Smith Travel Report 2015

The ci es of Be endorf, Davenport, Moline, and Rock Island agreed to fund the QCCVB based on equal percentages of hotel/motel tax contribu ons collected within each city. The current funding level is 25%. Davenport hotel/motel taxes were authorized in 1987 by referendum to provide sustainable funds to market the city to visitors and benefit from the expenditures made by visitors as well as the other taxes visitors generate. Visitors also create revenue through sales taxes, motor fuel taxes, car rental taxes and fees, food and beverage taxes and others. Much of the impetus of the crea on of the QCCVB in 1990 was the realiza on by the ci es that pooling their hotel/motel taxes to market the en re region was a more aggressive and effec ve way to invest those taxes. Hotel/motel taxes in the Quad Ci es con nue to rise because there are more hotel rooms, more visitors staying longer in hotel rooms, and higher average daily rates—all of which create higher hotel/motel taxes for the city coffers.

LOOKING AHEAD...

RIVER CRUISING The QCCVB welcomes over 3,200 riverboat passengers annually. The QCCVB sales team creates the tour and transporta on needs for the American Queen visits, and Visitor Services organizes the guided hop‐on/hop‐off shu le service. There are four docking dates scheduled for 2016. Viking River Cruises contacted the QCCVB sales team in 2012 to begin discussion on exclusive touring op ons for their passengers with the new cruises on the Mississippi River. The QCCVB sales team connected Viking River Cruises with the Davenport Mayor in 2013 to discuss the port docking loca ons and specific Viking requirements.

MOVE UP FROM A WHISPER Addi onal funding would make the Quad Ci es more compe ve and armed to secure addi onal mee ng and conven on business. Mee ng planners o en require waiving mee ng room rental fees, waiving labor costs in conven on centers, adding transporta on from overflow hotels to the conven on center, and/or bid fees to earn the business. Iowa City and Des Moines have this advantage over the Quad Ci es currently.

Addi onal funding will help keep Davenport in front of mee ng planners and sports event marketers. The QCCVB has historically a ended eight trade shows per year. Currently the QCCVB is down to two. That is 1,688 fewer planners that the QCCVB will not meet face to face in 2016.

Addi onal funding would mean more adver sing for the Quad Ci es to compete with other des na ons. The QCCVB has historically placed $300K in adver sing. Currently the QCCVB has only a $50K ad budget due to funding cuts. More ads could run in Chicago, southern Wisc., and trade publica ons.

Addi onal funding would mean more travel journalists able to visit resul ng in increased media coverage. The QCCVB is hampered by not being able to pay for a travel journalist’s travel to the Quad Ci es.

Addi onal funding could improve downtown wayfinding signage to include restaurants and retail.

RHYTHM CITY CASINO RESORT The Rhythm City Casino Resort will be moving in May 2016. The new facility includes four restaurants, a 1,500 seat entertainment venue, day spa, event center with sea ng up to 600, and gaming at one of the 800 slot machines or 35 table games. New venues are always popular, and 106 new hotel rooms will be added to the Quad Ci es inventory.
