The annual awards program by Contracting Business magazine will feature the 2015 winners in its July edition. Climate Partners in Milford, Conn. won a Quality Home Comfort Award for retrofits under 2,500 square feet by converting a fuel oil-heated house into a high-efficiency gem of sustainability. The goal, according to Climate Partner’s owner Tom Casey, was to provide environmentally sustainable indoor comfort for the homeowners’ learning-disabled daughter, who one day would be living in the home by herself. “This year’s winners are another shining example of how comfort can be attained in the smallest to the larges homes,” according to Contracting Business. “It’s more than just a matter of degrees – it’s a matter of understanding how the entire home operates as a system. These contractors have studied the science of comfort and know how to apply comfort solutions with style.” The conversion in Connecticut designed by Climate Partner’s Casey – considered an industry advocate for home efficiency and sustainability – installed a Daikin Altherma Inverter Hydronic Heat Pump paired with solar thermal water heating. A Daikin indoor Hydrobox and a Daikin variable-speed air handling unit round out the retrofit. Renewable energy systems now provide 100 percent of the home’s heating, cooling and water heating. The Daikin Hydrobox system provides highly efficient space heating and cooling that can provide comfort in rooms with high ceilings and glass facades, architectural features that tend to increase energy consumption. With a super-wide operating range for both heating and cooling, the Daikin product is ideal for refurbishment projects in locations with large temperature swings. The annual awards, according to Contracting Business, are based on a homeowner’s ability to control their indoor comfort.

“It seems that most people are most comfortable when they have control over their environment,” explained the magazine. “Yet most people settle for the bare minimum when it comes to their residential comfort systems. “The Quality Home Comfort Award program has always been about teaching consumers and contractors alike that settling for less in unacceptable.”
