A highlight of Queensland Government schooling is the excellent homestay and welfare arrangements.

The accommodation, care and welfare of our enrolled international students is the number one priority for Education Queensland International (EQI) and our schools.

International students enrolled in Queensland Government primary schools must live with a parent or close relative. International students enrolled in Queensland Government high schools (Years 7 to 12) may choose to live with a parent or close relative or apply to EQI for a homestay and welfare arrangements.

The minimum homestay age is 11 to allow for students to be placed in homestay starting from Year 7 (ages 11 to 12 during the junior high school year).*

Your family away from home

Homestay is for visiting students who want to experience the real-life Australian lifestyle by living with an Australian host family during their stay. Homestay gives visiting students the best opportunity to practise their English conversation skills in everyday life, while ensuring safe accommodation and a caring home environment. Visiting students often develop lasting friendships with their Australian host families.

All families have been carefully selected by the schools and assessed before being certified with a government-authorised working with children permit (Blue Card) in order to host international students.

Homestay includes:

›› three meals per day, seven days per week

›› student’s own bedroom with study facilities

›› assistance with transport to and from school.

Airport pick-up is provided free of charge to all international students arriving in Queensland for the first time.* Students enrolled in primary school must live with a parent or close relative.

›› Host families provide visiting students with three meals

Academies’ origins

On 17 April 2005, the Queensland Academies were created as an innovative alternative educational program for highly capable high school students.

The Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) at Toowong and the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries (QACI) at Kelvin Grove opened in January 2007 for Year 10 and Year 11 students.

The Queensland Academy for Health Sciences (QAHS) opened on the Gold Coast in January 2008 for students in Years 10 and 11. In July 2008, QACI officially opened its new purpose-built seven-storey facility in the heart of the Creative Industries precinct at Kelvin Grove.

What makes the Academies special

The Queensland Academies are state schools for highly capable Year 10 to 12 students.

A bridge between high school and tertiary study, the Academies are designed to maximise the potential of highly capable students and prepare them for university.

Studying with like-minded students

By challenging current approaches to teaching and learning, the Academies enable students to learn from and with each other. The Academies and the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum promote a sense of team in which students are not competing for a finite number of top scores.

Internationally recognised curriculum

The Queensland Academies offer the IB Diploma Program – an internationally recognised pre-university level qualification that allows subjects to be accelerated and graduating students to study at Australian tertiary institutes as well as overseas universities.

Preparation for university

The rigour of the IB curriculum with subjects such as the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (a research topic of the student’s choosing), coupled with the style of education, enables students to adjust more readily to university conditions.

Partnerships with universities

Partnerships with leading universities afford benefits including credit into second year university courses, attainment of additional tertiary rankings, industry experience, involvement with university staff and access to world-class resources and facilities.

Technology-rich environment

The new university-standard facilities at the Academies have full wireless connectivity which allows students to use laptop tablets, instead of traditional exercise books, for all subjects.

Stimulating, challenging environment

Highly capable students are stimulated with challenging extension and enhancement opportunities run with partner universities. They are challenged by an array of school-based extracurricular Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) activities.

The academy experience includes participation in camps, sports and music events, and milestone activities such as formals and graduation ceremonies.

The Queensland Academy for Creative Industries (QACI) benefits from a unique partnership between Education Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), in particular the dynamic and world-leading creative industries faculty.

In this partnership, the state’s most talented and high performing students will be able to access an articulated route to tertiary studies at QUT which will allow them an early, measured introduction to tertiary life that will better prepare them for what many young people consider to be the culture shock of the first year university experience

To obtain the benefits of powerful learning that can be achieved through the arts, the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries has developed a broad range of significant arts community and business relationships.

Students graduating from QACI are well placed for careers in architecture, engineering, town planning, event management and new media industries such as e-games, web development, software development and graphic design, as well as film, television, music, theatre and visual arts.

The Queensland Academy for Health Sciences’ (QAHS) learning community is a rich educational environment.Through its partnership with Griffith University, and the QAHS curriculum offerings, QAHS also affords credit options to students in areas that include business, law, engineering, arts, criminology, information technology, psychology, education and multimedia.

There is a strong underpinning focus on research. The two education providers are co-located at Southport which has provided the opportunity for development of a range of relationships both formal and informal. QAHS provides students with opportunities to pursue careers in the health sciences, sciences, academia or research.

Interested students may engage with Griffith University’s Health Certificate which is studied concurrently with the Diploma, and offers successful students a pathway directly to a range of second year Health degrees.

The Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) allows high achieving students to develop their skills through leading edge curriculum and links with The University of Queensland (UQ). Working in partnership with UQ, QASMT offers an enriched program to enhance the development of students who have an interest and ability in the related fields of science, mathematics and technology.

QASMT aims to develop students’ abilities to research, investigate and reflect on local and global matters. The relationship of the students and teachers is based on intellectual challenge and interdependent enquiry. Beyond this, QASMT encourages students to develop learning groups to accelerate their learning.

Students who graduate from QASMT will be well placed to take on careers in new science fields such as biotechnology and nanotechnology, as well as established fields like health sciences, engineering, chemical sciences, robotics and neuroscience.
