ProjectNo.IDVAITAVEDANTAKOSHA

A Kosha in Sanskrit is the equivalent to a detailed Dictionary of meanings andreferences to terms used for standard reference works by which a students canunderstandwhatispreciselymeantbytheauthorcontextually.TheSanskritlanguageisnotonlyrichinavarietyofmeaningsassociatedwiththeusageofwords, butalsohasaprecisely defined grammar aiding the correct interpretations. Therefore, usage oftechnicaltermsbyphilosopherwouldbecomeunclearandimprecise, unlessaKoshaisreferredtobythestudent.

The three famous Vedanta schools in Indian Philosophy have constantly interactedwitheachotherintheformofdisputationbyscholars, writingsofpolemicalworksandtheirrefutationetc.Dvaitaschoolwhichcamelasthistoricallyhasthebenefitofsomethe greatest thinkers and logicians, who have composed great works like TatparyaChandrika, Nyayamruta etc. The interpretation of philosophical terms in such worksthough apparent to the accomplished scholar of Dvaita Vedanta, can be difficult forstudents. Advaita and Vishishtadvaita schools have already published their Koshas, giving a great advantage in the study and understanding of those systems. It is nownecessary that the students of Dvaita Vedanta should also be provided with such aKosha.

Whileundertakingthiswork,weintendtoachievethefollowingobjectives,bytakingnoteofresultsalreadyachievedbyotherKoshasandfurtherimprovementsthereon:

i. The Kosha will be limited to words having special philosophical orinterpretational significance. Common words which may have no specialsignificance and are used for elaboration of meanings could be convenientlyomitted.

ii. Therewill notonlybeequivalentwordsdescribing themeaning, butusageofthe same word in more than one sense according to context will also beinterlinkedwithindices.

iii. Thewordmeaningswillbegiven inequivalentwords/descriptive sentences inKannadaandEnglishalso,inadditiontoSanskrit.

iv. Descriptiveannotationswillbeprovided, whentherearesignificantdifferencesin the meanings of the same word/s used in different contexts by the sameauthor/schoolorbydifferentauthors/schools.

v. Ineachcase,bibliographical referenceswillbeprovidedbywhich the studentcanlookintotheoriginaltextswheretheusage/meaningisnoticedalongwithcommentaries/sub-commentariesthereon.

The compact edition of Kosha which is expected to deal with approximately 2000words,will be around 2000 pages, in 4 vlumes. The projectwill be completedwithin31stofMarch2015.AftercompletionofthefirstphaseworkwewillpreparedetailedDvaitaKoshavolumeinnearfuture.
