2016 Guidelines

1. Purpose and ObjectivesThe Tutor & Clinical or Professional Practice Supervisor Award (TCPS) has been established to recognise and reward individuals who demonstrate how their teaching enhances the engagement and learning of students in the Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences. There are three awards granted each year at the discretion of the Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences, Teaching and Learning Committee. Each winner will receive a certificate and a grant of $1,000.

2. Procedures Scope/Coverage Nomination is open to tutors, clinical or professional practice supervisors who, at the

time of the application, have taught for a minimum of two full semesters in the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences including previous Faculties of Health Sciences & Social & Behavioural Sciences.

Individual applications are required for a Tutor & Clinical or Professional Practice Supervisor Award.

Applications must be submitted using the 2016 application template. Previous winners of Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences and HaBS Tutor Award

are not eligible for re-nomination in this category. Previously unsuccessful applicants of the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences

and HaBS Tutor Award program can re-nominate.

3. Procedures StatementFaculty’s Tutor & Clinical or Professional Practice Supervisor Award is a commitment by the Faculty to recognise, encourage and reward individuals who demonstrate excellence in teaching and supervising students.

4. Selection CriteriaAll nominees will be assessed on the evidence they provide in relation to the following three criteria, which will be given equal consideration by the Selection Committee. The dot points under each criterion are examples only and are not meant to be an exhaustive list of possibilities. These relate to all forms of teaching and support for students e.g. in a clinical setting, tutorial or laboratory.

i. Approaches to the support of learning and teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn.

fostering student development by stimulating curiosity and independence in learning; contributing to the development of students’ critical thinking skills, analytical skills and

scholarly values; encouraging student engagement through the enthusiasm shown for learning and

teaching; inspiring and motivating students through high-level communication, presentation

and interpersonal skills; establishing structures for ongoing interaction with students;

ii. Effective approaches to assessment, feedback and learning support. 

providing timely, worthwhile feedback to students on their learning; fostering the capacity for student self-assessment; implementing effective moderation practices; providing feedback to course coordinator/s on the appropriateness of assessment

and/or feedback. involvement in the coordination and assessment of students on placement programs

in clinical settings.

iii. Respect and support for the development of students as individuals.

participating in the effective and empathetic guidance and advising of students; influencing student academic, social and cultural experience in your teaching

environment; supporting participation, retention and success for students from equity and other

demographic subgroups; assisting international students to participate and achieve success.

5. Applications5.1. Assessing applications

The applications will be assessed on the quality of the statements against the selection criteria and the extent to which there is evidence in the written statement that the contribution has:

5.2. Previously unsuccessful applicants

Previously unsuccessful applicants may provide a revised application, using the current selection criteria, including current evidence to support their claims against the selection criteria. They should take into account any feedback they received on their previous application.

5.3. Applications details

Applicants are required to use the application template. Page limits will be strictly administered. Applicants must adhere to the formatting requirements embedded in the template.

The written statement is two A4 pages in addition to one A4 page for evidence (three pages in total). Page limits will be strictly administered.

The application must be submitted electronically as a Word document. Applications that do not meet these requirements will not be accepted.

5.4. Written statement

Statement addressing the selection criteria

The core element of an application for a Tutor, Clinical or Professional Practice Supervisor is the written statement in which the applicant describes their contribution to student learning by addressing the selection criteria. This section of the written statement is limited to two A4 pages.

Evidence of impact, sustained contribution and recognition

It is essential that the applicant provides evidence in the written statement to support their claims in line with the criteria. Applicants must provide evidence (maximum of one A4 page) in the written statement to support their claims against the criteria. Please do not provide supporting teaching materials.

5.5. Curriculum Vitae

The Curriculum Vitae should outline the applicant’s educational qualifications and career history, positions and experience in higher education.

The Curriculum Vitae is limited to two A4 pages.

5.6. References

Applicants are required to provide the name and contact details of one colleague who agrees to provide the Selection Committee with confidential statements on the applicant’s contribution to student learning against the selection criteria. A reference must be no more than one A4 page.

Applicants are responsible for contacting the nominated referee and requesting that the report be forwarded electronically, preferably as a PDF, to the Senior Academic Administration Officer, Michael Hong ([email protected]) in the Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences by Thursday 29th September 2016. To facilitate the writing of the reference please provide your referees with a draft copy of your application before the due date.

6. Selection ProcedureMembership of the Award Selection Committee comprises the following:

Chair of the Teaching Awards Committee, Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences or nominee

Two members of Teaching and Learning Committee, Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences (nominated by the Associate Dean (Academic))

ITaLI representative or Teaching and Learning Development Manager, Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences

One previous winner of the award

The Selection Committee will refer its recommendations to the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee for endorsement.

7. Presentation of AwardsThe presentation of the Awards to the winners is made at a ceremony each year during the University’s Teaching and Learning week.

8. Terms and ConditionsTutor & Clinical or Professional Practice Supervisor Award (TCPS) are granted on the condition that all monies associated with the award are used to enhance the career of the recipients with emphasis on their teaching career. Award monies will be paid at the beginning of the calendar year immediately following receipt of the award and the money must be spent in the calendar year in which it is received. 

Expenditure is subject to standard University policy and must be authorised by the Head of School or senior financial delegate.
