ISO 9000

ISO is a non-governmental organization established in 1947. The mission is to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world with a view to facilitating the international exchange of goods and services. Is the acronym for International Organization for Standardization.

ISO of TQM● There is a misconception that ISO 9000 certification can guarantee a

quality product or service.● ISO 9000 is a good foundation on which to apply the TQM principles. Once

ISO 9000 certification is obtained and the current compliance with the laid down systems and standards are ensured, the PDCA cycle of continuous improvement can be applied, to reach the higher quality realms of TQM.

● ISO 9000 and TQM are complementary to each other.● ISO 9000 and TQM are passports to success.

BSI Standards

British Standards Institution● Came from the military after the WWII. As a result, MoD, AQAP, NATO

were born.● Major automotive industries established their own quality system

standards. In order to control the increase in different types of QSS, BSI eventually developed the military standards into a series of BS and it has been used as the source for ISO 9000 series.

CMM

Developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie-Mellon University of U.S.A.It is a model of 5 levels of organizational ‘maturity’ that determines the effectiveness in delivering quality software. It is geared to large organizations such as the U.S. Defence Department.CMM can be used for:

● Software Process improvement● Software Process Assessment● Software Capability evaluation

KPAs of different levels of CMM

Key Process areas are focus areas for the process improvement.Initial Level KPAsLevel 1 does not have any KPAs, Initially an organization gets the job done.

Repeatable Level KPAs● Requirement Management● Software Project Planning● Software Project Tracking and Oversight● Software Subcontract Management● Software Quality Assurance● Software Configuration Management
