TOP GEAR PRINTQPP might just be the most influential magazine in print.

Not for the first time QPP has been likened to Top Gear for its approach to hands on road testing. It’s not hyperbole to suggest that when Maureen and me first appeared in old-style Copy Shop News, the style changed the face of modern frontline printing journalism. We did this by realising that people were less interested in being told about a copier’s first copy out timing, compression ratios and paper sizes, than they were in knowing whether; a), said printer would improve their general quality of life; and b), if being seen using one would make attractive people want to sleep with them.

When QPP rebadged in 2012, the 36,000 Quick Print Professionals took to this philosophy, enjoyed the added rocket-boosters and ran with it. The rest, as they say, is history.

As far as the Team QPP print history goes, it’s fair to say we practice what we preach. Over the years, our beta test suite, (Colourfast print room) has played host to a variety of exotic print equipment including a Konica Minolta bizhub pro, Xerox digital press, Duplo DC6 series, UMG drop head Ghia and Neopost Gallardo Spyder. Well, you would, wouldn’t you? Call me a toner head but digital print matters.

See you at the print shows.Peter, Jeremy Richard James Stig, Foulkes

Trafford Park based print and design supplier, Manchester Printers Ltd, has signed-up as main club sponsor of Manchester’s American Football team, Manchester Titans, for the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 seasons.

As part of the partnership, Manchester Printers will supply the Titans with all club promotional materials over the coming two years, branded polo shirts for all players and coaches, as well as a significant financial investment that will help support upkeep of the club and grassroots development of American Football in Manchester and the surrounding areas.

From the start of the coming season, all of the Titans’ match day sportswear and helmets will carry Manchester Printers’ logo.

Founded in 2003 and now based at Salford City Stadium, Manchester Titans has grown significantly as a club over the last decade, culminating in the recent appointment of British American Football legend, Nigel Dias, as Senior Team Head Coach.

Gavin Page, Managing Director at Manchester Printers, said: “We have been looking to sponsor a local sports team for some time now and feel that Manchester Titans are an ideal partner for us. American Football is a rapidly developing sport on our shores with increasing terrestrial television coverage of the NFL and annual games taking place at Wembley Stadium.

“We are confident that our production of quality print goods for the Titans will help grow their fan base across the region, as well as promote our print services, in a truly mutually beneficial partnership. Everyone at Manchester Printers is excited to see how our sponsorship can help develop the sport in and around Manchester.”

Jonathan Homer, General Manager of Manchester Titans, added: “We are delighted to be able to welcome Manchester Printers as our official team sponsors. One of our key aims as a club is to build lasting relationships with businesses in our community.”

Manchester Printers supplies flyers, leaflets, brochures, business cards, POS and other items to SMEs via its online store, and boasts an enviable portfolio of clients including the BBC, NUS, Performance Products, Guinness Partnership Housing Trust, Northwood Housing Trust and the NHS, to name but a few.www.manchesterprinters.com

duplo offers Guillotining BenchmarkingTo coincide with the recent launch of the new IDEAL 4860-ET guillotine, print finishing specialist Duplo International has announced a nationwide “productivity assessment” programme inviting existing small format guillotine users to benchmark their current machine against the new model.

The German made 4860-ET has a 475mm cutting length and is designed to work alongside SRA3 format print engines. Crucially, it features light beam safety guards which Duplo herald as a technological first at this end of the market. Marc Legge, Marketing Manager at Duplo explained, “Light beam guards are usually only available on much larger format guillotines. At this level, plastic guards are the norm but these can really slow down production so the 4860-ET has the potential to cut guillotining time drastically for these customers.”

Duplo has set-up a “productivity test” tool on its ideal-uk.co.uk website to enable users to benchmark their existing guillotine against the new model. The simple tool allows you to enter some

basic information about your current guillotine and the type of work you produce. It then calculates and compares its productivity against the 4860-ET.

Marc concluded, “This tool is really designed to get people thinking about their workflow and give them an idea of how productive their guillotine is against the best in the market today. Guillotines tend to be last in the queue when it comes to equipment upgrades because people don’t think the technology changes much. Of course every company is different but we’re certain that anyone with a physical style guard would see significant productivity improvements.”

IDEAL guillotines are available from Duplo’s UK-wide dealer network. As part of the current upgrade programme, registered dealers are offering consultations and favourable trade-in terms for anyone upgrading to the 4860-ET. Contact Duplo or your local IDEAL dealer for details.for more information call duplo on 01932 263 905 or email [email protected], www.duplointernational.com

Bozboz’s creativity showcases potential of VitrocolourThe meeting room in the new offices of Sussex based full service digital agency Bozboz fully exploits the potential of Lintec Graphic Films’ Vitrocolour non-PVC process colour film to realise vibrant, eye catching glass surface treatments.

On the room’s three metre high glass wall, richly coloured, robot like marine creatures swim in and out of a coral reef composed of USB sticks and headphone jacks — an arresting fusion of the technology focus and ‘thinking out of the box’ creativity that Bozboz prides itself on. The concept complements the equally stunning underwater themed wall murals that stamp the Bozboz brand on other areas of the offices — the work of artists (and Bozboz clients) Goldie and Tats Cru.

Founded in 2008, initially to provide creative services to mostly local businesses, Bozboz’s expanding client list now includes major brands such as Virgin, Skint Records and Pets Corner. Under the broad heading of web design and digital strategy, the agency provides a wide variety of digital marketing services, from bespoke support for single components of a project to end to end digital strategies.

The agency’s new offices are in a striking Victorian corner building — formerly a bank — in Church Road, Hove. Says CEO Mike Hollingbery: “We wanted a unique space that we could customise. It took a while to find Church Road, but with a wealth of 200 yea r old architectural features, like the 20 foot ceilings, it fitted the bill perfectly. Our business is built around people and ideas, and we want a visually inspiring workplace.”

Removing the interior walls exposed the original central pillars and restored the space to its original

proportions. To display these while also dividing the space into useable office and meeting areas, Bozboz specified partitions consisting of three metre high single panels of toughened glass.

Health and safety mandated that the glass walls had to be demarcated, and the all important meeting room area also had to have a significant degree of privacy — but Bozboz didn’t see why these relatively functional requirements shouldn’t be realised with

the same creativity displayed in the rest of the space. Mike continues: “We wanted something that complemented the rest of the design, creating a seamless blend with the other visual elements and in keeping with the look and feel of the overall environment. The answer was a bespoke design and high end printing.”

Bozboz’s in-house graphics team came up with the USB and headphone jack reef, and after extensive research into environmentally friendly process colour films on the market, Vitrocolour from Lintec Graphic Films was specified for the meeting room walls. “We looked at a lot of film samples,” says Mike, “but nothing matched the quality and colour intensity of Vitrocolour. It was the only film that could match the striking colours in the office.”

Lintec Graphic Films’ Vitrocolour is a UV-printable gloss polyester with exceptional scratch resistance, which is especially beneficial for any unprinted areas. The non-PVC film combines exceptional optical clarity, ease of installation and impressive environmental credentials. Capable of being printed with any number of colours, Vitrocolour allows designers to devise vibrant, eye catching

glass surface treatments. Light transmission, colour and positioning can all be varied to provide bespoke treatments tailored to the nature of the space.

Fading can also be applied to all parts of the film, to create see through, privacy of manifestation as required. A high specification self adhesive coating ensures both installation and removal are quick and clean, causing minimal disruption to the working environment and enabling cost effective rapid re-brand and ‘refresh’ programmes. Vitrocolour films are cleanroom manufactured to avoid contamination by dust particles, and hard-coated for scratch-resistance and durability.

“We’re delighted with the end result,” concludes Mike, “and our clients are equally impressed. It’s got a lot of attention, thanks in no small measure to the way Vitrocolour helped us bring our ideas to life. We like finding new ways to create lasting impressions, and in our new offices we’ve done just that.”for further information on lintec Graphic films, please visit: www.lintecgraphicfilms.com

four years ago Leicester based Tudor Specialist Print Finishers invested in a Bourg BB3002 Perfect Binder, enabling them to offer high quality adhesive binding with short lead times. They have recently bought, installed and are running their second machine, increasing their capabilities for digital on-demand finishing and continuing to offer excellent service, competitive pricing and assured quality to their clients.

Ian Chamberlain MD says, “The BB3002 is a unique design based on total automation. The touch screen controls brings to the BB3002 a great versatility and produces books of a durable and professional quality. We can now offer a quick turn around without customers having to absorb the heavy make ready costs of a multi-station binder.”

Such is the current success of the company, the purchase of a second perfect binder will ensure that any production downtime for whatever reason, will be kept to a minimum.

Ian continues, “A huge part of our business is ‘time sensitive’. Whether it’s an exhibition, demonstration for a sporting event such as football programmes, these are jobs that cannot go out late. Also, the nature of customers buying habits at this time means ordering is left right until the last minute. The BB3002 Binder allows us to meet those tight deadlines.”

Thanks to the new BB3002 Tudor Specialist Print Finishers are geared up for both small and large runs. Currently they have an order for 60,000 copies with variable print data which they can run over 30 days.

The Bourg BB3002 Perfect Binder also features in-line creasing to ensure full quality control and is capable of producing 6pp or 8pp covers. It has a

full size range of DL to A4 landscape to a maximum of 320mm x 385mm with book thicknesses from 1mm to 60mm and a maximum production speed of 500 books per hour. It is suitable for digitally printed loose leaf collated sets and available in PUR and EVA glue options.

Having worked with the BB3002 for four years, Ian Chamberlain’s decision to purchase a second was an easy one. Impressed with the quality and reliability of the product, there would be no extra demos or training required either. Within two hours of installation the second machine was on its first job, and hasn’t stopped since.

Both Bourg BB3002 binders were supplied by TCS who are exclusive UK distributors for Bourg products. Tudor Specalist Print Finishers have dealt with TCS for a while as they provide their guillotine servicing and parts and maintenance for the first Bourg BB3002.for more information on the Bourg range of digital finishing systems please visit www.terrycooperservices.co.uk or call: 0115 970 2248.

MiMaki has unveiled its Fespa 2013 plans with the launch of a fun, customer based website MyMimaki.com and a photo competition. The show at London’s ExCel runs from June 25th to 29th and Mimaki can be found on stand J5S.

To celebrate the unveiling of MyMimaki.com website, its customers are being asked to get creative for a photo competition by uploading fun images of their Mimaki systems. Dubbed as the “Me & My Mimaki Photo Contest”, the competition offers a prize package worth more than €5,000.

“We wanted to use the platform of FESPA to highlight the very exciting results achievable on our portfolio of systems and help customers celebrate the capabilities possible, which is why we have launched MyMimaki.com,” said Mike Horsten, Marketing Manager of Mimaki EMEA “Our solutions help customers be as responsive and proactive as possible but it is their energy and creativity that is vital to ensuring their long-term success.”

The emphasis on the fun is continued with the Mimaki-sponsored FESPA Wrap Cup Masters Series and the photo competition’s winner being flown to London with two sought-after VIP tickets to FESPA, paid on-site transportation, as well as FESPA gala invites.

On display at Fespa 2013 will be the JFX500-2131 grand format UV flatbed printer, tabled to have its UK & Irish launch on exclusive Mimaki distributor, Hybrid’s stand at Sign &Digital this month. With printing speeds up to 60 square metres per hour, the printer sets a new standard in speed, flexibility, quality and environmental sustainability.

Hybrid’s John de la Roche comments: “The Mimaki JFX500 incorporates a brand new printhead and advanced LED curing. It brings new efficiency,

quality and price/performance to the sign and graphics industry and wide format display marketplace. Its advanced head movement control produces an exceptionally high resolution image quality that can produce legible fonts as small as two point.”

The JFX500-2131 will be joined by Mimaki’s TS500-1800. With an unrivalled speed of 150 square metres per hour, it is the world’s fastest printer for transfer paper and is ideal for the textile market.

Also on show will be Mimaki’s UJF-6042 A2-format flatbed printer that builds on the success of the smaller UJF-3042 series, while offering greater versatility and spectacular photo-quality print reproduction onto an almost limitless range of media.

Furthermore, its larger print area opens up a whole new world of possibilities for end users in the higher volume production market, where even higher quality is demanded.

Promoting a mix of innovative technologies with social networking, Mimaki’s booth will feature its strong product portfolio, with latex/eco corner, innovative UV printing solutions, creative samples, and an “aquarium” where creative young students will show visitors job concept/design to realisation.more details about mimaki products, including those featured at the show can be found at www.hybridservices.co.uk. for the fun new website, visit www.mymimaki.com.

Neschen is expecting this high performance film to prove increasingly popular in stores and shops with constantly changing advertising messages. The films — glossy, matte or clear — can be printed with solvent, eco-solvent, UV-curable and latex inks, all delivering outstanding print quality with bold and vibrant colours.

The dot-type adhesive coating provides a channel for air to move, enabling the films to be evenly applied by inexperienced staff without bubbles or creases. After use, the film can then be removed from almost any substrate residue-free. The PE backing paper ensures that the film lies flat in the printer and there is no need for an additional protective film when used indoors.

SolVoPrinT and erfurT wallPaPerWall covering applications are a rapidly expanding marketing not only in traditional interior design but in the use of wall paper media in applications like event graphics, retail signage, corporate interior design and performance/theatre graphics. xerox’s new Production Printer Brings in More Jobs

PrinT service providers can capture more variable data print jobs with the new Xerox Colour 8250 Production Printer — an economical choice that is versatile enough to meet the demanding needs of this marketplace.

The system is targeted for 800,000 to four million impressions per month and will deliver variable, vibrant colour. It eliminates the need for pre-printed offset shells – allowing print service providers to offer the additional value of one pass colour on statements and direct mail pieces.

Additional features include:• A full complement of workflow offerings supported by the Xerox FreeFlow

Print Server, delivering seamless integration into any print environment. The print server is also equipped with IPDS, PDF, PCL and PS licences and supports LCDS data streams through Xerox FreeFlow VI DesignPro, Lytrod Proform Designer and Solimar PrintDirector Enterprise.

• Automated features move more jobs through production faster, including an optional roll feeder and a variety of inline finishing options.

• Patented technology called Auto Density Control detects streaks in output before they occur and fixes them without operator intervention – ensuring consistent image density across the page.

• Inline Spectrophotometer allows for PANTONE matching and more accurate, repeatable colour.

The introduction of the 8250 follows Xerox’s acquisition of Impika, representing another example of the company’s commitment to ensure customers have technology choices to compete in the transactional marketplace.

The Xerox Colour 8250 Production Printer will be available from 1st July. www.xerox.com

TechnoloGy that keeps print operations profitable is in high demand. Xerox is answering that call with the next generation of its award winning iGen4 platform — the Xerox iGen4 Diamond Edition.

With the iGen4 Diamond Edition, job set up is easier and production times are faster, giving print solution providers a competitive edge when producing brochures, catalogues, magazines and direct mail pieces. The newest iGen4 also has precise, repeatable colour image quality so the first printed piece looks the same as the last one — a must when matching corporate colours and logos.

Many of the enhancements of the iGen4 Diamond Edition are time saving, automated features found on the Xerox iGen 150 Press, including the 660mm (26”) stacker and colour maintenance that takes the complexity and manual labour out of analysing colours.

All the enhancements of the iGen4 Diamond Edition will be available to current iGen4 customers, including:• automatic image to Paper setup — manual setups are replaced with

a predictable, automated routine, eliminating time consuming paper registration adjustments.

• integratedPlus finishing solution for Booklets — using JDF technology, booklet production is simplified with one touch job submission and prepress through automated finishing setup.

• increased efficiency — with either the EFI Fiery Controller or Xerox

FreeFlow Controller, the iGen4 Diamond Edition can handle various workflow solutions to increase production efficiency.

• automated colour maintenance — replaces and eliminates manual steps by analysing colour and notifying the operator when the press is ready for production.

Print solution providers can also use Xerox’s Profit Accelerator Digital Business Resources, the largest collection of business development tools and services in the industry, to make the most of their technology investment.

The iGen4 Diamond Edition will be available from May. for more information, visit www.xerox.com

roland’s fastest most advanced wide format printer

hey Press Go helps your business add value

roland DG introduces the 64 inch SolJet Pro4 XF-640 — the company’s fastest wide format printer to date. The XF-640 incorporates next generation dual print heads and redesigned take up and pinch roller systems, plus a host of other advanced features for high quality imaging at a maximum print speed of 102m²/hr.

“Today, more than ever, high speed large format printers are in demand across our industry,” said Brett Newman, Technical Director, Roland DG (UK). “While high volume production is the goal for many of these businesses, quality imaging is equally important. The XF-640 answers this need in the marketplace by combining exceptional print quality with reliable, high speed performance.”

Designed for both outdoor and indoor applications, the XF-640 is the ideal production tool for signs, banners, vehicle wraps, window graphics, POP displays, exhibition show graphics, posters and more. The XF-640 features new, advanced print control technology that incorporates the industry’s most advanced print heads in a staggered design for maximum productivity. Roland’s newest eco-solvent inks, Eco-Sol Max 2, offer an expanded colour gamut for accurate image recreation as well as fast drying times to boost production and the dual

mirrored CMYK ink configuration virtually eliminates banding for consistent colour imaging.

Like the rest of the Roland printer line, the XF-640 is easy to operate. A redesigned front loading ink cartridge unit provides easy ink access. With the XF-640, media loading levers are positioned in both the front and back for maximum convenience. Special media brackets support even the heaviest media rolls as they are loaded into place.

The XF-640 joins the SolJet Pro 4 XR-640, Roland’s widest and fastest printer/cutter to date. The XR-640 also features advanced print head technology, mirrored print head configuration and Roland’s Eco-Sol Max 2 inks, but the integrated print/cutter streamlines production by automatically printing and contour cutting printed graphics with extreme precision. www.rolanddg.co.uk/beast

a new range of pre-packaged templating products for digital press users has been launched to positive acclaim from industry professionals.

The new product, HeyPressGo!, enables anyone with a digital printing press to offer pre-die cut products or goalpost glued mailers to clients who seek smaller runs without racking up any serious expense.

The idea was developed by managing director Peter Melkowski of Print Solutions Print Finishers in Peterborough, who saw potential by preparing pre-cut and pre-glued SRA3 sheets for commonly requested items such as tent cards, presentation folders, surveys and mailers.

‘The concept is not new,’ he said. ‘I started by developing the products my clients wanted

into a more standard format which meant the process of producing what originally had been a complicated affair became simplified.’

He added, ‘All I have done is reverse the production process by pre-cutting or gluing virgin stock which the printer places straight

into the digital press, they simply position their artwork, print, trim in the normal way and ‘HeyPressGo!’ the job is done!’

The products have led to the formation of HeyPressGo Products Ltd, which will market and sell the items both online and through approved

networks. ‘HeyPressGo may be in its infancy but it intends to roll out new products on a regular basis’, Peter explained ‘We actively welcome new ideas to develop further, this will enable us to keep our clients up to date with market trends. W+e also hope to offer a good selection of general print room consumables too, so getting to know us will be a key advantage in the production cycle’.

Print Solutions is a dedicated bespoke print finishing company based in Peterborough and offers a full range of services to both litho and digital printing companies.

It is obvious from this latest development that it is in tune with what is needed in the modern print market, so watch out for more innovative ideas coming through in the future.www.heypressgo.co.uk, www.printsolutions.uk.com

larGe forMaT PrinTinG — anything over A3 — tends to go in two apparently opposite

directions, one for speed and economy and the other for quality at a cost.

Toner based printers have serviced the plan print market for some time, and are fast, but with a high initial cost, especially for colour, it was inevitable that the affordable inkjet would take a good slice of the market, dominated for some time by HP.

Epson tended to be associated with the high quality art and photographic applications, though it always produced several functional machines for posters and proofing. The introduction, at Drupa last year, of a new range of SureColour wide format printers marked a serious attack upon the most popular customer demand.

The range has 44 and 36 inch width sizes but we chose to test the 24 inch T3000 which is likely to be the most practical in the print shop environment, printing up to short edge A1 from roll, cut sheet and even board. This immediately makes it the most adaptable machine as it will print items as small as several inches as long as the paper will fit in the machine, and the heads can be adjusted to take several thicknesses of media.

The printer shares Epson’s sensible formula of placing the media above the print heads so that gravity assists the operation, although the print platform itself has been widened to ensure the paper is kept flat and wrinkle free during printing. Roll media uses individual bobbins at either end rather than a spindle making changing paper much easier, and large shoulder guides ease installation for perfect positioning.

This still gives the machine a small footprint, and additionally all necessary access points, like the maintenance and ink tanks are at the front, allowing it to be placed against a wall for space saving.

Although only a four colour in operation, it has an additional black option — photo black and matte black are swopped automatically depending on media settings — and newly developed Ultra Chrome XD inks mean both high density blacks for detailed drwawings, and fine quality colour saturation for posters and other artwork.

Pigment inks mean a high degree of water resistance, and quick drying means even full coverage items can been trimmed and laminated straight out of the box.

Epson printers have always had a good reputation for being robust and user friendly. The Surecolour range takes this to another level, aware that it is likely to be used by operators new to large format, or who don’t have time to mess around with multiple media settings and colour profiles. You can still do all that, but in automated mode, you can rely on the printer to work out the complicated stuff. On start up it checks the status of the inks and adjusts accordingly.

When loading new roll media you can set the length and it will print a bar code when you change paper, letting you know how much is left when you next load it. It will also remember to trim this off before you start printing.

A nice big readable status panel on the printer, and friendly, clearly marked buttons help the operator select options, and even the warning light has been made extra large so that it can be

seen across the studio, instead of having to go over to the controls to see why something hasn’t printed. Lots of thoughtful detail have gone in to this machine for its intended use.

At the computer end, the user interface has a layout manager that can nest jobs automatically and manually, and can also print multiple pages, booklet style for presentations, or tile large sizes with trim margins for stitching oversized posters. All of this is done with easy to follow graphics on the screen.

In draft mode, the T3000 can print an A1 in just 28 seconds, but even at maximum quality, 2880x1440dpi, a full colour poster will pop out ready to rock in minutes. An accurate monitoring of media and ink usage means jobs can be costed to the penny and prices adjusted accordingly.

The printer achieves the remarkable trick of providing both speed and quality optioins by running two paired heads for each colour. If any blockage occurs the heads can be cleaned in pairs to save ink usage.

A number of optional extras include a powered take up roll for long run printing, and a 250GB HDD drive for spool printing. With the addition of a scanner, like the Epson DS6500 the T3000 can also be turned into a straight copier/colour enlarger without the need of a computer. It just plugs straight it.

The speed and usability of the printer were fairly predictable, but the quality of output was a surprise. We have been running an eight colour Epson Stylus Pro 7890 for more than a year to cater for the professional photography and artists speciality market, so have a pretty good reference point.

Offsetting cost, quality and speed In printing terms the mythical search for the Holy Grail would be to find print room equipment that would do it’s job with incredible quality, fast speed and at a ridiculously cheap price. Martin Christie asks do you need to accept some compromise in price, performance and specification?

Page 23: Quick Print Pro May 2013

While the T3000 may not be able to match the fine extended colour range drop for drop, it’s vibrant inks, matched with suitable media, will flatter a large percentage of regular customer’s offerings, and certainly produce acceptable results for the price. You would have to be pretty picky to fault it.

Pound for pound on both puchase price and economical running costs, it’s a very adaptable and potentially very profitable peice of kit.

encaPSulaTinG SPeed, efficiency and ProfiTleT’S be fair, a laminator is not one of those pieces of kit you are going to get too excited about in the scale of things. It’s a functional device, an essential piece of finishing, but not exactly a high profile part of the print room.

It’s for that reason it might be worth a second look to see if you are making the most profitable use of the service, especially if you have an older, tired and much neglected machine currently doing the job.

Although cheap desktop A4 laminators are generally available to the consumer, A3 and larger are still in the domain of the professional, with the options being either sheet or roll fed, and between single sided lamination and double sided encapsulation.

If you only output digital print up to short edge A3 then it may be that a small footprint sheet feeder is the answer for most tasks, but up-sizing opens

so many more opportunities, not only for finishing customers originals but creating composites from combinations of smaller items.

Lamination obviously improves the longevity and appearance of print, and in doing so increases the range of options available to the digital printer from mere paper to a flexible, scratch-proof water resistant product of adaptable size.

But as with all machines in the shop, it has to be fast, convenient and easy to use. Enter the Vivid’s Matrix MD-650, a roll fed machine designed with a digital print shop in mind. With its own stand, it takes up a limited amount of space and despite being solidly built, can be easily manoeuvered around if not in immediate use.

A sightly smaller MD 450 is available that takes up to short edge A2, but for the extra cost the full width A2, short edge A1, is more adaptable and will be more economic on consumables.

The Matrix Duo is able to do both single sided lamination and double sided encapsulation. Its twin heated rollers operate on thermal film fed from above and below with the option of fitting both gloss and matt finishes at the same time when double siding. This way you don’t need to change rolls for one job, just place the print in the machine facing whichever surface is preferred.

The independently heated rollers give an even distribution of temperature and pressure and are separated from each other when not in use.

The control panel is simple and easy to follow, ideal for a machine that may be used by several operators with basic instruction. A set temperature is chosen, the rollers engaged and operating temperature quickly reached.

A speed control monitors the flow of film both forward and reverse, and there is an anti-jam mechanism. The laminator will seal film at an average speed of a metre a minute. It will run faster but you have to be very careful feeding the initial leading edge of a long print to avoid skew.

A unique anti-curl bar allows quite thin laminates to be used, maximising value on a roll. Vivid’s Boss range of film goes as thin as 27 mic, but even on an average of twice that thickness, that’s a lot of A1s and twice as many A2s on a 100metre or more roll.

Even allowing for a certain amount of extra run through wasted as the lamination feeds through the machine, a roll system scores heavily over sheet fed pouches which start at a minimum 150 mic and get expensive per unit as they go up to A1 size.

The wastage issue is an important consideration with either device as if a print gets trashed it’s a cost of time and material. The larger pouches can also be difficult to store, needing to be kept flat and dust free, and easily damaged from an open pack. On a roll the film is effectively self sealed, and a little run on to clear any marks or creases is a worthwhile loss for overall efficiency.

If you are doing large format inkjet printing then large format laminating in house is essential. Nobody wants to put up with the time delay of outsourcing these days. To stay ahead of the competition it has to be supplied on demand and the Matrix and consumables are a perfect complement to inkjet prints with even heavy colour coverage producing a seamless bubble free finish from prints straight from the printer.

The 650 is an ideal size, with the majority of prints being up to 24-inch short edge. Beyond that size is a step up in cost and kit needed for handling, as well as the space required.

Checking the printer forums, an interesting comment from an independent Matrix purchaser was that since acquiring the machine it has been used ten times more than expected, because of its ease of use and flexibility. And that’s certainly what we found having lived and worked with the machine for a month or more. It’s one of those essentials that becomes an asset, and at an affordable price.full details from vivid-online.com

arJowiGGinS Graphic, a leader in the development of environmental paper solutions, in partnership with Antalis, has unveiled a high spec, beautifully designed; 80 second video to showcase to business the positive impact using recycled papers has on the environment. Using a combination of origami style animations, real and green screen footage to bring the subject to life, the video introduces the viewer to Paperworld – a magical world, thriving on the synergies between the natural environment and recycled papers.

Designed by production company Banana Split, the video shows a young girl’s journey through dark streets and bustling traffic – guided by a paper chain and brightly coloured origami animals – until she finally reaches the entrancing Paperworld,

buzzing with bright colours and wildlife.Tom Jackson, Head of Programming and

Production, Banana Split said: “We set out to conceive a creative idea that would allow us to showcase the beauty of paper – we believe Paperworld certainly achieves that goal. Working with three different elements on screen was challenging – but against the gritty real world footage, the origami animations do a brilliant job of creatively representing how recycled papers represent the hidden natural elements of the everyday.”

By positioning recycled papers as being ‘one with nature’, the campaign from Arjowiggins Graphic and Antalis aims to deliver a simple message to businesses about the positive impact

of recycled papers. Shannan Hodgson, Arjowiggins Graphic explains:

“Companies are more frequently looking to source supplies that match the requirements of their CSR policies, with 30% of respondents surveyed by Arjowiggins Graphic believing that sourcing sustainable material is the biggest environmental challenge facing their business in the next two-three years. Choosing recycled papers is a simple way for businesses to meet sustainability targets and more and more, it’s what their customers will expect. Recycled papers contribute to a number of savings which include: carbon footprint – water use energy, wood and waste to landfill.” The viral is available to watch at: www.QuickPrintPro.co.uk

anTaliS is now stocking Curious Matter, a luxurious new paper with surprisingly humble roots – as a by-product of potato starch!

As the latest addition to Arjowiggins’ Curious Collection - which includes the innovative Translucents, Metallics, Skin, Touch and Cosmic ranges – Curious Matter is perfect for a wide range of innovative and distinctive applications, from attention-grabbing invitations to statement making clothing labels.

Curious Matter delivers spectacular results with four colour and spot varnish offset printing, digital dry toner printing, lithography and letterpress and is the perfect material for a full range of finishing techniques and processes.

As the paper lends itself well to folding, scoring, laser cutting and lamination processes, it is perfect for distinctive boxing and folding cartons.

Emma Linley, Antalis Creative Papers Product Manager, said: “We are very excited about the addition of Curious Matter to the Curious Collection range, which is exclusive to Antalis. Curious Matter is a whole new breed of paper, which is made using innovative manufacturing processes and recycling industrial waste – it’s hard to believe that such a luxurious paper can be made by recycling this waste!”

Curious Matter is the result of an eight year quest by the Arjowiggins’ research and development team to create daring papers with unique creative characteristics.

The team used microscopic spherical particles of raw starch to create the paper’s unique texture, which to the touch resembles a combination of sand and silk.

Curious Matter is available in four weights: 125g, 135g, 270g and 380g and is ideal for designers with clients in lifestyle-orientated sectors where it is essential to stand out from the ordinary, from food and drink, beauty and cosmetics, to luxury goods.

A swatch is available for the full Curious Collection, including the new Curious Matter range. The swatch also includes a new shade in the Curious Touch Soft Range, Nude, which is a perfect match to its counterpart in the Curious Metallics and Curious Transclucents ranges. The swatch clearly demonstrates all the ranges’ surprising colours, textures and weights. newcaSTle based Mimaki reseller YPS has further cemented its reputation for boosting local businesses with the sale of another Mimaki JV33, this time to promotional print specialist Printmeit.com. The County Durham based PSP is now hoping to expand its product portfolio to include complementary large format products thanks to the 1.3m machine’s versatility.

Printmeit.com started in 2008 by outsourcing ‘every bit of print’: now the company employs eight staff, has a turnover of around £800,000 and can produce 80 per cent of its work in-house. The core of Printmeit.com’s business is in stationery, flyers and promotional gift products, but its investment in the new Mimaki means it can keep more of its banner work in-house and enjoy bigger profit margins, as well as opening up new revenue streams with related products.

“We are delighted with the purchase; it’s been a very wise investment for us,” says Printmeit.com managing director Adam Chetter. “The machine has been running non-stop ever since we bought it and we’re beginning to wonder what we ever did without it.”

Adam has dealt with YPS for Epson inks and media since he met Garry and Paul at an auction a few years ago, and knew he could rely on the company for good advice. “When we were looking to buy a new machine we found that YPS giving us their time and great customer service was influential in our decision making, allowing us to visit them to test drive the JV33 ourselves,” he says of the pre-sale experience. Since the Mimaki has been installed, nothing has changed: “The customer service is second to none, both in terms of knowledge and response.”

So far Printmeit.com has mainly been using its JV33 to print posters and

banners for stands, but Adam says the company has the potential to start offering canvases, bespoke printed wallpaper and outdoor durable banners. Blizzard forecast for feSPa 2013feSPa 2013 (June 25th – 29th at London’s Excel) may see a Blizzard for the first time as DTG Digital launches its new pre-treatment machine at this prestigious show.

Direct to garment ink jet printing has come a long way in the, relatively, short time that it has been around and DTG Digital and Impression Technology Europe (ITE) have been at the forefront for much of that time. Following intense development the company is launching the latest in pre-treat technology, ‘The Blizzard’.

As with screen printing direct to garment needs a white base when printing onto anything other than a white surface. Unlike screen print though a direct to garment machine does not have the benefit of flash curing and it is here that the pre-treat comes into play. When the white ink hits the pre-treated surface a reaction takes place ensuring that the white ink is dry enough to accept the CMYK. Traditionally this process has been carried out manually using a spray gun but this has three major disadvantages. Firstly you can only guess how much pre-treat you are applying and human nature generally dictates that you over compensate. As too much pre-treat can be as bad as too little this is not an ideal situation. Secondly, to ensure that all of the area to be printed is covered there is a tendency to spray a bigger area than is actually needed. Finally there is the problem of contamination. If the spraying is done outside of a spray booth then there is no way to avoid air-born particles being deposited on other surfaces.

The new Pre-Treat machine from DTG Digital and ITE, “The Blizzard”, takes care of all of this for you. With its fully enclosed spraying area the risk of contamination is solved and, with the isolated garment holding section, even garment areas not to be printed are protected. To minimise the amount of pre-treat fluid used the stroke can be adjusted so that only the area to be printed is treated which, when combined with the control for the volume of liquid used, results in a reduction in the amount of fluid used (when compared with the manual method). The thickness of garments is not a problem either as the base, which holds the garment is fully height adjustable so it doesn’t matter whether you are printing a t-shirt or a hoodie. Maintenance and cleaning have also been considered with The Blizzard, which boasts a purging system not only simplifying the cleaning process, but also saving valuable time. Although fully enclosed the unit has a ‘lift-up’ lid to

make cleaning simple and efficient. This new pre-treat machine has been designed and built by a team that

not only understand direct to garment printing but also the importance of efficiency and profitability. Built using modern materials The Blizzard runs on compressed air, so “no electrical mains” connections to worry about. All in all the New DTG Digital “Blizzard” pre-treat machine has been designed to improve efficiency and quality in the direct to garment arena, which it achieves without difficulty. If you are involved in direct to garment printing and you are attending FESPA you really cannot afford to miss The Blizzard, which will be on stand M66N. Roy Burton (Managing Director of ITE) said “We fully appreciate how prestigious FESPA is and we knew that it was a must for The Blizzard. We are really looking forward to seeing the industries reaction to a machine that has been needed for quite a while now”impression Technology europe will be on stand m66n at fesPa but can also be contacted on 01623 861173 or by email at [email protected] www.impressiontechnologyeurope.com

double your money – robin, take it away…

The five ways to increase profit. Yes folks there are really only five fundamental ways to increase profit and we’ll explore them all. 1 Increase the price.2 Sell less but at a higher price.3 Reduce overheads (that includes getting paid quicker and working more

efficiently) 4 Sell more, pretty obvious5 Invest wisely. I guess a sixth would be a mixture of any of these and just think how great it would be if you could do a selection.

So let’s start at number one (a very good place to start) increasing the price of your product or service.

Every organisation is different and what works for one might not work for another but generally the principals are the same.

Price iSn’T eVeryThinGConsider this, when Nomura bought the Victoria Wine retail chain the first thing they did was put up the price of all the peripheral items they sold, crisps, chocolate etc., you get the idea. They knew that a customer who buys a bottle of wine will not go next door to save ten pence on a packet of peanuts, therefore they could safely increase some prices without losing customers. Every few pence extra across all the items sold had an immediate positive effect on cash flow. So, do you have a product that is not price sensitive where you could adjust the price without losing market share? Remember every extra penny makes an impact on your bottom line, and if you sell substantial numbers of a particular item even a tiny increase will have a cumulative effect.

The actual price of a product is only part of the buyer’s consideration, and indeed often not that important. Can you deliver the goods on time and provide the service that goes with it are often key elements in the decision making process and of course does what you sell offer a solution to their current problem, if it does the cost will be secondary so don’t under price yourselves if you can recognise these needs in your prospect.

Sell leSS, earn MoreDon’t we all love that idea? Interestingly many businesses seem to get stuck with the idea that customers won’t buy if the price is too high. Sure you might lose some clients but if you get it right you will either earn more for the same effort or the same amount for less. I’m not suggesting an immediate massive hike in prices, try it and see what works and what doesn’t.

reduce oVerheadSSimple really, everything you spend reduces your profit so addressing costs makes sense, even a quick visit to price comparison websites can be hugely beneficial.

Sell More ProducTSEasy eh? Well not always, particularly in tricky times but the formulae is straightforward. The more you prospect for customers the more you will sell and never be tempted to cut back on marketing. That is what is driving customers to you.

inVeST wiSelyWe can’t always guess what is going to happen in the future, indeed if we could we could all be millionaires. However prudent planning and investment could make a huge difference to you financially. Investing in stock for example or just as relevant not overstocking, investing the time and effort to manage your costs and cash flow could be the best investment you ever make. Investing in machinery that will improve productivity and safety, and don’t forget yourself and the staff, investing in the training and nurturing of the human resource can be invaluable.

So there we are five areas where you could impact on the success of your enterprise, all you have to do is act on them!

uk PoS sells print fasterour thanks to Helen Stott at UK Point of Sale Group for advising how to best promote our new business card business.

Pick of the easily driven website are the card holders and displays products CD54, DA40, SD4B and WD5 which are definitely a good fit for promoting our customers services at the point of need.

Many of the QPP 6600 print shops are planning to increase their business card services. The www.PrintshopOnline.co.uk design online tool is very efficient and with a real shop interface will be a great new profit centre. We are also researching POS for their customers business cards, as all print shops need help displaying their services to our eight million customers.

UK POS products will raise the consumption of the end users business cards. Join in and set a best practice by giving away a display with each order to quicken up the print re-order!Please join in and buy online at www.ukpos.com

banner-king.co.ukMaureen, who runs our own shop Colourfast, is expanding into larger format printing with a bolt on banner shop from Scott at Venture Banners. Colourfast are thinking of using a third party name for the site rather than an obvious division of www.colourfast.co.uk so we can link to this from our existing shop and conduct specific new LFP marketing to share with all our QPP shops to appraise and join in setting some more best practice in print.

We will be reporting on the new banner shop build in our next issue but in the meantime we are pleased to introduce one of your fellow readers who is a few steps ahead. Try putting the template www.banner-king.co.uk open in one tab of your web browser and www.sewardprintsolutions.co.uk in another tab next door. Flicking between the two you will see that without too much work you can have your own branded shop, with a brilliant quote calculator that will save you so much time and embarrassment when next asked how much a banner will cost?

Our research to date warranted this reply:Dear Peter, Many thanks for your very welcome e-mail. I would highly

recommend getting a version of the Banner King website. It has proved invaluable to our business. If you need any help when you get yours, please feel free to ask. Our site was the first real ‘guinea pig’ site – so although it took a while for us to get it working correctly, we too are pleased with the results. Regards Ben Seward.

So good to have another test jockey on board the team at QPP, with all the early blips ironed out we can progress easily, watch this space…

Well engineered joke from across the pond.

A mechanic who worked out of his home had a dog named Mace. Mace had a bad habit of eating all the grass on the mechanics lawn, so the mechanic decided he had to keep Mace inside.

The grass eventually became overgrown. One day the mechanic was working on a car in the backyard and dropped his wrench, losing it in the long grass. He couldn’t find it for the life of him so decided to call it a day.

That night Mace escaped from the house and ate all the grass in the backyard. The next morning the mechanic went outside and saw his wrench glinting in the sunlight.

Realising what had happened he looked towards the heavens and proclaimed: —

‘A grazing Mace, how sweet the hound, who saved a wrench for me!’

serious foreplay“How was your game, dear?” asked Jack’s wife Tracy.

“Well, I was hitting pretty well, but my eyesight’s gotten so bad I couldn’t see where the ball went,” he answered.

“But you’re 75 years old, Jack!” admonished his wife, “Why don’t you take my brother Scott along?”

“But he’s 85 and doesn’t play golf anymore,” protested Jack.

“But he’s got perfect eyesight. He would watch the ball for you,” Tracy pointed out.

The next day Jack teed off with Scott looking on. Jack swung and the ball disappeared down the middle of the fairway. “Do you see it?” asked Jack.

“Yup,” Scott answered. “Well, where is it?” yelled Jack,

peering off into the distance. “I forgot.”

dopey dietA blonde saleslady was terribly overweight, so her doctor put her on a diet.

‘I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you’ll have lost at least five pounds.’

When the blonde returned, she shocked the doctor by losing nearly 20 pounds.

‘Why, that’s amazing!’ the doctor said, ‘Did you follow my instructions?’

The blonde nodded, ‘I’ll tell you though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day.’

‘From hunger, you mean?’ asked the doctor.

‘No, from skipping.’

purfect hubbyA very traditional elderly woman was enjoying a good game of bridge with her girlfriends one evening. ‘Oh, no! I have to rush home and fix dinner for my husband! He’s going to be really ticked if it’s not ready on time!’ she exclaimed suddenly.

When she got home, she realised that she didn’t have enough time to go to the supermarket, and all she had in the cupboard was a wilted lettuce leaf, an egg, and a can of cat food. In a panic, she opened the can of cat food, stirred in the egg, and garnished it with the lettuce leaf just as her husband pulled up.

She greeted her husband and then watched in horror as he sat down to his dinner. To her surprise, the husband really enjoyed his dinner. ‘Darling, this is the best dinner you have made for me in forty years of marriage. You can make this for me

any old day.’ Needless to say, every bridge night

from then on, the woman made her husband the same dish. She told her bridge cronies about it and they were all horrified.

‘You’re going to kill him!’ they exclaimed.

Two months later, her husband died.

The women were sitting around the table playing bridge when one of the cronies said, ‘you killed him! We told you that feeding him that cat food every week would do him in! How can you just sit there so calmly and play bridge knowing you murdered your husband?’

The wife replied, ‘I didn’t kill him. He fell off the mantel while he was licking his ...

once a knight is enough

Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighbouring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur’s youthful happiness. So he offered him freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer.

If, after a year, he still had no answer, he would be killed.

The question was: What do women really want?

Such a question would have perplexed even the most knowledgeable man, and, to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. Since it was better than death, however, he accepted the monarch’s proposition to have an answer by year’s end.

He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everybody; the princess, the prostitutes, priests, the wise men, and the court jester.

In all, he spoke with everyone but no one could give him a satisfactory answer.

What most people did tell him was to consult the old witch, as only she would know the answer. The price would be high as the witch was famous for the exorbitant prices she charged.

The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no alternative but to talk to the witch. She agreed to answer his question, but he’d have to accept her price; the old witch wanted to marry Gawain, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table and Arthur’s closest friend!

Young Arthur was horrified; she was hunchbacked and awfully hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like a sewer and often made obscene noises.

He had never run across such a

repugnant creature. He refused to force his friend to marry her and to have to endure such a burden. Gawain upon learning of the proposal spoke with Arthur. He told him that nothing was too big a sacrifice compared to Arthur’s life and the preservation of the Round table. Hence, their wedding was proclaimed, the witch answered Arthur’s question;

What a woman really wants is to be able to be in charge of her own life.

Everyone instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth and that Arthur’s life would be spared. And so it went. The neighbouring monarch spared Arthur’s life and granted him total freedom.

What a wedding Gawain and the witch had! Arthur was torn between relief and anguish. Gawain was proper as always, gentle and courteous. The old witch put her worst manners on display. She ate with her hands, belched and farted, and made everyone uncomfortable. The wedding night approached:

Gawain, steeling himself for a horrific night, entered the bedroom. What a sight awaited! The most beautiful woman he’d ever seen lay before him! Gawain was astounded and asked what had happened. The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she’d been a witch, half the time she would be her horrible, deformed self.

And the other half, she would be her beautiful maiden self. Which would he want her to be during the day and which during the night?

What a cruel question! Gawain began to think of his predicament; during the day a beautiful woman to show off to his friends, but at night, in the privacy of his home, an old spooky witch? Or would he prefer having by day a hideous witch, but by night a beautiful woman to enjoy many intimate moments?

What would you do? What Gawain chose follows below,

but don’t read until you’ve made your own choice… honesty pays, decide now.

Noble Gawain replied that he would let her choose for herself.

Upon hearing this, she announced that she would be beautiful all the time, because he had respected her and had let her be in charge of her own life.

What is the moral of the story? The moral is that it doesn’t matter

if a woman is pretty or ugly, smart or dumb.

Underneath it all, she’s still a witch!

Here at QPP we are always pleased to hear from you, our readers, and having received an email from Vincent of Speedprint it occurred to the editorial team that you too may have been asked some questions that bear no relevance to printing. So read on…

My printing shop based in Gants Hill, Ilford is celebrating 30 years in June, which I think is quite an achievement for a small, family run print shop. We have outlasted Kall Kwik and Prontaprint in this area and so wondered if you could give us a mention! You may like to include some “stupid

questions” that we have been asked by our discerning customers over the years... they include such gems as

“Do you sell cameras?”“Where is William Hill?”“What time does the Internet Café open?”“Do you ever need the services of a Japanese interpreter?”“Is there a builder’s merchants round here?” “Yes Arnolds up the road”

“Do they sell scrapers?”“So you don’t do international phone calls, then?”“Do you sell hinges?”“Do you sell cups?”

“How much are your Sofas?”“Do you re-ink Cartridges?” “No you need Cartridge World just over

there” “How much to they charge?”Kind regards,Vincent Goode, Speedprint, Gants Hill. Tel: 020 8518 6131Emal: [email protected] or visit: www.speedprint.co.uk
