This program/course guide has been designed to assist you in finding details about the programs available at the Sarawak branch campus that include Diploma, Foundation, Degree, Masters and Doctoral/PhD programs. We offer you a choice of either completing your program locally with us at the Sarawak campus or at one of the campuses in Melbourne, Australia. Since the programs and units of study are the same, if your results meet the requirements you are able to transfer to or from Australia/Malaysia at the end of any term- subject to obtaining the appropriate visa from the relevant government.

The Branch Campus University in Sarawak is a partnership between Swinburne University of Technology in Australia and the State Government of Sarawak, operating through two foundations, Yayasan Sarawak (Sarawak Foundation) and the Sarawak Higher Education Foundation. Currently students from 51 countries as well as from West and East Malaysia study here.

The programs offered at Swinburne are designed to prepare graduates to live and work in a world in which professionals need to be capable of very high levels of proficiency and to be able to act on both a local and an international level. About Kuching

Your community

Swinburne’s Sarawak campus is situated in Kuching. The capital city of the state of Sarawak, Kuching has been described as one of the most liveable and attractive cities in the region.

Home to over 600,000 people, one thing most visitors notice about Kuching is its greenery and clean environment. This is not surprising as it is modelled as a garden city.

Getting around is easy as most places of iinterest are located close to each other. Some are within walking distance of one another. Public transport is easily available. Taxis, only a phone call away, can be found throughout the city.

There are many places for shopping, dining and entertainment. For instance, a large shopping mall is only 10 minutes’ walk from Swinburne Sarawak, and is a popular haunt among students.

There is a good choice of coffee bars, restaurants and cafes serving local as well as Western and other Asian cuisines. Cineplexes show the latest Hollywood hits while lounge bars are common place.

About an hour from the city are attractive beaches with hotels and resorts offering packages from five star to those that meet the needs of the budget traveller. A number of national parks are also within easy reach of the city, making day trips possible.

Exploring Malaysia

Malaysia is a multicultural country of about 28 million people. With well-established infrastructure for banking, communication, transportation and education, it is one of the more developed countries in Southeast Asia.

Well linked to the rest of the world, the country is geographically divided into Peninsular Malaysia, located on the Malay Peninsula, and Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Malaysia is a melting pot of colourful cultures and is made up of a good mix of Malays, Chinese, Indians and other ethnic and indigenous groups. While Malay is the national language, English is widely spoken.

The culinary scene is varied and colourful as a result of the diverse cultures. You’ll find Asian and Western cafes and restaurants aplenty. Eating out is widely popular and affordable.

As the weather is hot and humid most of the year relaxed, comfortable clothing is recommended. However from around November to March, the Monsoons bring much rain to the country and is commonly known as the ‘wet season’.

At Swinburne Sarawak, assessment takes various forms. You could be assessed through a combination of assignments, reports, examinations, practical, class presentations, journal keeping, class participation and group projects.

During your program, you’ll work to real-world expectations. All of our programs have work-based elements, which can include projects and work scenarios to ensure you are work ready. The skills you learn are directly relevant to performing tasks in the workplace.

Our teaching staff uses a number of innovative methods to promote understanding of your chosen area of study.

Modes of study

You will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of modes of study depending on your chosen program, and whether you are studying foundation, diploma or an undergraduate degree. These may include lectures, workshops, tutorials, laboratory sessions, group work, cross-discipline projects, case studies, practical sessions, discussion groups and individual research projects.

Majors

Most three-year degrees at Swinburne comprise 24 units of study. You undertake the majority of these units in your primary area of study, which becomes your major. Your major allows you to broaden your knowledge in a particular area. For example, if you undertake a Bachelor of Commerce, you can major in accounting and finance, human resource management, international business, marketing or management. Minors

A minor is a set of subjects (shorter than a major) studied throughout a degree. The number of subjects in a minor may vary between programs. Studying a minor will allow you to expand your career options by adding another area of expertise. You can also add depth to your qualification by studying units related to your major. For example, with a Bachelor of Commerce, you could major in management and undertake a minor in marketing, media or psychology.

The remaining units that make up your degree are called elective units, which you can use to explore related or non-related areas of interest. Depending on your program structure and timetable availability, you may be able to use these units to complete a double major, a major and a minor, or a major with two minors. 10 units of study in a calendar year for undergraduate programs

The Swinburne Sarawak academic calendar consists of two long terms of 12 contact weeks each and a short term of six contact weeks. You may choose to commence your study at any of the terms in February or September. Please note that some programs may not be offered at these terms.

Degree students are able to take up to 10 units of study in a full-load academic year, compared to eight in a conventional two-term academic year. The University also gives you the flexibility to tailor your study load in each term according to your personal ambition and abilities.

The number of units of study and the credit hours you are required to complete in the respective programs remains the same as those offered by Swinburne Australia. Careers in the Curriculum

Careers in the Curriculum is a not-for-credit unit of study that helps you develop career planning and management skills. You will develop a personal study and career plan and explore available job options, while also getting invaluable practical advice on job applications, résumé preparation and interviews. Foundation studies and diplomas are designed to prepare you for direct entry to a bachelor degree at Swinburne Sarawak. You’ll enjoy smaller classes, more contact hours and one-on-one time with your lecturers, giving you every opportunity to succeed in your university studies.

Foundation Studies

Foundation studies is specifically designed for students to help you prepare – and meet the entry requirements – for bachelor degree studies. It gives you a chance to build up your skills and find out what you’re good at even before you have begun your university studies.

The scheduled program contact hours in Swinburne Sarawak’s Foundation programs are made up of the classes students are required to attend and their examinations.

We have Foundation Studies programs in business, design, information technology/ multimedia and engineering/science. Once you have successfully completed Foundation Studies, you can progress directly into the first year of a bachelor degree.

There are three intakes for foundation programs. These are in January, April and September.

Diplomas

Diplomas provide a direct pathway to the second year of a bachelor degree at Swinburne Sarawak. The units are similar to first year of a bachelor degree, but classes are smaller and you have more time with your lecturers to help you adjust.

Swinburne offers diplomas in business and engineering.

While the diploma programs are designed as an alternative pathway for entry into Swinburne Sarawak’s undergraduate programs, they are also recognised as a qualification for career advancement. Students who have completed the diploma program can opt to start a career in the industry with this qualification.

English language programs

to help you improve your English language, swinburne sarawak offers you a range of English programs.

The university determines whether you need to enrol on an English program on the basis of your existing English language qualifications, e.g. an up-to-date IELTS band, the English Placement Test of the School of Language and Foundation.

Programs

The objective of Swinburne Sarawak’s English programs is to provide you with English support to enable you to cope better with your program of studies. We have two types of English language programs: intensive and supplementary. The Swinburne Sarawak English Placement Test determines which English program will benefit you most. The Intensive English program runs in the months before your diploma, foundation or degree program, whereas the Supplementary English programs run during your main program.

intensive English Program This program is divided into Basic Intensive English (BIE); Intermediate Intensive English (IIE) and Upper Intermediate Intensive English (UIIE) and is designed to give you maximum interactive learning practice in listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar.

Each level runs for 10 weeks and comprises 200 hours of learning in the classroom, language laboratory and library. It covers General English and English for Academic Purposes. Students have to pass a level to move on to the next level.

The Upper Intermediate Intensive English (UIIE) includes two hours of IELTS training per week for students who wish to take the IELTS test.

supplementary English Program for foundation students – English Proficiency English Proficiency is a pre-requisite program you must pass to complete your studies successfully. On passing English Proficiency, you may still be required to study Supplementary English in your diploma or degree program.

The program is five hours per week for 13 weeks, totalling 65 class hours. The program teaches General English and it focuses on sentence level grammar, short pieces of writing and oral presentation skills. supplementary English Program for diploma and degree students

The Supplementary English Program is required if you do not meet the university’s English requirements for your program of study. You must pass your Supplementary English modules in order to graduate.

We offer Supplementary English in three modules: Reading for Academic Purposes, Academic Writing, and Listening and Speaking. The Supplementary English modules cannot be taken at the same time; only one module can be taken in a single semester. Each module is four hours a week for 12 weeks i.e. 48 hours in all. These modules should be taken in the first and second year of the main program.

academic Writing module This module is designed to help you improve your academic writing skills to enable you to write your diploma or degree assignments in clear, correct and coherent English.

Study Abroad & Exchange programs

Students joining the Study Abroad and Exchange program at Swinburne Sarawak can spend one or two terms at the university and may begin their studies in either Term 1 or Term 2.

The 12-week program requires you to take a full-time study load which is 50 credit points or 30 ECTS per term. As most Swinburne subjects are 12.5 credit points, you will generally take four subjects in a term.

During your term at Swinburne Sarawak, you will have the opportunity to integrate into the local community and learn about its culture and lifestyle, while completing your studies.

Living and learning environment

Kuching is a modern city with excellent infrastructure and facilities such as banking, telecommunication, and transportation. The relaxed lifestyle makes the city a pleasant destination for tertiary education.

Orientation will be held for all students. This is to equip you with all the information for a successful Study Abroad and Exchange experience. The orientation program is designed to provide you with an academic, social and cultural introduction to life at Swinburne and in Sarawak.

teaching style

Classroom teaching will utilise applied commercial examples relevant to the Asian region. Lectures are held weekly and students are given an overview of the week’s materials. Tutorials are an opportunity for students to meet in smaller groups to discuss lecture materials. Laboratory sessions are held for some subjects to enable students to gain practical knowledge of their academic area.

Housing and residential services The Student Services section will be able to provide information and advice to students looking for affordable and secure accommodation, whether on or off campus.

counselling Swinburne students can access free counselling for any study, work, personal or relationship issues they are experiencing.

scholarship and financial assistance Swinburne Sarawak awards students who excel academically and those who display good leadership skills, with scholarship each term.

student council The Swinburne Sarawak Student Council helps new students adjust to university life through its orientation programs and other annual activities. Two fully furnished on-campus hostels, separated into male and female blocks, accommodate more than 400 students.

Rooms are available for single occupancy or twin-sharing. Furnishings include a bed, study table, chair and wardrobe. Wall fans are a standard feature while selected units are equipped with air-conditioning.

Besides Wi-Fi access, amenities include common reading/visitor areas, kitchen and dining rooms as well as laundry and drying areas.

Security is provided 24 hours a day and university staff look into the needs of each hostel block. To reserve a room, a booking fee is required. Payment of rental is to be made in full for each term.

First-year students are given priority for on-campus accommodation. After one year of residence, students are required to vacate the hostels although requests to stay on may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

off-campus accommodation

The Tabuan Plaza off-campus apartments are located within a reasonable distance from the campus.

The apartment units are equipped with security access terminal for the safety of its tenant. Each room is furnished with a single bed, study table and chair, wardrobe, fan and curtains. Students share a common area, kitchen and two bathrooms. The apartment comes with a dining set and refrigerator.

Rental is between RM270.00 and RM450.00 per month and includes utilities.

Private rental and share accommodation

You may choose to rent an apartment on your own or rent a house or apartment with other students. If you require such accommodation you are advised to contact the university. A data base of these accommodation may be obtained from Student Services. Viewing of the premises can be arranged.

You are advised to consider a short-term lodging option when you first arrive and then look for a place after you are more settled.

For private rental, the student is normally required to sign a tenancy agreement with the landlord.

Diploma of Engineering is a 3-year program that leads to 2 different engineering discipline specializations – Civil and Mechanical. Each discipline is further divided into the academic and vocational streams. Biotechnology is the applied science of using living organisms and their by-products for commercial development. Everyday items such as milk, beer, antibiotics, biodegradable plastics and biofuels are all biotechnology commodities. Many biotechnologists work with recombinant DNA, cell fusion, bio-processing techniques and environmental management. In this program you will examine the fundamental sciences that underpin biotechnology – chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and statistics – while investigating the application of biotechnology to areas such as business, ethics and environmental science. This professional major also provides flexible options that allow you to take major studies in chemistry, environmental science or other areas by negotiation

Major study areas

The biotechnology degree comprises a major (16 units) in biotechnology and you will then choose from a range of minors (four units each) that will add depth or breadth to your degree to make up the 24 units of the degree.
