Studying at Swinburne Sarawak is affordable as the fees are only a fraction of the cost of studying in Australia.

Better yet, degree students may go on exchange to our Australian campus for a year on Swinburne Sarawak tuition fees.

From its beginnings more than a hundred years ago, Swinburnehas grown to be one of Australia’s leading teaching and research universities.

While you can complete your studies entirely at Swinburne Sarawak, you may choose to transfer to one of our campuses in Melbourne to complete them as long as your results meet the requirements. Our programs and units of study are the same as those available at our campuses in Australia.

Our focus is on producing work-ready graduates. We maintain close relationships with industry partners to ensure our programs are in line with the future needs of industry, as well as to give you the opportunitiy to work on ‘real-life’ scenarios facing business and the community.

Degree students may spend a term or two at our Melbourne campus through our Student Exchange Program while paying Swinburne Sarawak tuition fees. The only cost you’ll need to bear in Australian currency is your living expenses. You may also go on exchange to any of our 50 partner institutions in Western Europe, North America, Scandinavia, Asia and the United Kingdom. Alternatively, you could complete part of your studies with our partner universities in Europe, North and South America as well as Asia through our Study Abroad Program.

Our academic staff are highly qualified and bring with them many years of industry experience in their respective field. Comprising Malaysians as well as a team of international staff, about 30 per cent hold PhDs (as of October 2011).

To prepare you for your professional life after university, our Professional Learning Model lets you learn by doing as you study for your degree. As a result, you’ll have strong career skills, the latest knowledge of your chosen profession and exposure to real-world scenarios.

Swinburne Sarawak

Firuz Zaripov, Uzbekistan Swinburne Foundation Studies (Engineering/Science)

“Foundation studies are different from school. At university, information is no longer given to us, we have to look for it ourselves. The one year at foundation helped us to adjust to university life and prepared us for the more challenging undergraduate study.”

A Swinburne education emphasises the development of the skills graduates need to gain employment with high salaries, or to go out and set up new ventures - new businesses - new companies, and consequently to end up employing others.”

Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive

Page 5: Quick Guide 2012 - Swinburne Sarawak

Our diploma programs provide a direct pathway to the second year of undergraduate studies at Swinburne Sarawak. You’ll experience smaller classes and have more time with your lecturers while studying units similar to the first year of a bachelor degree. Students who have completed a diploma program can also kick-start their career with this qualification. So, whether you want to join the workforce or pursue a degree program after diploma, it’s entirely up to you.

Foundation studies are designed to help you prepare, and meet the requirements, for undergraduate studies. During the one year you spend studying at foundation level, you’ll build up your skills and find out what you’re good at before you progress into the first year of a bachelor degree. With intakes in January, April and September and a range of programs in business, design, information technology/ multimedia and engineering/science, we’re certain you will find something that suits your personal interest and ambition.

Swinburne Sarawak is situated in Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak. Kuching has been described as one of the most liveable cities in Southeast Asia.

LiveWhere We“ ”

If we could pick one city for an enriching university experience, it’s got to be Kuching. And that’s exactly where you’ll be when you enrol at Swinburne Sarawak. Yes, it’s possible that we’re a little biased. But we’re sure you’ll agree, too. The first thing you’ll notice when you’re in the city is the relaxed atmosphere, clean environment, greenery and friendly people.

Swinburne Sarawak is only minutes from the city, where you’ll find a mix of historical charms and modern day architecture. Kuching has plenty to offer: a wide variety of food, shopping malls, entertainment centres, diverse culture, colourful festivals and natural wonders.

Its infrastructure for banking, communication, transportation and health care are well established too.

The entire city moves at a leisurely pace. There’s no rush. The crazed traffic, so common in big cities, is nowhere to be found.

Kuching is also the gateway to many other quaint and fascinating towns in Sarawak.

So, if you ask any of our more than 3,500 students, they’re sure to tell you there’s no place in the world they’d rather be.

Newly enrolled students looking to find off-campus accommodation are advised to lodge temporarily at budget hotels.

The rates for budget hotels range from RM50 per night for a bed and breakfast set-up, to about RM150 per night.

Contact the Business Development and Communications Unit at Swinburne Sarawak for information on such hotels.

The cost of living in Kuching is affordable, even for a student. As a guide, you could expect a monthly expenditure of between RM1,200 and RM1,800. This depends entirely on your lifestyle, of course.

The best way to get in on the action at Swinburne Sarawak is to live on campus - where it all happens. First year students get priority to live on the two hostel blocks. These are within walking distance to classes.

The hostels house more than 400 residents, so you’ll get to meet students from all over the world.

The hostels are separated into male and female blocks. You may choose a single or twin-sharing room but whatever your choice, the rooms are furnished with a bed, study table, chair and wardrobe. Wall fans are a standard feature although you may opt for a room with air-conditioning. Cafeterias, a bookstore, and ATM machine are only a stone’s throw away. Each hostel block is under the care of a university staff, ensuring that the welfare and interests of the residents are looked into. Guards provide 24-hour security. Living on campus is the best way to enrich your university experience.
