HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT

PARTICULAR SOCIALGROUPS?

CLASS

Stereotypically hip hop culture is aimed at middle class people who are able to use their income on extra luxuries. With the price of £3.50 it meant that my magazine was affordable for this class. With other existing products costing around this price meant that my magazine was not inappropriately priced. Also, the article of my magazine does not contain too much or too little writing that only higher or lower class people would want to read. It has a article with a little informal and formal writing where middle class people will be able to understand both easily. so middle class people can relate to the type of text and wording used.

I tried to represent middle class people throughout the magazine but the golden pictures represented the class the most. I decided this as the colour scheme connotes a stylish and classy page.

Middle Class: Have a higher standard of education, more likely to be in work, more likely to own their own home, have a longer life expectancy, have families later, come from a stable family background, be white, more likely to be rich, less likely to be involved in crime, more likely to have an important job or manage people, more likely to work in an office.

CHARACTERS/AGE/GENDERAlthough the music genre is thought to be dominated by males. I chose to target both genders. I did this through photographs and the colour scheme, I used a range of colours to represent both genders. For example I used red a lot which both genders can appeal to.

I included two characters, a boy and a girl as the magazine is targeted at both genders. This was so for the male model males aspired to the model and females were attracted to the model. Same strategy for the female model on the contents page but reversed.

The targeted age group was 16-25. I thought it would be suitable if the models featured were this age also to reflect my audience. My models were 17 and represented the hip hop style and culture accordingly. In my contents I also included

information of other artists both female and male again to appeal to both genders . This was so there was not an unfair balance and I didn't loose one genders interest. Also my existing magazine research showed that the magazine Vibe had a close audience percentage of both male and females so I felt this was the way forward also targeting both genders.

REPRESENTATION OF MALE AND FEMALE

The location the model is stood in is an urban area representing how young boys go out in this area to socialise and feel free. The teenager is fully covered up wearing dark colours connoting power and strength males may aspire too and attract females. The worn cap and jumper is a particular hip hop outfit to demonstrate the fashion within the culture and show how the clothing is rather baggy and over seized. The graffiti in the background shows hip hop males are artistic and imaginative.

The wild hair almost afro like emphasis the appearance of the women and how proud they are of the features they have.Contrasting against the male hip hop character is the female, wearing little clothing to show off her assets. The baggy top and small shorts state how hip hop women are confident and enjoy showing their style. The strong position connotes the females are also strenuous physically and emotionally. I decided this as the position looks like a barrier of letting no bad in to the models life.

ETHNIC GROUPSWHO/WHY/HOW?

My product alongside other conventions of the same genre is traditionally aimed at US-born blacks however, other ethnic groups began to contribute to the development of the cultural movement, including White British. This is due to the lyrics within this genre being mainly English. As the magazine was produced in York it was difficult to find black models because the population is mainly white. I used tanned models with the style of the genre which I thought still looked suitable to represent the genre.

HOW ARE TEENAGERS REPRESENTED IN YOUR MAGAZINE

Article

Technology

Photographs

My article includes both informal and formal language for my target audience of mainly teenagers. In the present days teenagers are easily influenced by media and inspirational people. They choose to dress like them and speak like them. Teenagers rely on others until they find themselves so reading articles with the latest news is a way of becoming fashionable and in date. The informal language is a way of representing how teenagers are influenced to speak these days like the people they aspire to.

As technology is improving and developing a common symbol featured in many magazines nowadays is a QR code. As teenagers have the latest technology it allows them to understand these features and use them. So using these symbols in magazine represents teenagers and how the generation are comfortable with using them.

I chose to use a male model for my front cover this conveyed a typical teenagers style. I used an urban, artistic area to represent teenagers socialising in a place they are familiar with or a place where they feel comfortable and safe. The prop of the cigarette shows rebellion and trying new things.
