WATERINGEN _ Jan van Eck liked his Galeon Flybridge 380 yet wanted
more. A level floor. Unobstructed space. Lots of comfort. The security
consultant thought up a 12m catamaran motor yacht and launched an
unusual way to bring it to market. He is an outsider with a keen eye
breaking new ground.
In yachts, he says, “you trip over all sorts of steps up and down, corners and
benches. I want an interior I can put together myself. And a boat that, in
changeable weather, can be opened and closed swiftly. And that has dimensions
suited for European waters.” Van Eck’s solution: the DutchCatTwelve, a 12m
catamaran motor yacht. It came to life in “impression images” that got a thumbs-
up from both Vripack naval architects and seed funds from Rabobank. By 2010,
security consultant Jan van Eck had become a yacht builder. Well, sort of.
He asked Vripack for a detailed design and began looking for partners. “I’m good
at managing processes,” he says. “I’m not building my own yard but use
available space in the market. I put all the parties I need to build a boat into a
chain. If one ‘chain partner’ doesn’t work out, I’ll pick another. So the chain
stays intact. Client input is welcome, where possible. The interior reflects a
client’s tastes and wishes. That’s why I call it the ‘DutchCat Concept’.”
