Captain Kangaroo This was an American children’s television series that aired weekday mornings on CBS from 1955 to 1984. It was the longest-running nationally broadcast children's television program of its day. This show was based on the warm relationship between grandparents and children.

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

This is a educational children’s television series that was created and hosted by Fred Rogers. It first aired in 1968 on PBS. He would speak to the viewers about various topics, taking the viewer on tours of factories, demonstrating experiments, crafts and music and interacting with his friends.

Kokula, Fran and OllieThis was a children’s program that used puppets. It was originally called Junior Jamboree with one puppeteer, Burr Tillstrom. The first episode was on October 13, 1947. It changed names on November 29, 1948 to Kukula, Fran and Ollie. The program was improvised and had no script each time they would go on air. Fran was the only human on the show. The program was watched by children but the adult audience started to watch more than the children.

Bil BairdThis puppeteer was known for his work with Charlemane the Lion. He and his wife, Cora, also performed the puppet act “The Lonely Goatherd” in The Sound of Music. Bil got his love for puppets after his father made him a marionette. He started his own puppet company in 1934 called the Baird Marionettes. The World's Fair was the site of their first performance. The Baird’s son Peter carried on the family business.

Sailor Bob Show

Sailor Bob was a children’s program that aired on WRVA which was based in Richmond and targeted the Central Virginia audience. Bob Griggs had worked as a cameraman for WRVA. The program centered around Sailor Bob, the puppets he created Gilly Gully, Squeeky Mouse, Captain Paddles and Mr. Bluebird and drawing Popeye cartoons.

The Adventures of Lucky Pup

This was a 15 minute puppet show that aired on CBS, M-F from August 23, 1948-June 23, 1951. It was performed live. The puppet skits were performed by Hope and Morey Bunin. The show had other puppets that made their appearance. The names of these puppets are Foodini The Great and Pinhead. Those puppets became popular and the show was renamed.

Howdy Doody This was a children’s television program that was created and produced by E. Roger Muir. The show had a circus and western theme. It was aired between 1947-1960. This show was a pioneer in children’s television programming and set the pattern for many similar shows.

Sesame Street This preschool educational television program was first aired in 1969. In 2019, they reached their 50th season! The main characters of Sesame Street consist of Elmo, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Bert & Ernie, Grover, Count von Count and Oscar the Grouch.

The Muppets The Muppets were created by Jim Henson.They appeared in a television program in 1955 called Sam and Friends. They also started appearing on Late Night television programs and on Sesame Street in 1969. Big Screen movies started being produced with The Muppets. Some of those movies included The Muppet Movie, and The Muppets Take Manhattan.
