They came, they stood, theyconquered.

Under clear skies and dazzlingsunshine, 3,373 people turned outto Nixon Field on Sept. 6 to help

Queen’s University sethe Guinness World

Record for largest hu-man letter.

“I might have a sun-burn, but it was wortht,” said Jasper

Haighton, Sc’20, whoattended the event withother first-year studentsiving on her residence

floor. “It was kind ofcool to come together as a commu-nity and do something that will beremembered in history.”

Queen’s beat the previousrecord of 2,166 set earlier this yearby Dell Technologies in RoundRock, Texas. All of the participantswore gold T-shirts provided by theorganizers. The Q had a circumfer-ence of approximately 140 metres,with organizers mapping out theletter in advance using more than300 metres of rope.

“I’m thrilled we set the record,which was a fun and exciting wayto highlight our 175th anniversarycelebrations,” said Queen’s Princi-

unteers, more than 70 in total,who made this accomplishmentpossible.”

Manal Shalabi, a PhD candi-date in the Department of Chem-istry, was one of the volunteers for

the event. She answered questionsand helped get participants intoposition before the record at-tempt. Ms. Shalabi was joined byher friend Mariam El Mezouar, aPhD candidate in the School ofComputing.

“When are you going to havethe chance to do this again? Icouldn’t miss this opportunity,”Ms. El Mezouar said. “It’s so coolto be part of the Guinness record.”

The record attempt is a high-light of the university’s 175th an-niversary celebrations. Hundredsof incoming students helped fillup a large portion of the Q alongwith other students, faculty, staff,and local community members.

“This event is absolutely fan-tastic,” says Rector Cam Yung,Artsci’16. “It showcases the factthat the student experience is akey part of life at Queen’s. It’s ex-ceptional to see us come togetheras a group to celebrate Queen’s.”

Even international studentsjoined in the festivities. GianlucaIezzi, Roberta Luongo, FlaminiaAlbanese, and Luca Luciani, ex-change students from Luiss Uni-versity in Rome, heard about therecord attempt the day before.

“We knew we wanted to bepart of it,” Ms. Albanese said. “Itwas the best welcome to Queen’s.”

School of Policy Studies welcomes new fellowsBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

Some new and familiar faceswill be on Queen’s campus this fallto begin four fellowships withinthe School of Policy Studies.

“Our academic fellows enrichthe student learning experienceand raise our profile as an impor-tant contributor to public policydebate and development,” saysDavid Walker, Executive Director,School of Policy Studies. “The ap-pointees’ expertise and experiencewill continue to be a tremendousasset for the school.”

Jamshed Merchant, who hasbeen Canada’s consul general inMinneapolisfrom 2012 to2016, will joinSPS on an execu-tive interchangefrom Agricultureand Agri-FoodCanada. Mr. Merchant has servedin both academic and public serv-ice roles during his 37-year career.After starting out as a universitylecturer, he served as a soil scien-tist and soil conservationist fornearly 20 years. He joined the

Treasury Board of Canada Secre-tariat in 2003 before returning toAgriculture and Agri-FoodCanada in 2007. He was ap-pointed assistant deputy ministerof the Agri-Environment ServicesBranch in 2008.

Margaret Biggs, who retiredfrom the Government of Canadain spring 2016, will become theMatthews Fellowin Global PublicPolicy. Ms. Biggswas president ofthe Canadian In-ternational Development Agency(CIDA) from 2008to 2013. Duringthat time, she played an importantrole in developing and imple-menting Canada’s global publicpolicy in areas such as maternaland child health, food security,economic growth, and democraticgovernance. Ms. Biggs will be fa-miliar to many at Queen’s, havingpreviously served as the Skelton-Clark Fellow in the School of Pol-icy Studies.

Don Drummond has been re-newed as the Stauffer-DunningFellow in Policy Studies. Mr.

Drummond built a 23-year careerwith FinanceCanada in the ar-eas of economicanalysis and fore-casting, fiscal pol-icy, and tax pol-icy. Heprogressed to theposition of associ-ate deputy minister, where he wasresponsible for economic analysis,fiscal policy, tax policy, social pol-icy, and federal-provincial rela-tions. He also coordinated theplanning of the annual federalbudgets. He left the federal publicservice in 2000 to become the sen-ior vice president and chief econo-mist at TD Bank until 2010.

Morah Fenning will return tothe School of Policy Studies for asecond year as the Ontario PublicService (OPS) Amethyst Fellow.Ms. Fenning is on secondmentfrom the OPS, where she most re-cently served as the assistantdeputy minister of the tourismplanning and operations division.During her distinguished publicservice career of more than 25years in the OPS, Ms. Fenning hasdeveloped a breadth of expertise

in implementingpublic policy inboth operationaland regulatoryenvironments,both within gov-ernment andthrough agenciesof government. Inaddition to her most recent workin the tourism planning and oper-ations division, Ms. Fenning hasworked at senior levels in theMinistry of Economic Develop-ment and Trade, the Ministry ofChildren and Youth Services, theMinistry of the Environment, theMinistry of Transportation, theMinistry of Correctional Services,and the Ministry of the SolicitorGeneral.

Five welcomed into Royal SocietyBY ANNE CRAIG,COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Five Queen’s University profes-sors have been elected as fellowsto the Royal Society of Canada(RSC), one of the highest honoursfor Canadian academics in thearts, humanities, social sciences,and natural sciences. The fivenewest fellows from Queen’s havea wide variety of research inter-ests, including drama, philosophy,art history, and mathematics.

“The five newly-elected fellowshave made important contribu-tions to their respective fields andrepresent a diverse mix of areas ofstudy,” says Queen’s Principal andVice-Chancellor Daniel Woolf.“This award is a testament to theirexcellent work and I wish to con-gratulate them.”

The five new RSC membersare:

Daniel David Moses (DanSchool of Drama and Music) –With a career spanning fourdecades, the Delaware Indian ishailed as an artist, teacher, play-wright, poet, and essayist, and asa trailblazer for Canada’s First Na-tions writing and storytellingcommunity.

“This is a wonderful vote ofconfidence,” says Mr. Moses.“When I started writing, it was inpart in response to being toldthere was no such thing as Indianstories. This fellowship indicatesmy friends and I have managed tochange more than a few mindsabout the nature of the country.”

Mr. Moses’s award-winningworks – 13 produced and pub-lished plays, four poetry book col-lections, dozens of poems, andfour editions of an anthology ofCanadian Aboriginal literature –insist on the humanity and varietyof viewpoints of Canada’s Indige-nous Peoples.

Craig Walker (Dan School ofDrama and Music) – The Directorof the Dan School of Drama andMusic, Dr. Walker is a leadingscholar in Canadian drama as wellas a creative theatre practitioner.

He has received considerable ad-miration as a playwright, director,composer, artistic director, andeducator.

“This is an opportunity to meetother people in my field who maywant to collaborate and it will alsoinvigorate my own work,” saysDr. Walker.

As a scholar, he is recognizedas an authority on Canadian the-atre, and sparked internationalappreciation for Canada’s mosteminent playwrights with hisbook The Buried Astrolabe: Cana-dian Dramatic Imagination andWestern Tradition.

David Bakhurst (Philosophy) –The Charlton Professor of Philoso-phy at Queen’s is an internation-ally recognized scholar who has

made unprecedented contribu-tions to the understanding of 20thcentury Russian thought, as wellas to ethics, philosophical psy-chology, and philosophy of educa-tion. His work is highly interdisci-plinary and shows remarkableversatility and creativity.

“Russian philosophy is not awell-known field, so I am de-lighted to receive this recognition,and I thank Queen’s and my de-partment for creating an environ-ment in which unusual researchinterests can be fruitfully pur-sued,” he says.

Dr. Bakhurst is the recipient ofvarious honours, including a visit-ing fellowship at All Souls Col-lege, Oxford.

Joan Schwartz (Art Historyand Art Conservation) – Recog-nized internationally for her pio-neering work as a photographichistorian, archival theorist, andhistorical geographer, Dr.Schwartz has made distinctive,original contributions to scholar-ship in the history of photographyin Canada and professional prac-tice in the management ofarchives.

“Of course, it’s enormously re-warding to be recognized in thisway, especially since my workstraddles three fields, my careerpath has been far from traditional,and my field of inquiry is taught

in so few places,” says Dr.Schwartz. “After a career inarchives, I have Queen’s to thankfor the opportunity to pursue myinterests in photography, geogra-phy, and history in a universitysetting, and I feel this honour isvery much a reflection on theQueen’s National Scholar programand my department.”

Her multi-disciplinary perspec-tive has challenged long-standingassumptions and forged new un-derstandings about the role ofphotographs in society, theirpreservation in archives, and theirplace in Canadian historiography.

Troy Day (Mathematics and

Statistics) – Dr. Day is recognizedfor his interdisciplinary contribu-tions to mathematics and the lifesciences, particularly in the area ofevolutionary theory. His analysesof a diverse array of topics – in-cluding the evolutionary biologyof infectious disease and the evo-lutionary consequences of antimi-crobial drug treatment – havegreatly advanced our understand-ings of these subjects.

“The award is fantastic recog-nition of my whole team of stu-dents and post-docs,” says Dr.Day. “Anything like this raises theprofile of my entire researchgroup.”

Queen’s announces twovice-principal appointmentsBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

Principal Daniel Woolf an-nounced Thursday, Sept. 8 the ap-pointments of Caroline Davis asthe inaugural vice-principal (facil-ities, properties, and sustainabil-ity), and Donna Janiec as the newvice-principal (finance and admin-istration).

Ms. Davis’s appointment is fora two-year term, while Ms.Janiec’s is a continuing appoint-ment. Both appointments are ef-fective Oct. 1.

“Ms. Davis possesses the skills,knowledge, and experience neces-sary to launch this important port-folio and ensure our facilities andproperties are managed in a cohe-sive and strategic manner,” Princi-pal Woolf says. “Furthermore, Ms.Janiec is well-suited and preparedto step in to the vice-principal roleafter developing her talents andleadership skills as the associatevice-principal over the past sevenyears.”

The new portfolio, created inApril 2016, will oversee CampusPlanning and Development, Phys-ical Plant Services, and leasedproperty such as Innovation Park.Ms. Davis will play a leading roleas Queen’s advances institutionalpriorities such as classroom re-newal, major capital projects, de-ferred maintenance, and sustain-ability initiatives including theClimate Action Plan.

Ms. Davis joined Queen’s inJanuary 2010 as the vice-principal(finance and administration) aftera successful and wide-ranging ca-reer in the federal public service.In her last position as assistantdeputy minister, resolution andindividual affairs, at Indian and

Northern Affairs Canada (INAC),she oversaw the implementationof the Indian Residential SchoolsSettlement Agreement.

In 2009, Ms. Davis became afellow of the Institute of Char-tered Accountants of Ontario,which is awarded for outstand-ing career achievements andservice to the community and theaccountancy profession. Ms.Davis has volunteered with sev-eral community organizations.She currently serves as chair of

the board of directors for theUnited Way serving Kingston,Frontenac, Lennox and Adding-ton.

Ms. Janiec was appointed asso-ciate vice-principal (finance) in2009. Prior to that appointment,she held various positions in theFaculty of Arts and Science, theOffice of the Vice-Principal (Acad-emic), and Risk Management andAudit Services.

Before joining Queen’s in 1994,Ms. Janiec worked nearly 10 yearsin public accounting. She articledwith PricewaterhouseCoopers af-ter earning her undergraduatedegree from the University ofWaterloo, obtaining her charteredaccounting designation in 1987. Inaddition to her work at Queen’s,Ms. Janiec is vice-chair of theKingston General Hospital’sboard of directors and chair ofthe board’s governance commit-tee.

Queen’s renews commitment to support community safetyBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

In recognition of the impor-tant role that the Kingston PoliceForce plays in ensuring the safetyof the Queen’s community, Prin-cipal and Vice-Chancellor DanielWoolf announced Thursday thatthe university is renewing itscommitment to provide financialsupport for community policing.

“Queen’s values its relation-ship with the City of Kingstonand all members of the Kingstoncommunity. The university istremendously appreciative of theefforts of the Kingston PoliceForce to help ensure the safety of

the Queen’s community,” Princi-pal Woolf says. “Recognizingthat there are times over thecourse of the year when addi-tional police resources are re-quired, Queen’s is pleased to re-new its commitment tocontribute $100,000 annually tothe City of Kingston.”

The university first made acommitment to contribute fundsin support of community polic-ing in 2013, after the return ofHomecoming, and following ex-tensive consultation with stake-holders, including the KingstonPolice Force, the Police ServicesBoard, city representatives, stu-

dents, Queen’s alumni and com-munity members. This renewalof Queen’s commitment will seethose contributions continue fora further three years, beginningthis year.

“I thank Mayor Bryan Pater-son, city officials and theKingston Police Force for all ofthe support that they provide toQueen’s throughout the year, aswell as our students, includingthe Alma Mater Society, for theirefforts in promoting a safe andrespectful campus environment,”Principal Woolf says. “I look for-ward to continuing to build therelationship between Queen’s

and Kingston, as the universitycelebrates its 175th anniversaryand beyond.”

Queen’s contribution to the

City of Kingston is intended tosupport community policing, in-cluding outreach and engage-ment work, and to help offset thecosts of the additional resourcesthat may be required throughoutthe year.

Building the skill set to prevent sexual violenceBY ANDREW CARROLL,GAZETTE EDITOR

When it comes to talking abouta difficult subject like sexual vio-lence, Mike Domitrz takes an ap-proach that is direct and engagingfor students.

His talk, Can I Kiss You? is fast-paced and uses humour. On Mon-day, Sept. 5 Mr. Domitrz spokewith all first-year students atQueen’s in a pair of presentationsat the Athletics and RecreationCentre as part of Orientation ac-tivities.

Through his show, he shareshow-to skills for asking for con-sent, being a proactive bystanderand properly supporting sur-vivors of sexual violence. This isall in an effort to create a moreopen dialogue about sex, helpprevent assaults and promote asupportive campus for studentswho experience sexual violence.

Mr. Domitrz knows all too

well the devastating effects ofsexual violence. His sister wasraped and her story formed thecatalyst of his work. It’s whatdrove him to create his organiza-

tion, Date Safe Project, and helpmake a difference. What he hasfound through his presentationsis that young people are eager tohelp others.

“Students want to do the rightthing, around the country,” hesays. “They just wish they had theright skill set to do the right thing.So we have to do a better job as asociety of giving them the skill setto make good choices and be ableintervene and to make goodchoices themselves in their ownmoments.”

The presentation marks thesecond year that Queen’s hasbrought in a special guest duringOrientation Week to speak aboutconsent and to educate studentsabout sexual violence. Last year,educator and activist Dr. RachelGriffin shared her personal storywith the incoming class.

This annual event is part of theuniversity’s ongoing efforts to ad-dress sexual violence in align-ment with the Ontario govern-ment’s action plan, “It’s neverOk.”

Mr. Domitrz says that he wasexcited to speak with incoming

students and was impressed thatQueen’s is dedicated to dis-cussing sexual violence and that anumber of university leaders in-cluding Provost Benoit-AntoineBacon, Vice-Provost and Dean ofStudent Affairs Ann Tierney, andRector Cam Yung, attended theevent.

“It tells us that they really careabout these topics…You have aschool that’s saying we caredeeply and you have a provostwho was at the front of the roomfor the whole program,” he says.“It says we care and we want tolearn and we want to grow andsolve this problem.”

While driving home, I remem-ber thinking, “what is wrongwith today’s Snapchatting, Insta-gram-posting, GOT-loving stu-dents? Don’t they know how hardwe work on our lectures?” Asthese thoughts were zippingthrough my brain, I glanceddown at my iPhone and was, onceagain stunned by its elegant de-

sign and simplicity.In my driveway, I thought how

Steve Jobs, might have interpretedthe day’s event. How would he re-engineer our current systemfounded on the one-hour didacticlecture to meet the expectations oftoday’s digital generation?

Once home, I was stopped inmy tracks for a second time in theday, as I saw a series of wet, bluefootprints that had been freshlyapplied to our white kitchen floor.Following them, I found our, then10-year-old son, Evan, delicatelybalanced on the top of his steplad-der, applying another layer of vi-brant blue acrylic paint to the topof his 72-inch canvas. As Iwatched him expertly apply layerafter layer, I asked him where helearned how to do this (I certainlyhadn’t taught him), to which hesimply responded, “YouTube.”

And with that response, the re-ality of modern education becameclear. It was no longer about Cecil’sand Harrison’s, or thoughts con-veyed on Gates’s default blue pow-erpoint slides. And it certainly wasnot about the fact that we put fivehours into developing a great lec-ture a decade ago. Quite simply, itis about what they want, how theyare wired and how they learn.

That night, I designed theblueprint for medskl.com – anopen-access medical educationsite. I considered how it wouldlook, what it would do, and howit would serve the needs andwants of a new generation of

medical students.Now some three years later,

thanks to the efforts of a smallteam of dedicated editors, anima-tors, videographers and coders tosupport 180+ leading global fac-ulty – we have just formallylaunched medskl.com.

What exactly is medskl.com? Itis a FOAMed (free open accessmedical education) platform thatwill provide digital lessons to thenext generation of physicians. Always putting students firstIf there was an underlying phi-

losophy that guided Peter Plate-nius’ career, it would be, “Put stu-dents first.”

Dr. Platenius passed away onSunday, May 15,in his 80th year.

He firstjoined the De-partment of Psy-chology atQueen’s as a lec-turer in 1966, be-coming an asso-ciate professorby 1972. Heserved as Acting Director of Part-Time Studies in 1983 and retiredfrom the university in 1996.

Predeceased by his wife Inez,he is survived by his sons Davidand John, daughter-in-lawMichelle and grandchildren

Owen, Reed and Chloe.As a professor, it meant that he

invested in teaching from the lec-ture hall to answering questionsduring office hours. And, as hetaught brain and behaviour, it wascommon to find a model of thebrain taken apart on his desk orbalancing on top of a precariouspile of books. As much as studentsdreaded testing, his tests chal-lenged them to think outside thebox with questions such as de-scribing the abilities of the resi-dents of the planet Pluto who did-n’t have a fully developedcerebellum and how it affectedtheir society.

Administration, both as an As-sociate Dean of Studies in the Fac-ulty of Arts and Science and thenlong-term Undergraduate Chair inthe Department of Psychology,

took him away from the researchthat interested him for decades.He had an encyclopedic memoryof the academic regulations, en-forcing them with fairness, withan understanding of both whythey were important and the rea-sons that the Faculty Board hadapproved them.

He also understood the limita-tions of bureaucracy and had alow tolerance level for paperwork.Students who didn’t have a med-ical note who showed up for anexam while sick were simply senthome. Having signed thousandsof forms, his handwriting waswell recognized across campus.Many a staff member doing dataentry during September registra-tion would look for his signatureas “Mickey Mouse” or “DonaldDuck.”

Although he was no pushover,he’d go the extra mile for those un-dergraduates who demonstratedthat they were willing to workhard and deserved a break. In onecase, a student from Africa came tohim for help because he was notaccepted to graduate school due tothe poor grades he had received infirst and second year while strug-gling with English. Peter didn’thesitate, reaching out to graduateschools and finding one in theUnited States willing to make anexception based on the informa-tion he provided to them.

He was also very aware of theneed for supporting students withmental health problems. One stu-dent reported that while dis-tressed and alone in the ER, Dr.Platenius had shown up to sitwith her. She asked, did we know

that he held his briefcase togetherwith rope? Yes, we’d noticed.

There were many things we’dnoticed: his authenticity, his in-tegrity, his laughter. He was hos-pitable, welcoming faculty, staffand graduate students to hiscountry home for an annual Sep-tember bonfire. He was creative,joining his wife in a local theatregroup pitching in with buildingsets and even taking a dramaticrole one year. He loved flying hisairplane, even putting a runwayon his property. Having spent partof his childhood in South Amer-ica, he liked to travel there.

There isn’t a person whoworked with him over the years atQueen’s who didn’t have afavourite story about Peter. Hewas memorable and he will bemissed.

CTL grants help forge new educational paths BY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

This year’s successful applica-tions for the Centre for Teachingand Learning’s grants programshave been announced, includingthe first Educational LeadershipInitiative grant.

The three grant programs – Ed-ucational Research, Teaching andLearning Enhancement and Edu-cational Leadership Initiative –provide support for the ongoingdrive to improve and enhanceteaching and learning at Queen’sUniversity.

“We are very excited to offerthese opportunities,” says PeterWolf, Associate Vice-Provost(Teaching and Learning) and Di-rector of the Centre for Teachingand Learning. “They help engagededucators to further meet thelearning needs of our students.”

New this year, the EducationalLeadership Initiative is aimed at

supporting Queen’s students, fac-ulty, librarians and staff who wantto forge a new educational path.

The inaugural winners of thegrant are Claire Davies (Mechani-cal and Materials Engineering)and Elizabeth Delarosa (Mechani-cal and Materials Engineering),and Catherine Donnelly (Rehabili-tation Therapy) and Susanne Mur-phy (Rehabilitation Therapy) fortheir project which seeks to applythe Canadian InterprofessionalHealth Collaborative’s frameworkto an academic environment.

As students within the rehabili-tation sciences and engineeringprograms often collaborate, theproposed initiative will enablethem to gain a deeper understand-ing of their respective roles andspark innovation to address re-ported social challenges by learn-ing how to form partnerships.

Two Educational Researchgrants – one each for faculty and

students – have been awardedwith the aim of encouraging andsupporting evidence-based studiesof teaching and learning as well asthe sharing of the findings and re-sults. The recipients are:

Mike Condra (Psychology) andMira Dineen know that peer men-toring is a key piece to the mentalhealth supportnetwork forpost-secondarystudents. Theyhave seen thepositive resultsfirst hand hereat Queen’s Uni-versity.

Now Dr.Condra, the for-mer director ofQueen’s Health, Counselling andDisabilities Services, and Ms. Di-neen, a Queen’s alumna and for-mer staff member, are hoping toexpand peer mentoring programsto post-secondary institutions inOntario and beyond.

The duo recently led a MentalHealth Innovation Fund projectaimed at developing a peer men-toring program for students withmental health issues – Dr. Condrabeing the Principal Investigatorand Ms. Dineen the Project Coor-dinator.

The result of the two-yearproject – which included run-ning a peer-mentoring programfrom September 2014 to April2015 – is a program resourcemanual with training materialsto help any post-secondary insti-tution set up its own peer men-toring program.

During the pilot project, theyfound that the connections madethrough peer mentoring clearly

helped students in need of sup-port.

“Peer mentoring is really valu-able as a complement to profes-sional services. It doesn’t replacecounselling or seeing a physician,but it gives students a sense of ac-ceptance that is more impactfulwhen it comes from a peer insteadof a counsellor,” says Ms. Dineen,who is now pursuing a Master’sdegree in social work at York Uni-versity. “A peer mentor is someonea student can relate to and iden-tify with, and it’s meaningful tosee that they are showing up, theycare, and they want to listen toyou and help you as you gothrough difficult times.”

After receiving the go-aheadfor the project, funded by theprovincial government, the firststep was to create the trainingprogram for the peer mentors –determining what skills were nec-essary, developing training ses-sions, and differentiating a peermentor’s role from that of a coun-sellor, tutor, or friend.

The second step was to recruitthe peer mentors. An advertise-ment was put out for the 18 posi-tions. The response they receivedfrom Queen’s students was over-whelming – 135 applicationsflooded in. It was surprising but,knowing the Queen’s community,perhaps should not have been un-expected, says Dr. Condra.

“Queen’s has a strong traditionand practice of having students inleadership and mentorship roles,”he explains. “We realized that, infact, finding students was actuallyrelatively easy because students

were interested. The program in-volved mental health, it involvedeffective training and it providedleadership opportunities.”

The year-long program wouldgo on to be a success and whilestudents with mental health issuesfound support, those involved asmentors also benefitted from theirexperiences.

“It was really great to see thatthe peer mentors learned a lotfrom the experience as well,” Ms.Dineen says. “In addition to theways that mentees benefitted, a lotof the peer mentors found that theexperience helped them becomebetter friends, better roommates,as they had better listening skills,and more empathy. That surpriseda lot of them; it was great to seethat they grew from the experi-ence.”

Into its final stage, the trainingmanual will be shared with stake-holders and posted on the websitefor the Centre for Innovation inCampus Mental Health. Already,interest has been expressed fromnot only across Ontario andCanada, but from schools in theUnited States and one in NewZealand, Ms. Dineen says, addingthat the project has been a positiveexperience personally as well.

“It was really inspiring to seethe program succeed and to seethe way that the peer mentors roseto the occasion to provide effec-tive support to their fellow stu-dents. The mentees really openedup, made themselves vulnerable,and stepped up and said ‘I wantto try this,’” she says. “That wasreally admirable.”

As the 35th rector of Queen’sUniversity Cameron Yung,ArtSci’16, has learned that the po-sition comes with a lot of historyand traditions.

After being elected earlier thisyear, Mr. Yung moved into the rec-tor’s office in the John DeutschUniversity Centre on May 1 andhas quickly come to the realiza-tion that while one of his mainroles is being the voice of the stu-dent body with the university ad-ministration, taking the time to lis-ten to students is the truefoundation of the office.

“When it comes to supportingstudents what it really looks likeis having that opportunity of lis-tening,” he says. “Generally, I liketo listen to people because I lovestories, I love listening to stories. Ilove learning about differentthings and what’s happening withpeople.”

By listening, Rector Yung canthen direct them to the diverserange of resources available atQueen’s or raise an issue at ahigher level.

That’s what really drew him tothe position – the opportunity tohelp his fellow students. He likensit to the work he did as a resi-dence don, just on a campus-widescale.

With the 2016-17 academic yearnow getting underway, the realwork is beginning for the rector.Having the summer to get readyhas been helpful, he says.

“I have been trying to read upon policy around Queen’s, espe-cially ones that pertain to stu-dents, whether it’s academics pol-

icy, whether it’s the new sexual as-sault policy, whether it’s policywhen it comes to student well-ness, mental health,” he says. “It’salso reading up about my dailyfunctions, so when it comes toSenate, when it comes to Board ofTrustees. There’s a lot of informa-tion for the office, there’s a lot ofhistory and records here so I’vereally been delving into that andtrying to get a good understand-ing of what the job is and whatmy expectations are and what I re-ally want to do for myself aswell.”

During his tenure – up to threeyears – Rector Yung has set fivemain priorities, the first of which

is fostering what he terms as a“mentally-aware campus” wherestudents have the ability to sup-port friends and colleagues onmental health issues.

He also wants to bolster aware-ness regarding sexual violence.

“Another goal for myself, espe-cially right now, is providingtraining to students when it comesto consent and sexual assault,” hesays. “(Queen’s) has the new pol-icy on campus and one of thethings we really want to push for-ward is training when it comes tobeing a bystander and that issomething that we think can reallyhelp to address and change theconceptions of sex on campus as

well as raising awareness of con-sent.”

The rector also wants to focuson resources for international stu-dents. With an increasing numberof students arriving at Queen’sfrom outside Canada, Rector Yungsays the amount of resources – ed-ucational, cultural as well as formental health and sexual violence– that are available for interna-tional students must match thatexpansion.

Continuing with growth, thefourth priority for the rector is in-creasing the amount of study spaceavailable to students on campus ashe says demand for the spaces hasalready matched the supply cur-

rently available. Lastly, Rector Yung would like

to increase the recognition for stu-dent leaders on campus by boost-ing the awareness of the TricolourAwards.

Lofty goals for sure but, fortu-nately, as the rector, Mr. Yung isable to raise these issues at the de-cision-making level.

“With the role of rector I amvery privileged with having theopportunity of speaking with ad-ministration as well as sitting onboards that help to governQueen’s, such as the Board ofTrustees,” he says. “Having thatchance to speak with boardmembers is a really good oppor-tunity for raising awareness ofthe needs of students and whatwe can continue to provide them.That’s really important and that’swhat I’d like to continue to en-hance moving forward, that com-munication and that awarenessor students.”

Queen’s is the only universityin Canada with a rector, a positiondating back to the early days ofthe first universities in Scotland.The first Rector – Rev. S.W. Dyde –took office in 1913.

The rector is the third officer ofthe university, after the chancellorand principal. The primary func-tion is to represent students on theBoard of Trustees, but also to pro-vide advice and support for thestudents.

The rector also takes part inconvocation, joining the principaland chancellor for each cere-mony.

Queen’s University announcedon Tuesday, Sept. 6 that it has re-ceived an investment of $63.7 mil-lion from the Government ofCanada’s Canada First ResearchExcellence Fund (CFREF) to sup-port the creation of the CanadianParticle Astrophysics ResearchCentre (CPARC).

The centre aims to strengthenpartnerships between Queen’s andother Canadian universities, attracttop talent and build on Canada’sposition as a leader in the field.

“We are very thankful to theGovernment of Canada for theirsupport for the new CanadianParticle Astrophysics ResearchCentre,” says Daniel Woolf, Prin-cipal and Vice-Chancellor. “Thisfunding from the Canada First Re-search Excellence Fund is a testa-ment to the impact that Queen’sresearchers are having in Canadaand internationally in the study ofthe deepest mysteries of the uni-verse. This new research centrewill expand the scientific cultureat Queen’s by attracting highly-skilled researchers who will leadthe way on the next generation ofground-breaking experiments.”

The new centre will be head-quartered at Queen’s, with mem-bers located at seven affiliatedCanadian universities and five affil-iated research organizations. Tosupport the centre’s continuing andfuture research and experiments, 41positions for researchers, engineers,designers and technicians will becreated. In addition, positions forapproximately 18 postdoctoral fel-

lows and 40 graduate students willbe created on an annual basis.Queen’s has already committed toadding seven new faculty members– including two Tier II Canada Re-search Chairs – in support of thecentre and its research aims.

“Through this initiative we willdevelop new particle astrophysicsdetectors capable of probing thehighest priority questions inphysics today while integratingstudents, fostering greater interna-tional collaboration, engaging in-dustry and cementing Canada’splace as the global leader in thefield,” says Tony Noble, InterimDirector of CPARC.

The funding will be used to es-tablish the CPARC as the world’sleading research group in thestudy of particle astrophysics.Through its new and existingpartnerships, the centre will be in-volved in many of the world’sleading dark matter (PICO,NEWS, SuperCDMS and DEAP-3600) and neutrino physics(SNO+) experiments. These part-nerships will allow researchers toextract maximum scientific outputfrom the current suite of SNOLABexperiments.

“Today’s investment in creatingCPARC is evidence of the govern-ment’s commitment to excellence inresearch,” says Mark Gerretsen,Member of Parliament for Kingstonand the Islands. “This funding willhelp Queen’s researchers becomeglobal leaders in particle astro-physics and is critical to Canada’slong-term success in today’s glob-ally competitive world.”

In addition to its primary re-search aims, the new centre will

also provide additional opportu-nities for industry partnerships,which will benefit, amongst oth-ers, the nuclear, mining and med-ical industries. It will also providenew opportunities to embed stu-dents at all stages of their careersin this scientific culture, develop-ing skills and creating training op-portunities through linkages tocolleges, industries and interna-tional programs.

“At Queen’s we have fostered aculture of research excellence andstrongly encourage and supportthe collaborative efforts of our re-searchers,” says Steven Liss, Vice-Principal (Research). “Through itsmany partnerships and the collec-tive work of its researchers, theCanadian Particle AstrophysicsResearch Centre will cementQueen’s and Canada’s place as aworld-leading destination for par-ticle astrophysics research.”

Particle astrophysics is an insti-tutional priority at Queen’s Uni-versity. A leading research-inten-sive university, Queen’s hasconsistently demonstrated its un-wavering support for this fieldsince the inception of the SNOproject over two decades ago. In2014, Queen’s announced the ap-pointment of Dr. Gilles Gerbier asthe Canada Excellence ResearchChair in Particle Astrophysics. Dr.Art McDonald’s co-receipt of the2015 Nobel Prize in Physics, andthe awarding of the 2016 Break-through Prize in FundamentalPhysics, came in recognition of hisleadership role in the SudburyNeutrino Observatory team –many of whom are now leaderson the CPARC initiative.

When it comes to arriving atQueen’s University for the 2016-17academic year incoming interna-tional students are the earlybirds.

The majority of Queen’s stu-dents arrive or return to the uni-versity over the first two weeks ofSeptember but many interna-tional students arrive earlier inorder to settle into a new univer-sity and possibly a new culture.

Hard at work helping providethe needed support are the staffand volunteers of the Queen’sUniversity International Centre(QUIC). With an increasing num-ber of international students ar-riving each year QUIC has like-wise expanded its programmingand services to help with thetransition period, creating a solidfoundation for their Queen’s ex-perience.

At the centre of all the effortsis welcoming the new arrivalsinto the community, explainsQUIC Director Jyoti Kotecha.

“This is their home away fromhome. We want to make sure thatthey feel they have a safe placewhere they can go, relax andrest,” she says. “So a lot of the ac-tivities apart from the official ori-entation sessions that we give re-ally focus around building acommunity for them.”

The effort to welcome the in-

ternational students begins longbefore they arrive, with planningsessions starting early in the cal-endar year. Through the Accul-turation and Transition to Lifeand Academic Success (ATLAS)program students take part inOrientation Week activities whilea newly-designed series of webi-nars throughout the summer pro-vides information and helps stu-dents make the connections theyneed.

“We presented webinars to an-

swer questions such as how dothey get here, things to be think-ing about and to let them knowthe type of support not only thatwe give them as they try to settlein to campus at Queen’s and inKingston but also what our part-ners around student affairs offerthem,” Ms. Kotecha says. “Thisincludes student wellness, stu-dent housing support, fitting inand finding your social network,and peer mentoring groups.”

Also new this year is the intro-

duction of a self-serve online por-tal, created by IT Services, that al-lows students to complete theirregistration for the UniversityHealth Insurance Plan (UHIP)without having to come into theQUIC offices, as was requiredpreviously. The development ofthe portal was led by Steacy Tib-butt, the UHIP administrator atQUIC.

“In the past every student hadto come here to QUIC to physi-cally talk to our UHIP adminis-

trator and get their proof of in-surance,” Ms. Kotecha says,adding that in the first weekalone more than 900 students reg-istered before even arriving atQueen’s. “The students can log inat home. They are asked fourvery simple questions and theycan print their UHIP coverage athome at whatever time that theywant to do this.”

Looking forward to the aca-demic year, QUIC has also part-nered with the Student Experi-ence Office and is offeringacademic peer mentoringthrough the Q Success program.

It’s a new world for many ofthe newly-arriving students andQUIC offers basic supports suchas providing information oneverything from transit to cul-tural adjustment, explains HanaStanbury, QUIC Student Pro-grams: Promotion and VolunteerCoordinator. Housing can also bean issue and to help fill in anygaps a partnership with Queen’sResidences provides students atemporary place to stay untilmore permanent accommoda-tions are set up.

“That is very helpful,” Ms.Stanbury says. “So when the in-ternational students arrive theycan spend few nights there.”

As the Koerner Visiting Artistin Residence, Ciara Phillips,Artsci’00, has been enjoying herown private homecoming.

It has been a little over 15years since she graduated fromQueen’s University but the 2014Turner Prize finalist has foundfamiliarity in her return, particu-larly in Ontario Hall, the home ofthe Fine Arts program.

“Ontario Hall hasn’t changed.The smell, the signs, thescratches on the elevator, the but-tons,” she says with a laugh,adding that it has been fun tocatch up with the department’sfaculty members as well. “Theonly thing that is different is thestudents I have been workingwith weren’t even born when Ifirst showed up at Victoria Hallwith my parents.”

However, she doesn’t see thelack of change as a negative. In-stead she sees it as a sign of con-tinuity at a time when manypost-secondary artistic programsare under pressure to prove theirworth.

“I think fine art is just funda-mental to the human experience.It is an innovative field but its re-turns are a long game. It’s notquick returns,” she says. “It’s nota case of where you invest in it

and automatically see whatcomes out of it. You have to beprepared to let it percolate. Isuppose what has happened tome is a good example of that.”

Now an award-winning, in-ternationally-recognized artist,her current success took years ofhard work and perseverance.

After graduating fromQueen’s, Ms. Phillips moved toGlasgow, Scotland, where sheearned a Master of Fine Art in2004 at the Glasgow School ofArt. Ten years later she becamethe first Canadian-born finalist inthe 30-year history Turner Prize,which recognizes the top youngartists in Britain. She was nomi-nated for her exhibition Work-shop, where she turned a Londongallery into a print workshop.

Ms. Phillips says her time atQueen’s and in Ontario Hall al-lowed her to set the foundationof her career. It’s an opportunityshe would like to see more

young artists experience.“What I think was really fan-

tastic here was that we had On-tario Hall, and I am glad it hasremained the same, as it givesstudents a free space – there aregood resources there and youjust have to let students do it,”she says. “It’s a big leap to gofrom high school to start think-ing about being an artist and it’sabout learning to be an inde-pendent and critical thinker. Youjust have to give people space todo that, and a community ofartists around them to supportand challenge them.”

As the Koerner Visiting ArtistMs. Phillips delivered a publiclecture earlier this year and hasstarted a five-week residency atthe Agnes Etherington Art Cen-tre, where a major exhibition ofher work Comrade Objects is be-ing displayed through to Dec. 4.At the same time she hasmounted a new iteration ofWorkshop at the Agnes where shewill be collaborating withQueen’s and Kingston audiences.

The Agnes Etherington ArtCentre’s Fall Season Launch isscheduled for Sept. 15.

The Queen’s Gaels women’ssoccer team has gotten off to aperfect start and in the processearned head coach Dave McDow-ell his 300th career win forQueen’s through regular seasonand playoffs.

On Saturday, Sept. 3, the Gaelsdefeated the visiting NipissingLakers 2-1 at Miklas-McCarneyField in their home opener, withgoals from Jenny Wolever andRachel Radu.

On Sunday the Gaels recordeda 2-0 win over the LaurentianVoyageurs. Dominating the firsthalf, the CIS seventh-ranked Gaelsopened the scoring just before thebreak through Tara Bartram. TheGaels kept control in the secondhalf and Jenny Wolever doubled

the lead in the 85th minute.Coming into the season ranked

seventh nationally, the Gaels re-turned to the top of the OUA lastyear with a gold medal. Returningto the lineup with the hope of re-peating as OUA Champions areOUA East All-Stars Lidia Bradauand Jenny Wolever.

The Queen’s women’s soccerteam has put together an impres-sive resume over the past seven

years, accumulating two OUAChampionships, two OUA silvermedals, two OUA bronze medals,one CIS silver medal, and earningback-to-back CIS Championships.

“We know that the OUA Eastwill be extremely competitive thisseason,” says head coach DaveMcDowell. “We look forward tothe high calibre competition thatwill come from so many talentedopponents.”

The Queen’s Gaels men’s soccerteam opened their season with apair of wins.

On Saturday, Sept. 3, the Gaelsstormed to a 5-1 victory over theNipissing Lakers with goals fromPatrick Van Belleghem, TommyHong, Jacob Schroeter, KyleOwens and Michael Chang.

On Sunday, Schroeter scored apair of goals as the Gaels notcheda 4-2 win over the LaurentianVoyageurs. After the visitorsopened the scoring the Gaels re-sponded in the 28th minutethrough Sam Abernathy. After thebreak the Voyageurs regained thelead but Schroeter then scoredtwice in two minutes and PatrickVan Belleghem added an insurancemarker with just two minutes left.

Last season the Gaels finishedthird in the OUA East for the thirdstraight year, and were eliminated

in the OUA quarterfinals.Looking to build on that suc-

cess the lineup for the tricolourthis year includes returning OUAEast Division All-Stars JacobSchroeter, Oliver Coren, KristianZanette and Sam Abernathy.

Despite making the playoffsthe last four years, Queen’s hasn’twon an OUA medal since their2007 season, when they earned anOUA bronze medal. The Gaelswill be looking to get past thequarterfinal round – a feat theyhaven’t accomplished since 2012.

“This is the most quality in ros-ter depth that I have seen in manyyears. Dean Richard Reznick is pleasedto announce the appointment ofStéphanie Bélanger and HeidiCramm as interim co-scientific di-rectors of the Canadian Institute forMilitary and Veteran Health Re-search (CIMVHR).

Dr. Bélanger completed a PhD at

the University of Toronto in 2003and earned her MPA at the RoyalMilitary College of Canada in 2013.Dedicated to serving those whoserve us, Dr. Bélanger is co-founderof CIMVHR and has served as asso-ciate scientific director since 2010.

Dr. Bélanger is a leader in mili-tary and veteran health research.She has published widely in thepeer-reviewed literature and herco-edited collection Beyond theLine: Military and Veteran Health Re-search ranked seventh on the HillTimes Best 100 Books in Politics,

Public Policy and History. She was adriving force behind the establish-ment of and now serves as co-edi-tor-in-chief for the Journal of Mili-tary, Veteran and Family Health. In2011, Dr. Bélanger was awarded theRoyal Military College of CanadaCommandant’s coin in recognitionof her leadership in research and in-volvement in the military and vet-eran community, and in 2013 shewas honoured with the Minister ofNational Defence’s coin in recogni-tion of her dedication and leader-ship in the advancement of re-

search on the women and leader-ship in the Canadian Forces. In2015, she was inducted into the Le-gion of Honour of the Four Chap-lains Memorial Foundation.

Dr. Cramm earned a Master ofScience in occupational therapy in2003 from Dalhousie University anda PhD in rehabilitation science atQueen’s. She subsequently com-pleted a post-doctoral fellowship atthe Ivey International Centre forHealth Innovation at Western Uni-versity. Dr. Cramm joined theQueen’s School of Rehabilitation

Therapy as an assistant professor in2013. A leader in strategic knowl-edge translation initiatives acrossCanada, she has served as head ofKnowledge Translation withCIMVHR since 2014.

Dr. Cramm’s research focuses onmilitary and veteran family health,with an emphasis on mental health.She has authored numerous publi-cations and lectured extensively onher areas of expertise. In 2013, Dr.Cramm was awarded the GovernorGeneral’s Gold Medal for outstand-ing academic achievement.

Canadian adults spend an average of 70 per cent of their wakingours being sedentary. Increased sedentary time has been linked to in-reased risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Fit Tips to decrease sedentary time1. Try out a form of active transportation. Walk or cycle to work on

he next sunny day if you live within walking/cycling distance. 2. Replace your desk chair with an exercise ball for one hour of the

ay. This requires your body to engage your core while you're sittingnd help improve your balance and flexibility.

3. Perform modified squats at your desk chair. Stand just in front ofour desk chair and then slowly lower yourself to just above the chairithout actually sitting down, and then stand back up. Repeat this 10imes, take a small break, and then repeat the 10 repetitions two moreimes.
