  • Kokula, Fran and OllieThis was a children’s program that used puppets. It was originally called Junior Jamboree with one puppeteer, Burr Tillstrom. The first episode was on October 13, 1947. It changed names on November 29, 1948 to Kukula, Fran and Ollie. The program was improvised and had no script each time they would go on air. Fran was the only human on the show. The program was watched by children but the adult audience started to watch more than the children.

  • Bil BairdThis puppeteer was known for his work with Charlemane the Lion. He and his wife, Cora, also performed the puppet act “The Lonely Goatherd” in The Sound of Music. Bil got his love for puppets after his father made him a marionette. He started his own puppet company in 1934 called the Baird Marionettes. The World's Fair was the site of their first performance. The Baird’s son Peter carried on the family business.

    Sailor Bob was a children’s program that aired on WRVA which was based in Richmond and targeted the Central Virginia audience. Bob Griggs had worked as a cameraman for WRVA. The program centered around Sailor Bob, the puppets he created Gilly Gully, Squeeky Mouse, Captain Paddles and Mr. Bluebird and drawing Popeye cartoons.

    This was a 15 minute puppet show that aired on CBS, M-F from August 23, 1948-June 23, 1951. It was performed live. The puppet skits were performed by Hope and Morey Bunin. The show had other puppets that made their appearance. The names of these puppets are Foodini The Great and Pinhead. Those puppets became popular and the show was renamed.
