Celebrate the 1,500 year old tradition of Valentine’s Day with a Special Night OutValentine’s Day Done Right

The history of Valentine’s Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends. The holiday’s roots are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15. Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring Febru-ary 14 to be St. Valentine’s Day.Valentines Galore

Which St. Valentine this early pope intend-ed to honor remains a mystery: according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by that name. One was a priest in Rome, another a bishop in Ter-ni, and of a third St. Valentine almost nothing is known except that he met his end in Africa. Rather astonishingly, all three Valentines were said to have been martyred on Feb. 14.Most scholars believe that the St. Valentine of the holiday was a priest who attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II around 270. At this stage, the factual ends and the mythic begins. According to one legend,

Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors made better sol-diers. Valentine continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies but was eventually appre-hended by the Romans and put to death. Another legend has it that Valentine, impris-oned by Claudius, fell in love with the daugh-ter of his jailer. Before he was executed, he allegedly sent her a letter signed “from your Valentine.” Probably the most plausible story surround-ing St. Valentine is one not focused on Eros (passionate love) but on agape (Christian love): he was martyred for refusing to renounce his religion. In 1969, the Catholic Church revised its litur-gical calendar, removing the feast days of saints whose historical origins were questionable. St. Valentine was one of the casualties.Chaucer’s Love Birds

It was not until the 14th century that this Christian feast day became definitively associ-

ated with love. According to UCLA medieval scholar Henry Ansgar Kelly, author of Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine, it was Chaucer who first linked St. Valentine’s Day with romance. In 1381, Chaucer composed a poem in honor of the engagement between England’s Richard II and Anne of Bohemia. As was the poetic tradition, Chaucer associated the occasion with a feast day. In “The Parliament of Fowls,” the royal engagement, the mating season of birds, and St. Valentine’s Day are linked:

For this was on St. Valentine’s Day, When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate.

Tradition of Valentine’s Cards

Over the centuries, the holiday evolved, and by the 18th century, gift-giving and exchanging hand-made cards on Valentine’s Day had become common in England. Hand-made valentine cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts eventually spread to the American colonies. The tradition of Valentine’s cards did not become widespread in the United States, however, until the 1850s, when Esther A. Howland, a Mount Holyoke graduate and native of Worcester, Mass., began mass-producing them. Today, of course, the holiday has become a booming commercial success. According to the Greet-ing Card Association, 25% of all cards sent each year are valentines.

Why We Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Chocolates

Conversation hearts, truffles galore and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates—these are the sym-bols of Valentine’s Day for many lovers around the world. But why do we have a “sweets to the sweet” tradition every February 14? While the roots of Valentine’s Day go all the way back to Roman times, candy gift giving is a much more recent development. Is it because of chocolate’s reputed aphrodisiac qualities, or just a way for candy companies to sell more sweets in the lull between Christmas and Eas-ter? Whatever the reason, those ubiquitous little red boxes flood shelves every year, and this week we’re taking a look at the reasons why.The first mention of St. Valentine’s Day as a romantic holiday appeared in the writings of Chaucer in 1382. With the medieval period came a new focus on illicit but chaste courtly love, and it is here that we see some of the familiar iconography begin to appear. Knights would give roses to their maidens and celebrate their beauty in songs from afar. But sugar was still a precious commodity in Europe, so there was no talk of exchanging candy gifts.By the 1840s, the notion of Valentine’s Day as a holiday to celebrate romantic love had tak-en over most of the English-speaking world. It was Cupid’s golden age: The prudish Vic-torians adored the notion of courtly love and showered each other with elaborate cards and gifts.

Into this love-crazed fray came Richard Cad-bury, scion of a British chocolate manufactur-ing family and responsible for sales at a cru-cial point in his company’s history. Cadbury had recently improved its chocolate making technique so as to extract pure cocoa butter from whole beans, producing a more palatable drinking chocolate than most Britons had ever tasted. This process resulted in an excess amount of cocoa butter, which Cadbury used to produce many more varieties of what was then called “eating chocolate.” Richard recognized a great marketing opportunity for the new chocolates and started selling them in beautifully decorat-ed boxes that he himself designed. From that point, it was a quick jump to taking the familiar images of Cupids and roses and putting them on heart-shaped boxes. While Richard Cadbury didn’t actually patent the heart-shaped box, it’s widely believed that he was the first to produce one. Cadbury market-ed the boxes as having a dual purpose: When the chocolates had all been eaten, the box itself was so pretty that it could be used again and again to store mementos, from locks of hair to love letters. The boxes grew increas-ingly elaborate until the outbreak of World War II, when sugar was rationed and Valen-tine’s Day celebrations were scaled down. But Victorian-era Cadbury boxes still exist, and many are treasured family heirlooms or valu-able items prized by collectors.

The Mad Dog Motorcycle Club (MDMC) The MDMC is a close-knit brotherhood of bikers with a shared passion for riding big bikes together, preferably far and hard. Members are executives, businessmen and pro-fessionals from all over the world, who have one thing in common: each member has earned the priviledge of wearing the Mad Dog colors and club tattoo.

Membership in the MDMC is acquired after being invited to become a club “Prospect” , then completing a challenging “Prospectship” period of at least six months. A Mad Dog treasures his honor and integrity, and lives by the values of Freedom, Courage & Loyalty.

The MDMC is not meant for every biker, and not every biker is meant to become a Mad Dog.

As an Asia based MC with it’s Mother Chapter founded in the Philippines in 1994, MDMC has other Chapters located in Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong & China.

Mad Dogs, however, are not just bikers. They are also moved to “give forward”, to share, however modestly but from the heart, with other members of society, particularly disad-vantaged children who are especially helpless and vulnerable. MDMC’s Philippines Chapter has a Special Projects Chairman, Dave Pua, who has worked for many years in this volun-tary position, always leading the Club’s efforts and initiatives to help others.

Medical Missions MDMC in cooperation with Pugad Lawin sa Quirino sponsor an annual Medical Mission, which includes Operation Tule, Dental Extractions and Medical Screening for the elderly. Operation Tule, offers free circumcision to boys of primary age. To date, the project has ben-efited over 1,200 boys who were not only circumcised but were also given post-procedure medications. To date, this project has also resulted in over 1000 Tooth extractions that oth-erwise could have lead to more serious medical issues. The screening for the elderly includes cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, foot screening and general well being. Pugad Lawin sa Quirino are an invaluable partner who give their untiring support to the club’s civic missions.

For many years, MDMC has supported two orphanages, Duyan Ni Maria in Angeles City and Virlanie Foundation in Makati City. As well as the Kaibigan Ermita Outreach Foundation, Inc (KEOFI) in Manila, the lat-ter dedicated to the care of street children. MDMC involvemnet includes assistance for education and health.

Another initiative from the Special Projects of the Mad Dogs is to gather donations during times of crisis for example, follow-ing a Natural Disaster. Donations of ready to eat food, clothes and blankets, medicines and other vital supplies are collected and personally delivered to relief and evacuation centres.

The Mad Dogs have been operating the Proj-ect “Bomba Ng Tubig” for over three years. Bomba Ng Tubig is all about delivering pota-ble water to the poorest communities in the Central Provinces of Luzon. This is achieved through the installation of Deep Water Wells. These wells are installed on community land, so the entire community has free access to the water. To date, over 80 Deep Water Wells have been installed, providing potable water to over 800 families. The project involves working with local governments to find suit-able locations, procuring the materials then sub-contracting and supervising the installa-tion of the wells. Like all their projects, the Mad Dogs do not hand over the money and walk away, they make sure it happens!

The Mad Dogs have been a major part-ner with JeepneED, which is an ongoing education project, providing mobile IT-access and science materials to grade school and high school students in remote areas of the Philippines. The Mission of JeepneED is to make learning fun and relevant, and to bring science labs where there are none. MDMC pro-vided the initial mobile vehicle for this venture.

The Club accepts, through individuals in the Philippines and elsewhere, used PC’s and components out of which volunteer partners assemble functioning computer systems. These are donated to orphanges, and primary and sceondary schools, some in provinces where children have never seen a computer before. The hardware are used to introduce children to information technology .

How You Can Help

The Mad Dogs operate two major Charity Events each year, a Golf Tournament and a Motorcycle Poker Run sponsored by local corporations, small business operations, individuals and other or-ganizations. They are only possible thanks to the generosity of the Sponsors and the tireless work put in by the Special Projects Team of the Mad Dog Motorcycle Club Philippines. Mad Dogs warmly welcome cooperation and joint efforts with corporate and individual friends who want to reach out and help others. The MDMC ensures that contributions are provided to intended ben-eficiaries. Today’s experts spout off the latest statistics about long-term wealth, home values, and interest rates, yet there’s a much more sentimental side to homeownership. Owning a home allows you to put down roots, both figu-ratively and literally. On one hand you become part of a neighborhood and communi-ty. When you rent, neighbors come and go as quickly as leas-es renew. Homeowners, howev-er, tend to stay put longer.

What does this mean for you? You can develop lifelong relationships. This also means your home will see you through many of life’s important milestones. These little moments are what life is all about. Memories from Christmas morn-ings and summer vacations will fill minds for years to come. It makes sense. Many people enter the realm of homeownership as young cou-ples looking to build a nest. They plan on starting their own family and need room to expand and grow. These family homes will see many firsts and will be the venue of countless memories. Addition-ally, homeownership gives families more room to entertain and this means extended family will also share in building memories. It’s not just young families, though, that seek homeownership. Families with teenagers seek larg-er homes to room their growing brood. Retiring adults may wish to start a new phase and new memories, seeking out smaller, more manageable homes.

There is a certain pride that comes with home-ownership. This piece of property and land is yours. For the past two decades, Deca Homes has been refining its precast concrete construction meth-od for use in the Philippines. It’s house construction process uses precast con-crete that involves casting and curing reinforced concrete in a controlled environment, before

Page 39: Quest magazine - February 2015

31February 2015 transporting them to construction sites for lifting, assembly, and finishing. The whole process allows the construc-tion of housing units in just 8 to 10 days, compared to the traditional method of piling hollow blocks on top of each oth-er, which requires around 45-60 days. The concrete walls are cast in onsite fac-tories. Proper QC and QA protocols are applied and followed in every activity, to ensure quality in both aesthetics and structural integrity. The streamlined process allows different processes to be done simultaneously—while the concrete walls are curing, work already starts for the installation of foundation and ground slabs, where provisions for water and sanitary lines are already in place. After 24 hours, the load-bearing precast walls are placed in position via hydraulic cranes. Weld-ing, roof framing, and roof installation are also done on the same day.Work on plumbing and electrical fixtures, counters, and wall finish takes a bulk of the construc-tion time. Bathroom fixtures, electrical finishes, windows, and door knobs are usually installed before the sixth day ends. The last day is used for interior and exterior cleaning, as well as for any finishing touches that might be required.Aside from being considerably faster than conventional building methods, one of the advantages of Deca Homes’ precast building system is concrete strength. Compared to conventional hollow block walls that can withstand around 800 pounds of force per square inch (psi), precast walls are designed to withstand about 4,800 psi. With the systemic building and pricing strategies, the company has turned over more than 41,000 housing units to date. One of their newest developments is Deca Clark, only a 5 to 10 minutes drive to Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA), Duty Free shops, SM City
