruits of their actions is what it’s all about. Darn, wehave another year to go until the fun startsall over again. Sign me up now, I’m in!

The Apprentice Papers, continued

On this day Ben’s 16 year-old son Ben waseven using a wetsuit and snorkel to pulldeeper material up from the river bottomfor processing. Because our club membersare friendly, I learned that every methodhas its own advantages and uses, as well asa set of rules and restrictions, mostly

geared toward preserving the quality of thewater and environment. Dredging, for example, requires an annual permit for useand, yes the authorities do check on thepermits when they stop by. The good newsis that these folks also have a lot of information to share and seem

genuinely interested in prospecting as anoutdoor recreational activity.

After the day’s work was finished, severalmembers stuck around and enjoyed somequiet (and not so quiet) conversations abouthe day’s events and those affecting our world. Don brought out an amazing gold

separating system and ran someconcentrates as he demonstrated itseffectiveness. Many spent the night atWoody’s and stayed to play again the nextday. Enough for now - much more leftunspoken that will be topics for futurearticles - hope you enjoyed this one!
