Quality Control International Standards Organisations developed ISO -9001

standards in 1987

Designed to help organisations ensure that they meet the needs of the customers and other stakeholders while meeting statutory and regulatory requirements related to product.

In India ISO-9001 series was introduced by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

130 countries have adopted ISO standards.

ISO-9001 Deals with the fundamentals of quality management systems. Quality assurance applicable in design development, production

and installation.

ISO-9002 Quality assurance in production and installation

ISO-9003 Quality assurance in final inspection and test

ISO-9004 Quality system elements and guidelines

During the year 2000 these standards restructured and renamed as ISO-9000:2000. India also adopted them.

Characteristics of ISO-9000:2000 It integrates all activities which have direct or indirect effect on

the quality of products and services. It is not prescriptive; does not tell you “how” to do anything;

specifies “what” processes need to be in place It helps in defining product quality to meet customer requirements It is applicable to each and every product and service The customer can be satisfied of the quality of the product and

service

Objectives of ISO-9000:2000 Achieve, maintain, and improve product quality Improve quality of operations to continually meet customers’ and

stakeholders’ needs Provide confidence to management, employees, customers, and

stakeholders that quality requirements are fulfilled It has organized norms of functioning while manufacturing

products or rendering services. Builds a quality image for the customers It provides an edge over competitors as cost of production is

reduced leading to a lower sales price Provides a procedure to keep records of system at all stages

Importance of ISO Certification

ISO certification is an international standard which almost all countries are adopting

A product with ISO certification speaks of quality product or quality service at global level

In 1993 European Union countries imposed a condition in their export policy to purchase goods only from companies having ISO certification. As a result many companies in India were forced to adopt ISO Certification.
