Questions and answers to WCDMA RNP course

Questions and answers to WCDMA Radio Network Planning course

Q:Why the less multipath diversity that is available, the larger is the macro diversity gain?

A:

Q:Why a better gain is achieved with the softer handover than with the soft handover?

A:The difference in gains achieved for the two kinds of handovers is about 0.9 to 1.3dB. In the softer handover the uplink transmission signal from the mobile station is detected by two sectors of one base station. The signals from two sectors are maximal ratio combined in the base station baseband Rake receiver, while in the soft handover signal combining is done in RNC by selecting the better signal.

Q:How power differences between DPCCH and DPDCH is calculated/set?

A:The value of the power difference is quantised into four bits, i.e. 15 values for power differnces between 23.5dB and 0.0dB and one bit combination for no DPDCH when there is no data to be transmitted.

Q:How Eb/Eo is set for different conditions?

A:Eb/Eo is signal to interfere ratio required to decode signal successfully (with certain maximum FER). The value can be either measured or simulated for different bit rates and interfering conditions.

Q:What is ITU?

A:ITU stands for International Telecommunication Institute. The ITU (www.itu.int) headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland is an international organization within the United Nations System (www.unsystem.org) where governments and the private sector coordinate global telecom networks and services.

Q:What is RTT?

A:RTT stands for Radio Transmission Technology.

Q: What is ITU Pedestrian A (five-tap channel) and ITU Vehicular A (two tap channel)?
