Bridging the Gap

George Quinlan, Jr

For the last several years, I have had the opportunity to serve on a very special board, the Music Achievement Council. The council was established several decades ago as a joint project between instrument manufacturers, publishers, retailers, and NAMM. Consulting with leading educators, the Council has pro-vided tools to assist in recruiting and retaining instrumental music students. The “Practical Guide to Recruiting & Retention” and “First Performance” tools have been a staple for most school districts for decades. A few years ago, a focus group of select B&O directors from the area was formed to evaluate and probe deeper into the retention area. Thanks to Glen

Schneider, Bryan Ames, Rita Feuer-

born, Lori Lauff & Bryan Itzkowitz

for serving on this panel and to Marcia

Neel who interviewed countless band & orchestra direc-tors to harvest the “best prac-tices” to retain these students. As a result, the newest publica-tion “Bridging the Gap be-tween Middle School and High School” is now available.

And...the best part? It’s FREE for downloading by visiting: http://www.nammfoundation.org/music-achievement-council/downloads

************************ We are very excited to be expanding in Lafayette, Indiana this spring. This region boasts some of the finest band & orchestra programs and we are delighted to have a local presence to serve these programs better. The addition of Ed

Warren as an educational rep. in Michi-gan is exciting as well to meet the grow-ing demand in that area as well.

Spring is FINALLY here!!! It means many different things to all of us. Con-cert band Contest, Graduation music, spring concerts, the end of the competi-tive winter percussion season, beginner recruiting, mowing your lawn, and hopefully some tee times mixed in somewhere! After the worst winter many of us have endured in over 35 years, i t’s a very welcome change….even if you are still teaching on an extended day, and missing some of those extra days off. Either way, summer will be here before we know it!

Winter Season Recap: This past com-

petitive winter “season” saw a record number of competitive Scho-lastic percussion groups. Not only on Indiana’s IPA

circuit, but also the national WGI stage. At times, this activity can become an off season Hot Button topic. (“Too much

emphasis on marching beyond the fall.”

Or “It takes too many performers away

from my Concert or Jazz programs”.) Most all are valid points, and what it boils down to is that it’s not for all pro-

grams. I’ve seen some schools open up winter auditions to non-music students, and inadvertently grow the size of their music program. Others have limited it to an internal clinic style activity. Of course, others have grown the size of their percussion programs into a formi-dable learning opportunity that has enriched many a performer & some-times shaped future educators! Whether its just a Concert Class group, or a full blown Movement venture, the activity can have many benefits beyond what is initially assumed.

Percussion Product Spotlight: Inno-vative Percussion continues to expand, and improve, their line of sticks and mal-lets. In particular they have recently introduced a Hy-

brid Stick (IP-HB) which crosses over very well from Concert Snare to Drum

Set. Innovative has also created an extensive selection of Timpani Mallets. In particular The Field Series have a very durable synthetic felt. They bal-

ance very well, and are price competitive with the usual Vic Firth Corpmaster models many are familiar with. (IP-FST2 & T4)

Currently at Q&F….. We are now of-fering student level Marimbas & Xylo-phones at a Student Rental price point. Only $59 per month! This means you can rent to own your very own full size key-board for home practice, instead of being limited to only practic-ing at school. Play more, get better, be better!

Lastly… I can never stress this enough: As always, don’t forget your ear protec-tion…. And don’t forget to remind our students too!!! Not just for drummers, but ALL players. I hope you heard me!

special uniform for this concert, so dress comfortably yet look nice for the crowd that gathers. Oh, and don’t forget your music stand – and clothespins! There is something else to bring too. Bring a former student or two, or three,

or…that is the reason for the concert - A chance for people who used to play to join in for a quick rehearsal and concert. Most pieces selected will be familiar to anyone who has played in their high school orchestra. My not so hidden agenda for this day is to pay tribute to our public school or-chestra teachers and the effect you have on a community and how you affect your students by sharing your passion for or-chestral playing. A passion so strong it will get you out of bed for an early downtown Chicago RISE AND SHINE

ORCHESTRA!

I’ll be counting on your “get-er-done” attitude and experience to make it all unfold like nothing anyone has seen. Your efforts last year are memorable and have inspired much to happen within the Rush Hour organization in support of orchestral education opportunities such as the program of music instruction in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. BRAVO! Let’s continue to inspire by playing in the Rise and Shine Orchestra 2014.

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company

stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello, serving as

clinician and consultant for musical instrument and educational organizations, and

countless hours of working with students and parents to assist in selecting the best

instrument for their needs. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by

appointment to individually help you and your students find just the right instru-

ment. You’ll see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of

America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy,

where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available from all

over the world! Travels to the countries of origin and hand selecting the instruments

and bows to be included in our showrooms make our instruments among the best available today. We maintain a vigilant effort to assure our custom-

ers that Quinlan and Fabish Strings are always known for their value and quality.

MONTELEONE – MONDOMUSICA

NEW YORK Last week the Big Apple hosted “MondoMusica” which is the New York version of a festival which takes place every October in Cremona, Italy- the home of Stradivarius. Luthiers and ven-dors from all over the world gather to display instruments made by makers from all over the world including some rare instruments by the Masters. While there I was able to select several new Monteleone instruments for our showrooms. Excellent craftsmanship and consistently offering rich, full tone, the Monteleone instruments are our most popular. Noticeably, the violas have taken on a devoted following. The tone is full and vibrant with strong projection yet they have the rich, darker qualities many violists are looking for in their instrument. Monteleone easily competes with instruments selling at twice their price. This is what I refer to when I mention the value of Quinlan and Fabish strings - Honest quality at fair prices.

LAFAYETTE – WE ARE HERE!

This month our new store opens in La-fayette, Indiana and it is exciting to be able to offer the Quinlan & Fabish qual-ity of service to that community. Over the years, I’ve known many string play-ers there and look forward to offering them and their students our fantastic se-lection of stringed instruments. I recently purchased instruments while in NY for the Lafayette showroom.

MAKE MUSIC CHICAGO

JUNE 21 – DALEY PLAZA

Join hundreds of fellow musicians in the Fourth annual citywide Make Music Chi-cago festival on Saturday, June 21 2014,

celebrating everyone's ability to make music. Last year, seventy-five volun-teer violinists, violists, cellists, and bassists showed up at the iconic Daley Plaza for the Rise and Shine Orchestra and performed a concert free to the public. This year we are going to be a full symphony orchestra and already have enough winds, brass, and percus-sionists to consider it possible. But, we need more. The goal this year is to go BIG. Here’s why...in the 1890's, Chicago and Cin-cinnati were competing to be the cul-tural center of the Midwest. One city would have a music festival and then the other city would have to have one larger. This went on to the point where there is a picture showing a chorus of 1000 and an orchestra of 300 perform-ing in a music hall constructed for the event along the lakefront. If, in 1890, 300 Chicago area musicians could form an orchestra and perform at a venue downtown, why can't we! The citizens of the 1890’s thought to hire Theodore

Thomas to form the Chicago Sym-

phony Orchestra from which we all have benefited. Several musicians of the CSO will be performing with us again this year! Paul Phillips, CSO first violinist, will perform Czardas with us and we will play Hoedown from Rodeo and other fun popular clas-sics of similar nature. Along with Paul, Blair Milton, Nisi Howell, and Bar-

bara Queen have agreed to play again this year! WOW! Join them! Sign up o n l i n e t o d a y a n d v i s i t www.MakeMusicChicago.com Rehearsal starts at 9:00AM and it is downtown Chicago. The concert is at 10:00AM so you need to be dressed and ready for a public performance. No

The movie Frozen is a hit! Some of the most popular titles are Let It Go, written

by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. This song is arranged for various levels of concert band, string or-chestra, marching band and jazz band. Music from Fro-

zen and Highlights from

Frozen are also very popular titles ar-ranged for various levels of concert band, string orchestra marching band and jazz band. Cutting no corners, Hal Leonard has even produced a Frozen themed, wide staffed manuscript paper book. But the Frozen train doesn’t stop there. In June, be on the look out for a new instrumental folio from Hal Leonard. The folio will contain musical selections from Disney’s most recent hits, including “Frozen”, “ T a n g l e d ” a n d “Enchanted”. These “sure to be popular” folios will be available for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, f horn, trom-bone, violin, viola and cello. Hal Leonard delivers this spring with a young band version of Cups (When I’m

Gone) as performed by Anna Kendrick in the movie Pitch Perfect. Originally composed by A.P. Carter, Luisa Gerstein and Heloise Tunstall-Behrens, this piece has been arranged for young band by Johnnie Vinson. The movie is about

several college a cappella groups and dif-ferent competitions they perform in, as well as the personal and musical growth of the singers. The song Cups is introduced as an audition piece with the singer (Anna Kendrick) performing the rhythm with a single plastic cup on the stage. The young band version is written with bongos as the “cup” part, but can be performed on other instruments, such as wood block or temple block, as well. However, if one or more of

your students is able to play the cup part, it would create a great visual aspect to have them in front of the band “playing the cup”. This piece is lyrical and relax-ing; a pleasure for musicians to play and audiences to listen to. It also introduces students to the notion that anything can be a “musical instrument”. Alfred brings us a new Belwin Band piece for young bands to add to the clas-sical-pop genre. Two by George fea-tures a relaxed version of “I Got Rhythm” from the musical Girl Crazy and a march style piece entitle “Strike Up the Band!” from the musical of the same name. Both mu-sicals written by George and Ira Gershwin are well known and come together nicely to create a fun and creative piece. Arranged by Jason Scott for young band, the melodies are separated by a caesura. This pause can be long or short depend-ing on how the director would like to present the piece; as two connected but different themes, or two movements in the one piece. This is a piece that can be enjoyed by all, whether it is a student just beginning to explore music, or an audience member able to sing along, it will be a hit in any concert. Another exciting Belwin Band piece from Alfred is At the Movies with

Hans Zimmer, arranged for intermedi-ate concert band by Justin Williams. This piece features some of Zimmer’s newer works. Melodies featured in this piece in-clude “Look to the Stars” from Man of Steel, “Dream is Collapsing” from Incep-

tion and “Rise” from Bat-

man: The Dark Knight

Rises. These melodies come from a well known and awarded Hollywood com-poser. Zimmer has been awarded four Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes, a

Classic BRIT award and an Academy Award over three decades and over 100 films. Williams arranged a tour de force of familiar and dramatic pieces from Zimmer in an emotional soundtrack col-lection of Zimmer’s moods and ambi-ence. This piece is sure to be enjoyed by all who hear and play it. And lets not forget that Marching band season is right around the corner. Hal Leonard and Alfred have started to re-lease their marching band music for the upcoming season. Happy (from Despi-

cable Me 2), published by Hal Leonard, is bound to be a smash hit on the field. This wildly popular upbeat tune by artist Pharrell, was written by the artist Pharrell Williams and arranged for marching band by Ishbah Cox. This song is makes anyone who hears it want to dance and get happy. It has been the inspiration of many a YouTube video of people danc-ing and being happy to this song. When played on the field, it may start a “happy” craze in your stands! Alfred released a three piece halftime show based on Man of Steel. Hans Zimmer is quickly becoming one of the most important film composers of our time. His music is moving and versatile and always tells the story. In the three piece show Part 1 features “Look to the Stars” and “If you Love these People”, Part 2 features “Goodbye My Son” and Part 3 features “Oil Rig” and “What are You go-ing to do when You are not saving the World?”. All parts are arranged by Mike Story making the three components of the show cohesive. Any fan of Superman will be thrilled and players and audiences alike are sure to be captivated by this stunning work.

The Story Behind JUNO reeds by Vandoren

My First Vandoren...Available for Bb Clarinet, Alto Sax and Tenor Sax, JUNO has been designed with the stu-dent in mind. It’s very important that student reeds are responsive so that beginners can make a sound immedi-ately. The challenge has always been how to make the reed sound good as well as make it easy to play. Ber-nard Van Doren has wanted to make a reed that stu-dents could use and experience early success. He knew if he could design one, he could help thousands of begin-ners experience the magic of that first note. In Van-doren’s 108-year history, they have never comprised quality, which is why Vandoren is the choice of profes-sionals around the world. So why hasn’t Vandoren made a student reed sooner? The issue was they did not have the technology to create such a reed that beginning stu-

dents and parents would appreciate. With the advent of laser analysis, video selection and other key innovations, the day arrived where Bernard’s dream of a reed specifically designed for beginners could happen. “So many people told me over the years that there was no reed for the beginner,” commented Mr. Van Doren. “It seemed curious to me that the only issue with reeds for beginners was cost while to me it was a matter of perform-ance. I am proud we could finally create this very special reed for beginners.” Made from cane grown in the Mediterranean basin, the reeds are cut with a unique profile, which is why even though these reeds are easier to play; they still retain the sound of a Vandoren. The advanced technology Vandoren uses al-lows the company to cut the JUNO reed in significantly less time than is does to create the other more complex Van-doren reeds. The shorter cutting time plus the other cost savings associated with using the same packaging and pro-tectors as Vandoren products all adds up to a cost effective reed that out performs all other reeds at any price point for a beginning student. Once they are precisely cut, each reed is sealed in its own humidity balanced Flow Pack where it waits for you. That way, when you take a JUNO reed out of the box, it feels and sounds as fresh as the day it was made. “This is a Vandoren reed,” continued Mr. Van Doren. “It’s a select reed for students. It gives them a chance to succeed from the beginning, which for band directors and parents is very important. Vandoren is the first reed com-pany to think about performance first for these young students.” You may have already tried some JUNO reeds since Quinlan & Fabish was one of the first JUNO dealers in the United States. The responses from band directors have been unanimous. Here are some quotes:

Juno reeds are just that extra bit of encouragement that your select beginning band student may need to become successful on their instrument and stay in band. They decrease frustration and increase a stu-

dent's desire to practice. The reeds are available in a variety of sizes so you may even transition the student up into regular reeds through Juno's other sizes or completely change over once the student

is ready. Phil Robb - Richland School District 88

I was instantly impressed with the quality of sound produced by the reeds. A good quality reed can make all the difference in a beginner's first experiences with his/her new instrument. Jennifer Rooney - Union Ridge School District 86
