Happy New Year, and we hope you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas!It was so good to see many of you during our 94th Homecoming Weekend in

early October. Even if you were not able to attend, you can enjoy seeing some of the highlights in this winter issue of Quad as well as read about other exciting news, including our acceptance into the membership process with NCAA Division II. We celebrate and appreciate how God continues to bless Emmanuel College.

Whether you were on campus for homecoming or at other times for ball games or visits, we want to say thank you for taking time to connect with our current students. It likely has a bigger impact than you might think. Let me share what one student said:

This semester the main event that changed my outlook on Emmanuel College would have to be the Alumni Weekend. People from the past years that went to school here came back, and some talked to us.

Some told how the buildings looked when they went here, how some of the buildings were used for dorms instead of classrooms and some experiences in the classrooms. Some told how it changed their lives, and some told how they met the person they are with today at the school. They told stories about how the old gym was during basketball games, and how they wished they had the athletic center we have now.

They told us how we got the money for the athletic center, new field, science building and the library. All this touched me because I need all the resources that we have here, and, if it was not for those people who donated the money, we would not have it.

They were all so friendly and happy to see the students and athletes. They were so impressed with our new dorms when they saw them. A few told me they were so happy to see that the students were so polite, generous and caring.

I am happy I took time to go to the dedication and meet these people because it showed me how nice people are that graduated from here.

I am glad this event went the way it did, and I would not change anything that happened that weekend. But it changed me because I was thinking about transferring schools after a couple years here. Since that night, I have decided that I will stay all four years.

As you can see, your encouragement and support is invaluable in the lives of our students. You truly make a difference and help to shape the way people see what “God with us” really looks like.

As we move into a new year, may you and your loved ones also be encouraged and reminded that Emmanuel, God with us, is something we can share each and every day. Just a smile, a word, an acknowledgement can affect others, and we thank you for making a lasting and positive impression on our students.

Emmanuel College approved for NCAA Division II membership process and joins Conference Carolinas

“Today, we enter a new era and are pleased to announce that Emmanuel College is now approved to begin the membership process for NCAA Division II. With that, we also graciously accept an invitation to join Conference Carolinas,” Emmanuel President Michael Stewart announced in a press conference on September 23, 2013, on campus in the Shaw Athletic Center which opened last fall.

This is the first year of the typical three-year process toward gaining full membership to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) DII for Emmanuel College (EC). Nearly half of the full time students at EC are student athletes.

EC Athletic Director José Larios stressed EC’s continued commitment to the same strong mission the College has always had.

“This NCAA DII candidacy membership transition is our commitment to pursue excellence in the recruitment of highly skilled student-athletes and fostering a culture of high academic success, as

well as provide better competitive experiences. But, at the core, we will always be Emmanuel—we will always desire to be distinguished as a Christ-centered, community-minded athletic program. And though this is a new day for Emmanuel College, the core of who we are will never change.

“We all take this moment and thank all our athletic alumni and previous coaches who paved the way for this special time in Emmanuel athletics history,” Larios added.

President Stewart said balanced goals for our Christ-centered athletics program at Emmanuel are a natural fit with NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas.

“As a strong and long-standing conference within the NCAA, Conference Carolinas is made up of many reputable academic institutions. We share their goals in offering a more balanced, even playing field for our student athletes. Conference Carolinas is comprised of many schools our size that share our faith-based mission. Because of the closer proximity of those schools, we also recognize the benefits of more time in class and less travel time for our students,” President Stewart said.

EC again named Best Regional College and ranked tier one

“For the second consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report names Emmanuel College as tier one among private colleges and again ranks EC as a Best Regional College (South),” President Michael Stewart announces.

“Last year was the first time in our history to be ranked tier one, which is the highest level of achievement. This year we are also pleased to move ahead 12 ranks to up to 57th place in the 2014 rankings,” he adds.

This is exciting and encouraging news as Emmanuel College remains focused on its mission as a Christ-centered college to integrate faith, learning and living for effective careers, scholarship and service. This is also the second straight year total enrollment is above 800 students for this growing institution.

Jr. back to campus October 22 - 24 as he spent time sharing with students during convocation and chapel services and in various classes.

A 1969 graduate of Emmanuel College, Dr. Beacham is the General Superintendent and Presiding Bishop of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC). He delivered EC’s commencement address at the graduation ceremony in May 2013, and he was recently on campus for the 66th Annual Feast of Ingathering.

“Dr. Beacham was transparent, honest and vulnerable with all of us,” said Callie Sorrow, sophomore Christian Ministries major. “He challenged us to live worthy of the calling and shared that although we

face temptation, himself included, the Lord always gives us a way out.”Joining Bishop Beacham was IPHC Missionary Jasmine Chrilly.“Bishop Beacham and Jasmine Chrilly had a way about them that made

me feel so sure The Lord was beside them,” said Saron Williamson, junior psychology major. “They had such a contagious peace; it made me want what they have.”

Born in New Zealand and raised in Perth, Australia, Chrilly was sent as a missionary by IPHC Australia in 2008 to IPHC NW Europe and has been serving under the Regional Director of NW-Europe, Harold Presley (‘76, ‘78), for more than five years.

“It was great to have someone come in and speak about ministry from another perspective, especially about cross-cultural ministry,” said Marcus Abernathy, junior Christian Ministries major. “It was a topic that helped me a lot, and showed me how to better relate to others.”

President’s Reception

Dr. Cheryl Bridges Johns receives G. Earl Beatty Servant Leadership Award

EC’s School of Christian Ministries honored Dr. Cheryl Bridges Johns (’73) with the G. Earl Beatty Servant Leadership Award during Homecoming Weekend 2013.

This honors her exemplary servant leadership as she has led through serving the

body of Christ in the local church, in academia, and in ecumenical and creation care initiatives.

Dr. Johns holds a B.A. from Lee College, an M.A. from

Wheaton College, and a Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She has served as president of the Society for Pentecostal Studies in the past and has been a professor of Discipleship and Christian Formation since 1985. She currently teaches at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary in Cleveland, Tenn., and has taught at Lee University, Northwest Bible College, the Church of God Theological Seminary, and other institutions and churches worldwide. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Association of Theological Schools in America and Canada while also serving on boards such as Evangelicals for Human Rights, the Evangelical Partnership for the Common Good, and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture.

Dr. Johns actively participates in creation care initiatives such as “Scientists and Evangelicals Initiative on the Care of Creation” and ecumenical initiatives, including the Roman Catholic-Pentecostal Dialogue, Evangelicals and Catholics Together, and the Church of God-Mennonite Dialogue. She has also represented the Wesleyan-Pentecostal tradition with the World Council of Churches and Faith and Order for the National Council of Churches.

Her published works include more than three dozen articles in scholarly and religious publications along with two books: Pentecostal Formation: A Pedagogy Among the Oppressed and Finding Eternal Treasures. In 2012, the Church of God awarded her the Distinguished Educator Award for Faculty. She and her husband, Jackie, co-pastor the New Covenant Church of God, which they planted in 1989.

Stephens Fields are new home to EC’s soccer and lacrosse teams

The home field location for Emmanuel’s men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams just moved even closer to home.

Stephens Fields, named for Gerald and Jean Stephens from Morganton, N.C., were dedicated during a special ribbon cutting ceremony during Homecoming Weekend 2013.

“As James 1:17 says, ‘Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above’,” Mr. Stephens said. “It’s important to Jean and me that everybody understands we are only the conduits for this gift, and it’s to glorify the Father and not us.”

Mr. Stephens became a member of the Board of Trustees two years ago, but they have a long-time connection with the College. “We have always loved it and are privileged to be a part of it,” he added.

Now located beside the one-year-old Shaw Athletic Center, Stephens Fields sit on a 40-acre land tract the College purchased years ago in anticipation of future expansion.

For the past two years during other building projects, EC’s teams have practiced and played in nearby Carnesville.

“It has been wonderful to be able to walk back home after practice,” EC Women’s Soccer Head Coach Forrest Wimberly said. “This extra time right before and after practice provides us another opportunity to talk and minister to our players.”

As Brian James, EC’s Vice President for Development, welcomed the crowd to the ceremony, he thanked Mr. and Mrs. Stephens for their vision, support and willingness to help in accomplishing this.

“This is a big project,” James said. “It’s six and a half acres of sod! It’s been a big project, but the Lord has helped us. We are expanding the campus, and, as a result, we are able to reach more lives than we’ve ever reached before for the Kingdom of Jesus Christ,” he said.

President Michael Stewart said board members occasionally reconsidered the purchase of that land and at times wondered if they should sell it.

“As God began to move and expand our campus and as our student body increased, we knew there was a need for this property,” President Stewart said.

This is an encouraging season at EC and a good example of how experiencing Emmanuel means more than just a place, a game or a degree.

EC proudly named Dr. H. Vinson Synan (‘55) as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year 2013 on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the 94th Annual Homecoming Weekend.

Dr. Synan is Dean Emeritus at the School of Divinity at Regent University in Virginia. He is considered to be the most noted historian of the Pentecostal and Charismatic Movement and is a well-respected leader in the wider Charismatic Movement. He was the organizing founder of the Society for Pentecostal Studies in 1970 and has given institutional shape to Pentecostal research.

“Dr. Synan, thank you for all you have done for Emmanuel College and for the monumental

contributions you have made in our Pentecostal and evangelical heritage,” President Michael Stewart said during the presentation. “You are an inspiration, and today we are honored and proud to present this award to you as our 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.”

Dr. Synan has served in the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC) as general secretary, assistant general superintendent, and director of evangelism.

He has published 19 books—among them is the Holiness-Pentecostal Movement published in 1971, which was one of the few early scholarly treatments of Pentecostalism and is still a significant work about the origins of American Pentecostalism.

Dr. Synan graduated from Emmanuel in 1955. He also began his teaching career at EC and served on faculty from 1962-1975. During that time, he was a graduate student at the University of Georgia, where he earned his Ph.D. in U.S. Social & Intellectual History in 1967. Just two years ago, Dr. Synan was back on EC’s campus to teach a course in Pentecostal/Charismatic History in four weekend sessions. He was ordained as an IPHC minister in 1954 and served as the pastor of the Hartwell PHC during his years on EC’s faculty.

As he received the crystal plaque from President Stewart, he shared these comments:

“I first came to EC out of high school 60 years ago in 1953,” Dr. Synan explained. “The first job my twin brother Vernon and I were given was to dig a water line for the girl’s dorm through solid rock with

pickaxes. It was like being on a chain gang.

“However, while I was here I had great teachers, such as Dr. Cub Melton and Ruth Tew in history, John Swails in Bible, and Dorothy Poteat in English. I always wanted to teach history like Dr. Melton.

“Also, Miss Poteat had me produce my very first publication. It was the one page history of E.C. in the College Catalog. It ran for several years,” he said.

“My first published book was done here as my M.A. thesis at the University of Georgia. It was titled Emmanuel College: the First Fifty Years. I also researched and wrote my Ph.D. dissertation while teaching at E.C. This book, The Holiness-Pentecostal Movement in the United States, opened all the doors for my future career. I thank God for Emmanuel College and the stupendous progress it has made. The future will be much greater than the past. Thank you for this very high honor,” he concluded.

Dr. Synan and his wife Carol have been married 53 years and have four children.

Thank you, IPHC Women’s Ministries, for your gift of $72,000 toward EC student scholarships at this year’s 66th Annual Feast of Ingathering on October 4, 2013.

This is such an important investment in shaping our future IPHC leaders.

“Because of the myriad of scholarships Emmanuel offers and the providence of God, I have been able to attend debt free!” said Michael Callicutt, senior pre-law major.

Nearly 100 of EC’s Golden Grads gathered to enjoy fellowship and breakfast Saturday morning of Homecoming Weekend 2013. Congratulations to the Class of 1963 who were inducted this year.

The athletic center at Emmanuel College, which opened one year ago, is now named for Jack and Jane Shaw during a special ceremony on a warm, sunny afternoon on Saturday, Oct. 5, at EC’s 94th Annual Homecoming Weekend 2013.

The official name is the Jack and Jane Shaw Athletic Center – to exalt Jesus Christ.Jack and Jane Shaw are long time supporters of student scholarships and educational

institutions, including Emmanuel College. They have had a distinguished career in real estate development, property management and investing. Today, Mr. Shaw is Chairman and CEO of Shaw Resources in Greenville, S.C.

“Jack and Jane have served in a number of influential roles over the years,” President Michael Stewart said during the ceremony. “They are people with a clear purpose, and they have invested their lives into fulfilling the calling God has had on their lives with their family, community and business.”

Mr. Shaw was the first in his family to graduate from college and was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Emmanuel College in 1951 when it was still only a high school called Franklin Springs Institute. He later served on EC’s Board of Trustees and was also board chair. He served fours years as president of EC’s National Alumni Association. He and Mrs. Shaw were the primary contributors when EC built its current library, which is called the Shaw-Leslie Learning Resources Center.

“I would not be the person I am today had it not been for the sacrifice of the faculty and staff who poured of themselves into my life. My dreams, my hopes, my life are embedded in that foundation for which I am debtor to many people,” he said.

In addition to his work as an accomplished speaker, teacher, lecturer and mentor, Mr. Shaw was elected to the South Carolina General Assembly. He has served as trustee and chairman of the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center Board of Trustees, member of the Clemson University Foundation Board, member of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, member of the Southern Baptist Foundation’s Board of Trustees, the Greenville Community Foundation Board, and the Greenville Tech Foundation Entrepreneur’s Forum, as well as the Board of Regents of Oral Roberts University. He has also served on the Samaritan’s Purse Board, the World Medical Missions Board, and Holmes Bible College Board of Trustees.

“Many people who will come here you won’t see in church. Their only Bible is the sports page. Their church is an arena, an athletic center. What an opportunity this presents for Emmanuel. Through the medium of sports and the events that take place here, may we be among those who take the Gospel into everyone’s world by planting ‘the good seed’,” he challenged.

Valedictorians honored

As this year’s Homecoming Weekend placed the spotlight on academics, Emmanuel College honored alumni valedictorians at a special reception with President Michael Stewart on Saturday morning.

Mrs. Courtney Hamil, the Class of 2012 valedictorian for the bachelor’s programs, welcomed guests to the breakfast reception. Next, Mrs. Jennifer Lester Benson, who is the Dean of the School of Business and the Communication Department Chair, shared about why our faculty teach—they are answering the call on their lives! “It is a pleasure to have students like you in our classes,” she said.

President Michael Stewart honored their accomplishments and also recognized certain individuals:

• the earliest year represented was Mr. Jack Shaw, Class of 1951 (high school),

• the most recent year represented was 2012 with Mrs. Courtney Hamil (bachelor’s level) and Mr. Gordan Grizzle (associate’s level),

• each graduate by decade,• graduates from Franklin Springs Institute

(high school) as well as Emmanuel College, and

• the parent-child valedictorians, which include Malcolm (‘59) and Ronald Herndon (‘81), and Sara (‘56) and Bill (‘82) Wood.

Dr. John Henzel, Vice President for Academic Affairs, recognized EC faculty who were present and were also EC valedictorians:

• Mr. Malcolm Herndon (taught mathematics at EC; retired),

• Dr. Tony Moon (Professor, School of Christian Ministries),

• Mrs. Joyce Cheek (taught mathematics at EC), and

• Mrs. Berthine Langford (taught biology at EC).

Valedictorians who were present were each awarded a medallion and each took a moment to share a special memory of what Emmanuel College has meant to them.

1960sCongratulations to John (’61) and Faye (’56) Hedgepeth! On August 4, 2013, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and he was honored for serving for 45 years as pastor of Northwood Temple in Fayetteville, N.C.

“Buck’s Dynasty”Nearly 40 alumni enjoyed a dinner

theater production of “Buck’s Dynasty,” written and produced by Rodney “Buck” Hodge (’68), at Northwood Temple in Fayetteville, N.C., on October 12, 2013.

Among those pictured is Marian Jamerson Cooper (front center) who attended high school 1940-44 at Emmanuel, where she also met her husband Allie. Their daughter Susan also graduated from EC in 1968.

Lee Hughes Synan (’48) passed away October 16, 2013. She was happily married to Joseph Alexander Synan Jr. for 56 years before he passed away. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law and many other loving family members.

Levon Calvin Register Sr. (’49) passed away August 13, 2013. He was a CPA, attended Franklin Springs PHC, was a member of the Emmanuel College Board for 35 years, and was a United States Navy Veteran. His service was officiated by former Emmanuel President C. Y. Melton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elmaise Turnage Register, and is survived by many loving family members, children and their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rev. Willis C. Fortson (’56) passed away September 26, 2013. He worked for Delta Airlines for 28 years and was the pastor of Mountain Gap PHC. He is survived by Elma, his wife of 48 years, as well as two sons and their spouses, grandchildren, and other loving family members.
