Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social

groups?

Narrative• Our narrative involves Alice, a 14 year old girl whose mother has just remarried.

She gets on very well with her step-sister Molly. When her mother finally allows her to create an iConnect account she is really happy. However, someone starts harassing her on the social networking site. The only person she confides to is Molly. But the harassing becomes worse. Alice has to decide whether she will do something about it or suffer in silence.

• The stereotypes used in the narrative is that both the protagonist and antagonist are female characters because a mainstream audience can identify with it due to females being seen as the ones who are bullied more than males are. This is shown through the film ‘Cyberbully’.

Protagonist- good teenager

Props were used which a stereotypical 14 year old girl would have to make it more realistic.

This shot shows her in her wearing her school uniform and the ‘Finding Nemo’ poster show her to be vulnerable.

There is bright lighting on Alice as she is the ‘good’ character in the film as she is innocent looking. She is a young teenager who is represented as being fragile.

Antagonist- wicked teenager

The antagonist is portrayed through low-key lighting and is shown to be wearing dark clothing. This is stereotypically how they are represented as it symbolises their ‘dark’ personality. This is contrasted with Alice’s shots as Molly is a conniving and evil teenager.

Likewise, in ‘Chatroom, the ‘evil’ teenager is portrayed in dark clothing and lighting.

Family

The first picture represents families to be all happy and loving on the outside. However, there are some conflicts or secrets between families which is shown in the second shot where the picture is out of focus.
