Chris Bergmann's first sea-
son at the helm of the
VMI Keydet women's soc-
cer program, the 2015 campaign, was a strong one. Bergmann's
proteges won the program's most games since 2009 and also
advanced out of the first round of the conference tournament
for the first time since that same season. The squad also low-
ered its goals allowed mark by 21 and goalkeeper Darien
Dunham finished in the top-10 in Division I in total saves.
Bergmann was named the third head coach in VMI women's
soccer history on Dec. 12, 2014.
Bergmann came to VMI after six years as the head coach at
Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill. There, he coached the
school's men's team to back to back conference championships
in 2012 and 2013 and earned Midwest Conference Coach of the
Year honors both years. After the second of those champi-
onships, he took his team to the NCAA Division III Tournament
for the first time since 1981.
Bergmann coached eight NSCAA North All-Region players
at Lake Forest including Mahir Mameledzija, three-time confer-
ence player of the year and the 2012-13 CoSIDA Capital One
Academic All-American of the Year.
Also at Lake Forest, Bergmann served as the Athletic
Department Liaison to the Career Advancement Center, where
he created The Forester Game Plan, a personalized mentoring
program for the student-athletes at Lake Forest College.
Prior to working at Lake Forest, Bergmann was an assistant
coach for the women's program at Northwestern University for
the 2008 season, where he helped the team to a quarterfinal
berth in the Big 10 Tournament.
Bergmann spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons in Deerfield,
Ill., working as the head men's coach at Trinity International
University. There, he was responsible for all facets of the pro-
gram and saw his team get votes in both the 2006 and 2007
NSCAA and NAIA national polls, reaching as high as 23rd over-
all in the '06 campaign. He also served as the Athletic
Advancement Liaison at Trinity, where he was responsible for
meeting with the school's advancement team to develop various
fundraising concept to enhance athletic programs.
Bergmann got his start in the college ranks at Hope
International University in Fullerton, Calif., where he served as
men's coach during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He was the
2005 NCCAA West Region Coach of the Year, as he guided his
team to a seven-win improvement and a fourth-place finish at
the national tournament. His squad finished that season ranked
ninth in the country at the NCCAA level, all while Bergmann
served as an Assistant AD and an adjunct professor in the kine-
siology department.
Prior to college coaching, Bergmann spent several years
with the United Soccer League's Chicago Eagles Select Premier
Development League (PDL) team, serving as the general manag-
er, and was also involved with the Southern California Seahorses
PDL team.
Over the past four-plus years, the new Keydet coach has
served as the Director of Coaching for the Lincolnshire
Lightning Soccer Club, where he was responsible for all facets of
the day to day operations for the U8-U18 travel team. He has
also served in the club ranks for Pegasus, Lindenhurst Soccer
Club, the Chicago Eagles club team, Kopion F.C. and the SURF
Soccer Club, along with the Southern California Development
Program.
Away from the field, Bergmann and his wife Kelly founded
AIM Academic Mentoring Services, an academic support service
focusing primarily on middle and high school-aged students. The
couple has two children, Aidan and Mackenzie.

Keydets advanced out of the first round of a conference tourna-
ment for the first time since 2009.
Haught-Thompson came to VMI from the Lake Forest,
Ill. school where he served as the top assistant to Keydet head
coach Chris Bergmann for three seasons. Haught-Thompson

tournament title while coaching an NSCAA All-American and
Capital One Division III Player of the Year. He also served as an

Bergmann spent six seasons on the Lake Forest staff, working with the
men's soccer program in 2009 and from 2011-2014.

time on staff. The 2013 team finished with a 14-7-0 overall record and

Key Games: August 29, 2003 vs. Bridgewater - Colleen Redmond scores the first goal in VMI women’s soccer history, and the Keydets go on to win
their opener, 4-0 over Bridgewater at Patchin Field.
Sept. 11, 2005 at Youngstown State - The Keydets shut out the Penguins 2-0 in Youngstown, Ohio and defeat their first D-I opponent in
program history. VMI then goes on to win three of its next four games, including a record-breaking 13-0 win over West Virginia Tech on
Sept. 15. In that game, Alexa Bernas had 11 points and numerous other match records were set.
Sept. 24, 2008 vs. Liberty - Two goals in the opening 7:14 of the second half push the Keydets to their first win over an in-state Division I
opponent, as VMI knocks off Liberty for the first time ever.
Oct. 1, 2008 vs. Winthrop - The Keydets shut out Winthrop 3-0 at Patchin Field, earning the first three-match winning streak in program
history. The win was also VMI’s third-consecutive clean sheet, and was part of a 325:50 scoreless streak, a record that still stands today.
Nov. 6, 2008 vs. Winthrop - Playing Winthrop for the second time in six weeks, the Keydets fell behind in the fifth minute of the Big
South Tournament’s opening round. Just six minutes later, freshman Gabby McCarron scored her first career goal, a header off a Megan
Strand pass, and the Keydets added a 35th-minute score en route to the program’s first-ever postseason win, a 2-1 triumph.
Sept. 26, 2014 at The Citadel - Playing in their first-ever SoCon game, the Keydets get three points from senior Nicole Blixt to defeat
The Citadel 3-2 in Charleston.
August 25, 2016 vs. Hampton - Playing against a first-year Hampton program, VMI sets new SoCon records for goals, assists and points in
a 16-0 win. The team’s 46 points was, at the time, the 17th-highest single-game total in D1 history.
