India opposes move to change Gilgit-Baltistan legal status

reported move to declare Gilgit (Pakistan) as

that country's fifth province.

• Gilgit-Baltistan is a part of Jammu and

Kashmir, but Pakistan illegally occupied it

after Partition in 1947.

• Islamabad later divided the region into two

parts - Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit-

Baltistan.

• According to reports, Pakistan Prime Minister

Imran Khan has approved a proposal to alter

the region's status to that of an interim

province in principle.

Indian, Chinese militaries to conduct joint exercise from December 11

• The Indian and Chinese militaries will be

engaged in a joint military exercise that will

involve tactical level operations in an

international counter insurgency environment.

• The annual Exercise Hand-in-Hand will

commence on December 11 and go on till

December 23 at Chengdu in China.

• The exercise is conducted annually as part of

military diplomacy and interaction between the

armies of India and China.

• Troops from the Indian side have been selected

from 11 SIKHLI of Indian Army while troops

from a unit of Tibetan military district will be

taking part.

ninth edition of the sailing regatta ended with a

HCL Technologies to acquire select software assets from IBM

history of HCL, is expected to close by mid-

2019.

NITI Aayog launches Global Hackathon on Artificial Intelligence

कनकत आयोग ने आकटिकफकशयल इंटेकलजेंस पर ग्लोबल हैिर्ॉन लॉन्च किया

• Government’s premier think-tank NITI Aayog

has partnered with Singapore-based startup on

artificial intelligence Perlin to launch the ‘AI 4

All Global Hackathon’ and is inviting

developers, students, start-ups and companies

to develop AI applications to make significant

positive social and economic impact for India.

• The move is in line with government’s vision

of ‘AI for all’ articulated in the national AI

strategy under which the NITI Aayog has been

organising hackathons to source sustainable,

innovative and technologically-enabled

solutions to address various challenges in the

development space.

• The hackathon will be run two stages with

Stage One ending 15 January 2019 and Stage

Two, which will only include shortlisted

participants from the previous stage, will

conclude on 15 March 2019.

Cabinet approves implementation of Shahpurkandi Dam (National Project)

• The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister

Shri Narendra Modi has

approvedimplementation of Shahpurkandi

Dam Project, Punjab on river Ravi.

• For this, Central Assistance of Rs. 485.38 cr

(for irrigation component) would be provided

over five years from 2018-19 to 2022-23.

• Implementation of this project would help

minimising some of the water of the River

Ravi which at present is going waste through

the Madhopur Headworks downstream to

Pakistan, whereas there is requirement for the

same for use in Punjab and J&K.

• The decision in this regard was taken by the

Union Cabinet, keeping in view the provisions

of the Indus Water Treaty.

• प्रधान मंत्ी श्ी नरेंद्र मोदी िी अध्यक्षता में िें द्रीय

मंकत्मंिल ने रािी नदी पर पंजाब िे शाहपुरिंदी

बांध पररयोजना, अनुमोदन िो मंजूरी दे दी है।

Indus Waters Treaty

• Indus Waters Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 for sharing of Indus waters.

• The Indus Waters Treaty was signed on September 19, 1960 by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal

Nehru and Pakistan's President Ayub Khan.

• The treaty administers how river Indus and its tributaries that flow in both the countries will be

utilised.

• According to the treaty, Beas, Ravi and Sutlej are to be governed by India, while, Indus, Chenab

and Jhelum are to be taken care by Pakistan.

• Though Indus originates from Tibet, China has been kept out of the Treaty. If China decides to stop or

change the flow of the river, it will affect both India and Pakistan.
