Global food production capacity is sufficient to feed the world’s current population, yet

FAO’s latest estimates indicate that almost 870 million people are undernourished in

terms of energy intake. Efforts to eliminate world hunger are complicated by a number

of complex global challenges, including a rapidly increasing population, urbanization,

globalization and its effects on agriculture, pressure on natural resources, climate

and environmental changes, and a rise in resulting disasters and emergencies.

In the face of these challenges, FAO is focusing its entire work effort on five

overarching objectives:

• Eradicate hunger, together with food insecurity and malnutrition

• Make agriculture more productive, yet more sustainable

• Reduce rural poverty

• Create agricultural and food systems that are at once more inclusive and efficient• Build the resilience of livelihoods to disasters and emergencies

As a specialized UN agency and knowledge organization, FAO has a well-established

and broad-ranging publishing programme, and we are continuing to build on this

with an increasingly dynamic and interdisciplinary range of titles in direct support

of the Organization’s strategic objectives.

In this catalogue you will find a rich body of technical studies, guidelines, outlooks

and topical reports on major issues at the centre of international development

Public Health Risks ofHistamine and otherBiogenic Amines fromFish and FisheryProducts

Report of a joint FAO/WHOExpert Meeting and Histamine

Sampling Tool (version 1.0)

Codex Alimentarius through itsstandards and guidelines aimsto provide countries with tools tomanage food safety issues suchas histamine in fish. Togetherwith guidance on good practices,

different histamine limits have beenestablished by Codex as indicators ofdecomposition and as indicators ofhygiene and handling. However, manyof these limits were established ina pre-risk assessment era and theirscientific basis is unclear. As foodsafety management moves towardsmore risk- and evidence- basedapproaches, there is a need to reviewexisting limits to ensure that theyare scientifically based and take into

account all the available evidence. Atthe request of Codex, FAO and WHOconvened an expert meeting at theFAO headquarters in Rome from 23– 27 July 2012 to address the publichealth risks of histamine and otherbiogenic amines from fish and fisheryproducts. This report summarises theoutcome of that meeting.

Serbia – Sugarsector review

dramatically over the past ten yearsand reached almost 500 000 tonnesin the 2010/11 crop year. Review of jellyfishblooms in theMediterranean andBlack Sea

In the past decade, the media hasreported increasingly high numbersof gelatinous plankton blooms,with thousands of tourists stung,fisheries harmed or even impairedby jellyfish that eat fish eggs andlarvae, and coastal plants stoppedby gelatinous masses. A new typeof human approach to marineecosystems is clearly needed toconfront issues such as jellyfish

blooms. Codex Alimentarius, the process ofapplying the risk analysis conceptoperationally during an emergencyhas not been addressed thoroughly.Some countries do, however,have well-defined proceduresfor assessing, managing andcommunicating food safety risks inthe context of emergency situations,from which best practices maybe derived. Many countries,especially in the developing world,still lack the capacity to produce andreport even the minimal agriculturaldata needed to monitor nationaltrends or inform internationaldebate. The Global Strategy is aground-breaking effort to strengthenagricultural statistics and willprovides a framework for nationaland international statistical systemsto produce and apply the basicdata and information needed in thetwenty-first century.
