Dear Readers:I had it in my head that this month’s editorial would be a list of New Year’s Resolutions I could actually keep. It was going to be hilarious, trust me...but just before I started my list, I

happened upon an article that stopped me in my tracks.

The Vancouver Foundation recently asked people what bothered them most about their city. Their response wasn’t drugs or crime, traffic, or the cost of living... “The biggest issue people had is that they felt lonely, isolated, and unconnected to their communities.” *

Vancouverites aren’t the only ones. Apparently, we are rapidly becoming a nation of people who feel alone...and “alone” is an awful way to feel. Oddly enough, social media isn’t helping, in fact, it may be doing more harm than good. Imagine that.

To counter the problem of ‘lonely’, the Vancouver Foundation has taken the dramatic step of offering a $500 grant to anyone who organizes a community event - a knitting circle, a book launch, a night of caroling, or a marshmallow roast.

I don’t have $500 bucks to offer, but I know the dark days of winter can be lonely and isolating for many. So here’s my challenge to you: Reach out. Your effort doesn’t have to be

monumental, a simple hello and a chat about the weather will do. A smile is fast and free. Organize a card game. Cobble together a game of street hockey. Oh yeah - I went there. I’ll show up with a stick. Invite me!

If you need to make contact with a friendly face, the folks who regularly traverse the Anderson Road off-leash area will always offer up friendly hello. You don’t even have to bring your own dog, you could borrow one of mine!

...or you can organize a more elaborate event, like Glen Richardson. He’s invited a group of people to take part in a 31-day exercise challenge - 1 kilometer a day, every day in January. Taking part earns you an invite to the wrap-up party and a participation ribbon. We’re all busy - but we’re never so busy that we are obligated to be lonely. Reach out, accept an offer, stay connected. Call me. I’ll call you back.

Best, Kari

COFFEETALKIt’s that time again!I have an issue with New Year Resolutions...my issue is that I can’t keep em’! Like most people, I fall back into my old ways of living because of reasons I believe I just can’t control. But I have to admit, that’s a cop out. I just go back to my comfort zone and convince myself that I really didn’t need that positive change in my life anyways. So in denial! I found this amazing article to help us all “Keep ‘our’ Resolutions” so that we stay on course, don’t falter and stay strong. Any change is difficult to accept and work on, but in the end..if you stick with it, many other positives start to flow into your life as well. Good luck everyone! I certainly need it. - Bobbie-Jo Bergner

Keep Your Resolutions!Have you ever made resolutions at New Year’s, only to later watch your resolutions retreat and your dreams dive? Don’t despair. Try these strategies for a truly happy New Year.

Join a group or use the buddy systemListening to each other breeds compassion for every member, for ourselves, and for others who are not part of our circle.

Buddies and groups also provide an environment in which we give immediate feedback on what has been achieved, acknowledge each other for our commitments, help each other tweak our intentions, and challenge each other when we are slipping.

MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER

Consider a life coachCoaching, like the buddy system, keeps resolutions alive by clarifying intentions, making public commitments, reporting on success (or lack thereof), acknowledging success, and in general, keeping our personal-growth conversation alive. Through the process of talking with a life coach, people learn more about their inner workings, and after a period of time they are able to coach themselves.

Take responsibility for your actionsThe first step in planning is to recognize why we did not keep our commitments. This step requires us to fully acknowledge that we are in the driver’s seat of our lives. What kept us from meeting our resolutions was the result of our own decisions and choices.

Use the SMART strategy when goal-settingThe best goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-based.

Other tips: Consider New Year’s resolutions, stated intentions, commitments, stated goals, or whatever you wish to call them, as opportunities to develop crucial life skills such as patience, integrity, honesty, and more.

Don’t let perfectionist values inhibit you. Embrace the aphorism, “A job that’s worth doing is worth doing less than well.” This will help you to overcome fear of failure, and combined with honest self-assessment it will help you learn how you operate when stating intentions.

Concentrate on positive thoughts, not negative ones. Identify your negative thoughts as your mind’s way of playing games with your true self. - Source: alive.com

I did it and you can too.I am just like you, no different. I have gone through ups and downs in life, faced obstac les and cha l lenges , I went through a period of time where I neglected myself and my own hap-piness, while caring for everyone and everything else around me. Those years took their toll on every aspect of my life, my health was badly neglected. Gaining approximately 8-10 lbs every year for several years, suddenly I was 50+ lbs overweight and very unhealthy.

The Chaos that swirled around my life became the way life was for many

years. Until enough was enough. Until the life I was in was no longer one that resembled any part of me. I was unhappy, defeated, without purpose and meaning. It simply wasn’t my life. I made a decision to change MY life and to live the life I imagined.

After searching in the mirror for myself, asking myself what I wanted, why I wanted it and what I was willing to do to get it, I did my research, I called in some experts I knew in the industry and I began the transformation of my life. As a result of a concentrated focused effort and a commitment to myself and my health, not only did I reach an elite fitness level, which was my original goal, the level to which I changed my mind is Astounding. Everything starts in your mind first and the body and everywhere else second. As I began to strengthen my mind and my spirit, my body followed. I am in the best shape of my life and I live with health in fit-ness as a part of my life every day. I am better at everything in my life and have boundless energy to do all the things I

td leArning nAturAlly needs your support! In the 2012–13 school year 3,678 students between grades K—6 were provided with an unforgettable learning experience in Fish Creek Provincial Park. Through the TD Learning Naturally program, children from 31 economically disadvantaged schools learned firsthand about the wonders of the natural world through programs like Insect Intrigue, Wildlife Cycles, Plant Communities and more.

This essential program does not receive funding from the Provincial Government and its continuation is in jeopardy. The Friends of Fish Creek need your support in helping this program continue. Please consider this opportunity to enrich the life a young person who otherwise would not have been afforded this opportunity. 100% of your generous donation will go directly to funding Learning Naturally and encouraging environmental stewardship in the next generation. You will receive a valuable tax receipt for your donation. For more information about the TD Learning Naturally program or to donate online, please visit www.friendsoffishcreek.org/td-learning-naturally-program or Sundays at 9:00am or 1:15pm.

Reserve early as each group size is limited to 15 participants

Geodesic dome greenhouses use solar thermal energy and thermal mass principles to create a year-round growing climate without the heat produced by fossil fuels and can be easily constructed in rural and urban environments.

Your Official NewsletterCommunity Things to DoBook CluBs in CAlgAry There are good reasons why book clubs continue to thrive, despite changes in literary appetites, demographics and technology. The communal act of reading the same book as someone else and then hotly debating the deep meaning underlying those well-thumbed pages never loses its appeal, especially when those debates are fuelled by a plate of cookies, a platter of cheese or a glass of wine. A few hours in the good company of other book lovers, complete with passionate discussions and snacks, is a fun way to learn and socialize at the same time!

Estimates vary Estimates vary widely on the number of active book clubs in Canada, but it’s a safe bet to say that everybody knows somebody who belongs to a book club. Book club mandates cover a wide spectrum of interests - some geared toward specific genres, others that span a more general range of books. In recent years, even the growth of online book clubs has skyrocketed, making sharing books with like-minded people even easier. You don’t even have to clean the house when it’s your turn to host! Book clubs, both public and private, flourish in every quadrant of the city.

January: late 13c., Ieneuer, from Old North French Genever, Old French Jenvier (Modern French Janvier), attested from early 12c. in Anglo-French, from Latin Ianuarius (mensis) “(the month) of Janus,” to whom the month was sacred as the beginning of the year (see Janus; cf. Italian Gennajo, Provençal Genovier, Portuguese Janeiro). The form was gradually Latinized by c.1400. Replaced Old English geola se æfterra “Later Yule.” In Chaucer, a type-name for an old man. - Courtesy On-Line Etymology Dictionary
