Q2 How does your media product represent particular social groups ?
+Age In terms of age, our on screen social group were
represented as a group of teenagers. The main character in our opening sequence is a young male aged 17. Young teenage characters are a typical convention of slasher films due to their vulnerability. Similar to ‘Scream’ our production portrays teenagers as being unsafe and helpless when they are alone.
+Gender As well as being represented as vulnerable, the two male
characters in our production are conveyed as being confrontational and aggressive. A link can be made between the male characters in the film ‘Kidult hood’ and our production as the males are also portrayed as being violent and delinquent . Our production is a representation of youth subculture.
HOODIES: Some teenage males have modeled their behavior on representations films like ‘Kidult hood’ promote, leading to
the raise of gang culture. Therefore hoodies have become a symbol of this
representation and the wearing of them and constant reinforcement of the
representation by the media has created a climate of fear surrounding one item of
clothing. two of our male characters in our opening are also wearing hoodies and their
use of colloquial language (slang) also conveys this culture.
+Gender There is only one female character in our media
production. The female character in our opening sequence is portrayed as timid and vulnerable as our main character shouts at her when saying “you aint my mum” which signifies how he over powers her and how he only thinks of her as a timid motherly figure. This makes our female character fit the convention of a horror slasher film as she’s victimized by the surroundings and is seen as almost a peace maker when the aggressive males break out in a fight.
