Principles of Operation

Along with its graphical userinterface of the CT3000 comesstate-of-the-art hardware,including EDAX multi-channel

analyzer and its uniqueanalytical firmware.

The CT3000 can be used inthree modes— “Match”,“Sort” and “Chemistry” .

In “Match” mode, the usermay choose representativesamples, shoot in “Chemistry”mode and store the assays tobuild a custom library. The userthen proceeds to shootunknown samples and theinstrument will then display agreen light when the unknownsample matches one of thestored library within 95% ofthe known sample.

In “Sort” mode, theinstrument will sort samplesagainst its stored library ofalloys chemistries and providesimmediate results, bothqualitative and quantitative inwt%. The data is then alsostored on the instrument (upto 7000 spectra) and can bedownloaded via serial port to aPC for further analysis orpermanent storage.

XRF is capable ofdetecting all of the elementspresent above atomic number14 (Sulfur) in the periodictable, in concentrationsranging from 100% down toless than 0.1wt%. The samplesmay be in solid, powder orliquid form. Because it is

insensitive to the chemicalform in which the elements arepresent, x-ray fluorescencespectrometry gives resultsdirectly in elementalcomposition. Alloy chemistrycan be quickly determinedwith energy dispersive x-rayfluorescence spectrometry(EDXRF). Awkward liquidNitrogen dewars are no longerrequired with the new peltiercooled Si PIN detectors.Similarly, little or no samplepreparation is necessary,resulting in rapid sorting orchemistry on-line analysis.
