The Village of East Davenport, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, is a sixty square block district, first established in 1851 as a logging town. The first saw mill was owned and operated by Robert Christie who built a mansion ( ) on the hill above the Village so he could have a view of the river and his operations without having to always be down in the heart of the action. Saw mills soon lined the river’s edge from Bridge Avenue to the eddy at the foot of Mound Street. Logs from the northern forests were rafted to the sawmills of the Village and carried as far west as Denver on the newly built railroad. Until 1904, lumbering was the basis for the Village’s economy, but depleted forests and a disastrous riverfront fire in the lumber mills that lined the river’s edge ended the era of logging in the Village. Welcome! to the Village of East Davenport – a quaint historic shopping district located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The Village is the perfect place to spend the day with your family and friends. Experience the true essence of “Main Street America” where local shop owners greet you with a warm smile, offer impeccable service, and love getting to know their customers. Spend the day strolling down the streets and browsing the unique stores. Recharge your batteries with a bite to eat or a refreshment in one of the wonderful eateries or watering holes, then shop some more! Leave the hustle and bustle of the malls behind you! In the Village, you’ll find the time to smell the flowers in the parks, breathe in the fresh air of outdoor shopping, and enjoy friendly conversation. See you soon!
