YOUNG DEACONS.SEEK IMPROVEMENT, MORE WINS IN SECOND SEASON UNDER JIM CALDWELL

A s Wake Forest's second year head coach Jim Caldwell approaches the 1994 season, he knows

that his program has enough talented veterans and up-and-coming young players to be much more competitive than last year's 2-9 overall record and 1-7 ACC mark might imply. Caldwell also knows, however, that improve ment in one important area must be made first-and that began during this spring' s offseason drills.

"The major emphasis for our team this spring was improving our over all toughness," Caldwell, who came to Wake Forest last year after seven years on Joe Paterno's Penn State staff, says. "We simply need to be a more physi-

"At the same time, of course, we must continue to improve the preci sion and effectiveness in all phases of our operation. This time last year we were still introducing a new system and new terminology. This year a lot of things were already in place. Ev eryone was more familiar with each other which allowed us to increase our overall productivity."

The Demon Deacons return 34 lettermen from a 1993 team that seemed poised for a very successful season after a midseason win at Clemson, the first for Wake Forest in famed Death Valley since 1961, but the Deacs lost their last five games-four of which they led in the second half.

The 1994 good news begins on de-

"We have made considerable im provement physically from where we were this time last year, but we still have a ways to go. We just have to keep raising our standards. 2

fense, where eight starters return, led by all-star candidate KEVIN GILES (6'2,226,Sr), the team's leading tackler the past two seasons from his inside linebacker position. Giles totaled 124 stops on the 1992 Independence Bowl champion Wake team, then made 109 hits last fall (5th-best in the ACC).

"Kevin had a very good spring," Caldwell says. "He did not miss a practice and became much more of a

leader on our defensive unit. We ex pect him to have an outstanding year."

Another key returnee at linebacker is TUCKER GRACE (6'2,224,Jr), whose 83 tackles in 1993 ranked be hind only Giles on the WFU chart. Grace missed spring drills, however, while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery but he is expected to be at full speed for preseason practice. With him sidelined, veteran MIKE NEUBEISER (6'2,220,Sr) stepped for ward and turned in an excellent spring. In fact, he was named the de fensive unit's recipient of the '94 "Beattie Feathers Award" for his effort and improvement.

JONES HOLCOMB (6'1,210,Jr) fol lows Giles on the depth chart and should also see plenty of playing time this fall.

The Deacon secondary should be much-improved with eight lettermen back, including Freshman All America cornerback TOM STUETZER (5'11,190,So), who led the team with 4 interceptions and also was a member of the ACC All-Academic first-team last year. Stuetzer played exclusively at cornerback in '93 but could take his talents to free safety this year.

Two other returning starters in the defensive backfield are corner BRENT MOREHEAD (6'1,198,Jr) and senior rover RICHARD GOODPASTURE (5'11,187). Morehead is perhaps the best all-around athlete of the return ing Deacs in the secondary, while Goodpasture is a three-year veteran who provides leadership along with an aggressive style of play.

MAJOR GRIFFEY (6'0,170,So), who saw quite a bit of action a year ago, is a probable first-string cornerback if Stuetzer's move to safety works out. Another talented young player, TERRENCE SUBER (5'10,175,So), is back after starting the last three games of 1993 at free safety, as is ALEXIS SOCKWELL (6'2,182,Jr), a two-year letterman. TIM HAILSTOCK (5'9,186,Sr) also provides experience at corner but must bounce back from shoulder problems during the spring.

Elsewhere on defense, some famil-

iar names still are prominent on the depth chart, though offseason changes now have them at different spots.

Starting "Demon" linebacker JIMMY QUANDER (6'4,232,Sr) is listed as a starter at end entering pre season practice with youngster ROB ERT FATZINGER (6' 4,238,rFr) as his backup. Quander' s switch in position allowed end HAROLD GRAGG ( 6' 4,256,So ), who started six times last fall, to move inside to one of the tackle spots.

Replacing Quander at "Demon" is veteran MAURICE GRAVELY (6'4,210,Sr), an individual with big play potential and the skills to be an impact performer this fall. Behind him is former defensive back LaDWAUN HARRISON (6'0,208,So).

Last season's other returning starter at end, SEMMAJH TAYLOR (6'2,272,Sr), has added 15 pounds to his frame and moved to an inside

(tackle) slot where he'll help to fill a major void created by the loss of 1993 seniors Dred Booe (76 tackles & a lst team All-A CC pick) and Jay Williams (57 tackles). Youngsters STEVE VAUGHAN (6'5,274,So), ANDRE MASON (6'3,288,Jr) and JEROME SIMPKINS (6'3,254,So) could also be key contributors at the tackle posi tions.

On offense, the interior line should be a major "plus" for the Deacs even though three projected starters are sophomores. Eight of last year's top 10 players return, led by standout tackle ELTON NDOMA-OGAR (6'3,284,Jr) and center EDDIE McKEEL (6'2,270,Sr), both who will be third-year starters in '94. Ndoma Ogar and McKee! both started for the first time at Florida State in 1992-and neither has been out of the lineup since, a streak that has now reached 21 consecutive starts in a row (longest on the team).

Right guard TONY YARNALL (6'4,273,So) opened the final six out ings last fall, while tackle DOUG MARSIGLI (6'5,270,So) played along side him in 1994's last three contests. The third probable sophomore starter in the offensive front is BILL LEEDER (6'3,279,So), who was listed as the other first-string guard after spring drills.

Depth in the offensive line is a con cern. Not a single second-string

player has earned a varsity letter at this point.in their career, but individu als such as BO LOY (6'2,245,So), TIM GOODSON (6'5,285,rFr) and GREG McCRACKEN (6' 4,250,Jr) are cer tainly capable and ready to contribute.

Calling the signals behind the line will likely be RUSTY LARUE (6'2,194,Jr), who spent a busy winter as a key backcourt reserve on Wake Forest's basketball team. LaRue started five times at quarterback last season, sharing that duty with senior Jim Kemp. He completed 55.4% of his passes (67-for-121) for 854 yards but just one touchdown with five intercep tions. LaRue' s best efforts came in November when he completed 19 of 32 passes as the first-string quarter back against Georgia Tech and Mary land.

Running number-two at quarter back following the spring is youngster DAVID CERCHIO (6'4,206,Fr), a gifted young player who spent last season as a redshirt. Last year's third string signal-caller, ADAM DOLDER (6'2,185,Sr) has joined the receiving corps, where some major restructur ing is needed with the loss ·of wideout Todd Dixon, the second-leading pass receiver in school history (2,466 yards & 24 TDs ), and talented tight end Walter Rasby.

Two individuals to watch are split end ROGER PETTUS (6'0,190,Sr), the top returning receiver with 30 catches

The Deacons will definitely be re- 2 8

lying on new personnel in the kicking game with the departure of Mike Green, who handled the punting and placekicking duties the past two years. BILL HOLLOWS (6'1,213,So), last year's kickoff specialist, is the only placekicking candidate with any game experience. REID SIGMON (5'9, 183,So) challenged him for the those duties during the spring.

CHRIS WILSON (6'0,207,Sr) is the only returning punter on the roster, so there will likely be competition for that duty, as well as for the placekicking position, from this year's recruiting class.

The 1994 ;chedule for Wake Forest features only one new opponent, Army, which will be the annual "Homecoming" foe on October 1st. Vanderbilt and rival Appalachian State provide the other non-confer ence opposition.

The Deacons' home ACC slate should be particularly attractive to their Winston-Salem area fans. Three of last year's top four league teams will appear in Groves Stadium in '94, including defending national champ Florida State which will be making its first visit as anACC school to the WFU turf.

The leader of the Demon Deacon receiv ers is Roger Pettus, who caught 30 passes in 1993.

L ook for this experienced Deacon to challenge for one of the two starting tackle positions made available by the departure of last year's senior duo of Dred Booe and

Jay Williams ... took the first step in that direction by staying healthy throughout spring drills and proving himself to the current coaching staff moreso than ever before ... is listed as the top backup at one tackle slot behind Semrnajh Taylor as preseason practice opens ... served in a reserve role on 1992' s Independence Bowl champion team, earning a letter by taking part in seven contests ... did not play enough last fall to repeat that accomplishment, however ... was redshirted in 1991 ... possesses the size and strength to become a quality lineman and could very well have the opportunity to prove that to Dea con fans this season.

1993: On the field for 43 plays in season-opener against Vanderbilt, but an ankle injury then kept him sidelined the fol lowing three games ... returned to play at North Carolina (29 snaps) and made two unassisted stops, but the game at Florida State marked his only other substantial time the rest of the year.

BACKGROUND: Recorded impressive numbers during his career at Lakeland High ... totaled more than 100 tackles as a linebacker as a sophomore, junior and senior ... earned all-state and city player-of-the-year honors in 1990 under coach Edward Smithers ... rated by the Roanoke Times as one of the top 30 players in the state of Virginia ... made 153 tackles in 1990, including an incredible single game high of 30 versus Southampton High ... also excelled on the baseball diamond as a catcher, lettering four years and achieving all-state honors as a senior ... cousin Tony Massenburg was a standout basket ball player at Maryland ... majoring in speech/ communica tion ... age 21 (1/31/73).

A fter three years of learning, growing and improving, this Deacon lineman could make a solid contribution in 1994 ... corning off an excellent spring practice,

termed by the coaching staff as perhaps the best 15 days of his career, and should now contend for a top reserve spot and play ing time ... will begin preseason practice listed as a backup right guard behind'returning starter Tony Yarnall, though could possibly help out at either guard slot if needed ... has also worked some at center earlier in his career ... only negative aspect of his 1994 spring was that he had to undergo shoulder surgery that prevented him from making a strong finish to the offseason period ... should be ready to report at full speed for the beginning of practice in August, however ... the first few weeks of the '94 preparations will be very important as he strives to solidify his position on the depth chart.

BACKGROUND: Earned numerous honors both athleti cally and academically at Tuscola High ... the starting center in the 1990 Shrine Bowl ... selected for the 1991 East-West all star contest but had to miss that because of injury ... served as captain of his football squad as a senior while earning all-west ern North Carolina honors under coach Doug Brooks ... was honorable mention all-state as well ... standout in field events for the track squad, lettering two years and being named team MVP as a junior ... gained recognition for his classroom work, too, earning membership in the National Honor Society ... ac tive in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the History Club ... a health/sports science major ... age 21 (12/13/72).
