Apart from being famous for its pristine islands and beaches, Zambales has also proved that their mangoes are the sweetest in the country.
In celebration of the bountiful orchards teeming with sweet mangoes, the town of Iba in Zambales yearly holds an annual Mango Festival, a six-day event of thanksgiving for the abun-dant harvest of mangoes and all the other agricultural products of the province. This year the Festival is April 15-18.
There will competitions and events for the festival like Man-go Eating Challenge, Street Parade, Float Competition, Man-go-themed Street Dance, Trade Fair, and Variety Show. The festi-val also features booths showcasing the best of mango products of every town: dried mangoes, wines, tart, jam, candies and souvenir items.
Capping of the Mango Festival is the sand sculpturing competi-tion and lifesaving Mango Olympics in the serene beaches of the province, inter-town drum and lyre competition in the morning followed by astonishing performances various bands and groups in the evening.
Province officials headed by Gov. Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr is target-ing the festival to be a national event such as the Penagbenga of Baguio and the Ati-atihan of Ilo-ilo and Sinulog of Cebu.
“When you talk about the best mango in the world, you will surely think of our variety,” said Gov. Hermogenes Ebdane Jr.
He said fruit experts from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and Bureau of Plant Industry had considered Zambales’ Sweet Elena variety as the best carabao mango strain for commercialization.
More than 5000 tourists and visitors are expected to troop during the one week festival which will showcase talents from 13 towns that prepared for ‘Parayawan’–dressing their facade with ‘mango theme’ which will set the mood.

Fifteen entries varying from different countries and heritage - showcasing teams that rep-resented the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Malaysia, Australia and Great Britain - finished the gruelling race within two days. Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin 90,skippered by David Witt now holds the fastest time to cross the finish line, and notably their first time to compete in this race. To date, this race has been an achievement even for regular competi-tors who have recorded their fastest race times to Boracay. Sailing enthusiasts and Grand Prix race boats have been attracted to the challenges that these races bring. The shifting winds that sailors encounter in Subic Bay, as well as en route to the beautiful island of Boracay cause headaches for the unwary, opportunities for the crews.
“Over the years, we work tirelessly with our sailing partners toward opening more doors for occasions in spreading the spark of sailing and enliven big boat racing pursuits in the Philippines,” so said the SAGS Co-Chairman and The Lighthouse Marina Resort President, Jun Avecilla.
Stakes for these races are high as Capt. Marty Rijkuris, organizer of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Circuit (asianyachting.com), keeps score of the regattas that count towards the much coveted AY Skipper and Yacht of the Year. The race to Boracay and the Boracay Cup are two out of the twelve races which are conducted across South East Asia in Malaysia, Sin-gapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong that award points to the winners. The accolades are given at the end of the racing season in Koh Samui.
Truly, sailing is more fun in the Philippines.
