The Saints & Sinners: Bootleggers’ Run Trail map is your passport to beer, wine and cider producers around south Georgian Bay. The area was once a

hotbed for bootleggers during Prohibition. Today it boasts imaginative producers who use local hops, apples and grapes to create award-winning products.

Home to the largest concentration of

Apples to Zucchini. From Cooper’s Hawk

produced Canadian whisky, Windsor-Essex

has plenty of reasons to visit.

Grow Strong Where You’re PlantedGrey County – known for great skiing, hiking, cycling and paddling – is also an emerging food and drink destination. Built on sweet limestone soils and clean water, local farms excel in raising lamb, apples, trout, beef and more. All are used in restaurants across the region as Grey County chefs embrace the farm-to-table

ethos. They know that fresh foods taste best and that buying direct from neighbouring farms deepens community bonds and economic resilience. Enjoy 11 stops on the saints & sinners Trail, Feast oN designated restaurants, and other hand-picked local favourites when you visit.

Even more to taste and see: craft distilleries, cideries and breweries – experience tours, tastings & tap rooms

Ontario and its Greenbelt have always been an ideal place to grow hops, so perfect that discreet patches of hops from prohibition era farms still survive 100 years later! Due partly to a worldwide hop shortage, but also to the popularity of the local food and beverage movement, 2007 saw the emergence of a new generation of Ontario hop farmers. And they are busy keeping up with the demands of locally minded craft brewers, who use up to 10 times the amount of hops than in standard brews from larger breweries.

It’s just as well that ontario’s high quality hops can grow up to 12 inches a day in peak season! Find out more at http://www.ontariohopgrowersassociation.ca or at Harvest Hop and Malt on Discovery Route 1 (Hamilton).

Innovative local food partnerships bringing

communities together

Take, for example, the Old Flame Brewing

Co. in historic downtown Port Perry. They

send their “spent grain” to local yellowlees

Family Farm, the sheep are fed the grain,

the lamb meat goes to a local butcher,

Herrington’s, where they make beer infused

Lamb and Lager pies. Spent grain is used

to make Port Perry’s famous hanks pastries

and old Flame’s Maple Walnut stout is made

with maple syrup from Willowtree Farm.

* Call ahead for tour availability as business and tour hours are subject to change. Please consult websites for weekday hours.

A renewed commitment to local, and ideal conditions for cider apples in Ontario and its protected Greenbelt, have encouraged the establishment of 23 world class cideries who have come together as part of the Ontario Craft Cider Association.

OCCA ciders win medals at the world’s biggest competitions, using the juice from only 100% Ontario apples and pears. We are creating hundreds of environmentally responsible jobs and building communities throughout rural Ontario.

Enjoy free tastings or a cider/cheese pairing at a Greenbelt cidery and learn more about this naturally fermented beverage that refreshed our pioneering forebears.

Cider is the fastest growing category of alcohol in Ontario, let’s keep it deliciously local.
