The Bettendorf Rotary Club News March 5, 2008. Guests Welcome at our next meeting, Wed., March 10, 2008 Noon at the Fortune Garden. Featuring: QC Arts, David Sanchez, Jazz Saxophone Latin Grammy Award winner David Sánchez brings his tenor saxophone to play a lunch-hour jazz concert for members of the Bettendorf Rotary on March 5. His appearance is part of the visiting artists program of Quad-City Arts. Sánchez is being hailed as “the most profound young tenor saxophonist working today.” He has received glowing acclaim from critics, music lovers and fellow artists throughout the world as he continues to push the frontiers of mainstream jazz to incorporate a compelling and rich array of Latin and Afro- Caribbean influences, while remaining true to the tenets of the jazz genre. The Departure, his 1995 debut album for Columbia, gained critical kudos as did the disc’s successors Sketches of Dreams, and Street Scenes. Meanwhile, David had begun touring with various jazz greats such as Kenny Barron, Roy Haynes and legendary drummer Elvin Jones. When he returned to the studio for his next project, the result was Obsesión, produced by Branford Marsalis, which garnered him his first Grammy nomination. He followed that album with the Grammy-nominated (and Latin Grammy- nominated) Melaza. In 2001, Sánchez appeared on high-profile recordings with bassist Charlie Haden (Nocturne) and trombonist Steve Turre (TNT [Trombone-N-Tenor]) before issuing another Grammy-nominated release on Columbia, Travesía, which also garnered rave reviews from jazz fans. Born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Sánchez began playing percussion and drums at age 8 before migrating to tenor saxophone four years later. While a student at the prestigious La Escuela Libre de Música in San Juan, he also took up soprano and alto saxophones as well as flute and clarinet. David and his trio will give a full-length public performance on Saturday, March 15 at the Adler Theatre in Davenport. The 7 p.m. performance is free; donations will be collected at the door. The concert wraps up a two-week Visiting Artist Series March 3-15. – By Fred Anderson The Bettendorf Rotary Club News March 5, 2008, Page 1 of 6

Happy Birthday to Ralph Heninger, Dave Falk and Rich James

Lora Adams Presented “The News”…. “What was he thinking”? Police arrested an Illinois man, Robert Kadera’s, for landing his plane (Piper PA-16 Clipper) on a golf course without permission, so that his son wouldn’t be late for a tennis lesson. Robert parked his plane across the street hoping no one would notice, and he was shocked when confronted by the police.

Eric Weiler, Director of Development, Goodwill Industries

March 5th speaker was Eric Weiler, he gave a presentation about the growth of Goodwill Industries and programs to

help homeless veterans in the Quad-City area. Goodwill Industries is North America’s leading nonprofit provider of education, training and career services for people with disadvantages, such as welfare dependency, homelessness and lack of education or work experience, and those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Last year, local Goodwill stores collectively provided employment and training services to more than 930,775 individuals.

Donated clothing and household goods are sold in more than 2,100 Goodwill retail stores and on the Internet auction site, www.shopgoodwill.com. The revenues fund job training and other services to prepare people for job success. More than 83 percent of Goodwill’s total revenues are used to fund education and career services, and other critical community programs. Goodwill was founded in 1902 in Boston by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and early social innovator. Helms collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired those who were poor to mend and repair the used goods. The goods were then resold or were given to the people who repaired them. The system worked, and the Goodwill philosophy of “a hand up, not a handout” was born.

Two local directors discussed their rolls with Goodwill Paulette on the left: Works with homeless Veterans.

Stephanie on the right: Works with schools and career connections.
