PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 345 - 12 Jan 2002 Quality improvement in clinical practice requires organisational changes that are both strategic and systematic, and must be based on sound research methodology, say researchers from Australia. An evidence-based approach can assist in the implementation of evidence-based medicine using a framework for changing practice which includes the following steps: development of a concrete proposal, identification of obstacles, linking interventions to obstacles, development and implementation of a plan, and evaluation of progress. Strategies that have proved to be effective for quality improvement in practice include reminders, as well as small-group, interactive, problem-based educational sessions.
