Fire protection requirements (ch. 6.12) 1/3
The project shall comply with the following CERN Safety rules:• CERN Safety Code E - Fire protection. The following Swiss legislation applies, if not differently stated in CERN Safety Code E:• Swiss Directives on Fire prevention, AEAI
For fire prevention requirements on material, cables, etc. please refer to ch. 6.2 and ch. 6.11.
A fire detection system has to be foreseen (contact GS/ASE). Its design, installation, commissioning, disabling, maintenance, and periodical inspections have to be done according to the Safety Instruction IS 37 - Alarms and alarm systems.

Fire protection requirements (ch. 6.12) 2/3
6.12.1 Fire compartmentsA fire compartmentalization shall be implemented. Typically, the volume of fire compartments should be as small as possible. However, taking into account the low value of fire load density (except for the dump cavern and in the alcove) and the low occupation in the different areas (for maintenance and only during shutdown phases), 4 fire-rated separations equipped with fire doors shall be installed in order to create 3 fire compartments. A separation is to be foreseen between the ECX5 and the connection tunnel, a second separation at the junction cavern, a third one upstream the zone “dump cavern + evacuation tunnel” to the SPS and a last one in the evacuation tunnel that separates the dump tunnel from the SPS. In this way, new compartments “connection tunnel”, “dump tunnel” and “alcove + dump cavern” are created.

6.12.2 EvacuationEvacuation of occupants in case of emergency will be via a tunnel (escape tunnel) connecting the dump tunnel to the SPS. Ideally, from the point of view of fire safety, the tunnel should be at a maximum of 10 m from the exit of the dump cavern, while respecting the constraints of the machine to the outlet in the SPS. To allow for safe evacuation, bridges will be provided where necessary for occupants to move beyond or below the beam pipe.
