Lakes of the Four Seasons

POA Community Manager

Rick Cleveland

If your property is not being maintained in a timely fashion you will receive a warning letter in the mail. The second notice will include a fine and we will have it maintained for you and the charge for doing so will go against your lot.

Property Maintenance in a timely fashion

Lake DrawdownBig Bass Lake and Lake

Holiday will be lowered ap-proximately five feet this fall so the boat launch for Lake Holiday can be replaced. All boats must be removed from both lakes by October 1st this year.

This will be a perfect time for property owners with lakefront properties to make the necessary repairs to their shorelines if needed.Lake Engineering

The Sediment Analysis and Watershed Evaluation Project will begin soon. We have hired Cardno Inc.; an engineering firm located in Walkerton, Indiana. The pur-pose of this project is to col-

lect enough data and infor-mation to help us decide on a long-term plan and budget for future lake and watershed projects.Thursday Night Concerts

The Thursday Night Concerts at the Clubhouse began on June 2nd; the weather has been coopera-tive. A reminder to those at-tending the concerts, you are not allowed to walk into or out of the Clubhouse res-taurant with alcoholic bev-erages. Garbage cans have been placed all around the grounds and I ask concert goers to please use them. July’s Summer Concert ListingJuly 7 - Bam

July 14 - Mr. FunnymanJuly 21 - PawnzJuly 28 - The Allen Wronko Band

All concerts will take place in front of the Clubhouse be-ginning at 7 p.m.July 4th Holiday

The July 4th celebration will take place on Monday and as in year’s past will be hosted by the LOFS Lions on the Clubhouse grounds. The event will be kicked off with a parade beginning at noon starting at South Lake Shore Drive and ending at the Clubhouse parking lot.

I am requesting that there be no throwing of water of any kind from the parade marchers or spectators and please be careful when toss-ing and collecting candy.

The fireworks display, presented by Melrose Pyrotechnics, will begin at dusk on July 4th. The fire-works will again be shot

off over the lake from the Clubhouse grounds. This year music will be synchro-nized with the fireworks. The Clubhouse and upper grounds will be closed all day while the fireworks are setup.

I ask that all residents abide by the Fireworks reso-lution. The resolution is in accordance with Indiana State law and prohibits the use of fireworks in LOFS ex-cept during prescribed times. A copy of the resolution is available on the web site at www.LOFS.org.

The POA Board of Directors has approved charging the $5 donation to all vehicles without POA stickers entering into the community between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on July 4th. The Fire Force will be collecting the fee.Temporary Golf Cart Rental Permits

A reminder to residents who are renting golf carts and using them to get around the community during the Fourth of July holiday week-end. If you are going to do this you must purchase a temporary golf cart permit from the POA office. The fee for this permit is $40 and is good for four days this year. If you are caught driving one of these rental carts without a temporary permit you will be issued a citation with a fine that will cost more than the permit fee. These carts must have working rear tail lights and head lights to be oper-ated on the roads after dark. Thank You, LOFS Departments

Please remember while you are celebrating the holiday, there will be several people working hard for your enjoyment. These people include the Operations Department,

Clubhouse Restaurant Department, Golf Course Maintenance Department, Lakes Department, Pro Shop Department, 19th Hole Restaurant Department, and the Security Department.

Take just a short time out of your day to THANK these people for all of the hard work they put in every year.

I want everybody to have a great July 4th and I encour-age all to be careful and have a SAFE celebration.

Be a responsible pet own-er, pick up its waste

Before you step out of your home to take your dog for a walk, remember to grab a plastic bag and some paper towels; whatever is required to safely and efficiently han-dle and hold pet waste, and pick up the area after they have done their “business.”

Also, do not let your pets run free from your property

to do their duty. Your fellow residents will appreciate this.

Either case is a fineable offense, whether you allow your pet to deposit waste on a neighbor’s or POA prop-erty. Let’s face it, don’t we want all property owners to be “good neighbors”? That virtue needs to extend to pet owners as well. Thanks for your cooperation.

Pet owners expected to be responsible neighbors

Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter is actively recruiting volun-teers to be a part of a move-ment to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The 2016 Lake County Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held on Sunday, September 25, at Lake County Fairgounds, and the Michigan City Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held on Saturday, October 1, at Washington Park.

“Alzheimer’s disease is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented,

cured or even slowed,” said Development Specialist Katie Slater. “Now is the time for northwest Hoosiers to unite in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and take action by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. We need committed leaders to step up to make the 2016 Walk a success.”

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individu-als living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate.

More than 5 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer’s, including

110,000 Hoosiers.For more information

about committee opportuni-ties for either walk, e-mail [email protected] or call 800-272-3900.

State Farm has donated eight computer monitors to St. Mary’s Community Catholic School. Agent Bob Moreth worked to get the new monitors for St. Mary’s.

“As you can imagine, State Farm uses a lot of office sup-plies across the country,” said Moreth. “We just wanted to give back to the communities we live and work in.”

Concert night parking fee for non-decal vehicles will continue for the 2016 concert season.

Lakes of the Four Seasons

Monthly Update

House & Garden

By Timburley EcklundI hope this finds you enjoy-

ing the great outdoors! If you have a little free time on the last Tuesday of the month at noon, stop on up and check us out. We’d love to meet you.

Each month The Lakes of the Four Seasons House & Garden Club enjoys some form of entertainment. This job is done by the vice presi-dent. Throughout the years,

we have had ladies who not only accepted the challenge but have also surprised us each month with the educa-tional, entertaining, and sim-ply irresistible programs.

This brings me to Carol Jeslis, who has done a superb job on finding programs that add joy to the membership. Hats off to you Carol, keep up the great work!

May’s entertainment was

Bernie Glim. You may know him and his band, Bernie Glim and Country Roads. Let me tell you, the ladies were completely astonished at his talent. With his musical styl-ing, Bernie took the ladies to Poland, Italy, Spain, America, and Ireland. He has a great sense of humor and was just a hit with everyone. The ladies sang along, laughed, and at times were speechless when Bernie sang a Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash duo.

When asked what his dream job was, Bernie said, music was his dream job, and he’s doing it!”

The next meeting will be

held on Tuesday, July 26, at noon at the Clubhouse. If you have any questions please call Patricia German at 219-662-4162.

LOFS future firefighters show ‘the right stuff’

The Lake of the Four Seasons Fire Department & Auxiliary hosted their 1st annual “Open House Picnic” on Sunday, June 5, and had a great turnout. We served food for a $1 and offered kids’ games with prizes and had a huge Dalmatian Jumpee.

The highlight of the day

was the “Kids Firefighter Skills Challenge” that was set up by firefighters Jon Buczek, Amanda Stagowski, and Rob Wentz. Those par-ticipating needed to 1) step through a flat ladder carrying a wrapped hose, 2) knock down a cloth door and crawl thru, 3) crawl thru a cone path, 4) drag a body to safe-ty, and 5) use a fire hose to knock down a bucket.

They were rewarded with a sticker patch of ac-complishment. They were assisted by firefighters Phil Buckingham, Edgar Lopez, Ryan Burgess, Kevin Heerema, Chris Diaz, Mike Grelecki, and Jason Gikas.

We plan to repeat the event next year on the first Sunday of June. We thank our sponsors The Little Market, Jewel, Tarimoro in Lake Station, Krazy Flip’N Fun, Wyant Family, Wendy VanDenburgh-McColly, Winfield American, our fire-men and firewomen, and our Fire Auxiliary. If you missed it, please plan on next year.

Come out and support our community’s residents as young as 4 years old as they will take to the water to entertain the crowd on skis, wakeboards and even bare feet! Spectators from the Clubhouse will be able to en-

joy the pig roast as well as the bands that will be performing.

With the help of the Lakes Department, the northern part of Lake Holiday will be ‘no wake’ for this hour long event. Boaters are encouraged to watch the show from their boats but please respect the path of the riders for safety.

Lakes of the Four Seasons

Lakes Department

By Mike Talley,MS4 CoordinatorGoose Relocation

On June 15, 2016, the Lakes Department had its first Goose Roundup and re-location for the season.

Thirty-five geese were rounded up from Big Bass

Lake. They were herded into a large cage on a trailer and transported to Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area in Morocco, IN. The geese were released into their new environment where they will finish out the season. Since most the adult geese will re-

turn to their original nesting area in the spring, next year we may relocate the same geese again.

Then, why relocate them in the first place? It’s all about goose feces. An adult goose can produce between 1 and 2 pounds of feces per day. Multiply that by the 35 relocated geese and that’s a lot of …., well you know what I’m talking about.

We discussed in earlier articles that phosphorus and nitrates are some of the pri-

mary nutrients entering our lakes which cause excessive plant growth. Those plants include various types of al-gae, including Blue Green Algae, which not only looks and smells bad but it can be a health hazard. Geese are responsible for about 20% of these nutrients entering our lakes.

When the geese do their business on the beaches, this produces a whole different problem. For the same rea-son dogs are not allowed on

the beaches, animal feces on the sand contributes to the growth of E-coli and other health hazards. Every morn-ing the Lakes Department uses a tractor to turn over and level out the sand on our beaches. This practice not only makes the beaches look nice, but also exposes the underlining sand to the ultra-violet rays of the sun which kills bacteria includ-ing E-coli. To further help protect the residents our three beaches are tested weekly for

traces of E-coli.The Lakes Department

will be doing another Goose Roundup in a couple of weeks to help further reduce the goose population in the Seasons. Residents can help reduce the numbers of geese in our area. Please do not feed the geese. Feeding the geese only adds to the prob-lem.

For more information on how you can help clean up the lakes see our website at www.lofslakes.com.

By Mike Talley,MS4 CoordinatorGet Involved

The Lakes/MS4 Depar-tment is dedicated to making the entire community’s expe-rience with our lakes as en-joyable and safe as possible.

We cannot make this hap-pen on our own. It will take

the entire LOFS community to pitch in and help. We pa-trol the lakes to keep them safe, work to maintain the appearance and health of our lakes, and we work to limit the pollution entering the lakes. But we can only do so much. Much more can be ac-complished with the help of

the LOFS residents. What you do at home, around the community and on the lakes can make a huge difference.

Get involved. Find out what you can do to help. See us on the web at www.lofs-lakes.com, or on Facebook at LOFS Lakes. Attend month-

ly meetings of the Lakes Enhancement Association held the first Tuesday of the month at the Clubhouse. Read articles in the Seasonal. There is plenty you can do to help.

Clean water starts in your backyard.

As the weather is chang-ing and the boating season is starting up the LOFS Lake Enhancement Association held their first meeting of the year. The LEA is an open fo-rum for residents to come and voice opinions and ideas for our lakes. Lakes Department personnel were on hand to answer questions as well as POA Board members. Residents were made aware

of the ongoing lake and wa-tershed engineering that is currently being done as well as the upcoming (October) Lake Holiday boat launch repair.

Residents are encouraged to attend these monthly meet-ings, which take place at the Clubhouse. For updates find us on Facebook or contact the Lakes Department.

By Doug Weiss, Golf Course Superintendent

The heart of summer has arrived; July is the longest hottest month of the year. This is the month where all the preparation and plan-ning have to come together to create the best playing conditions possible. The ir-rigation system has to be in perfect working order, the equipment has to run and cut

properly, and remember the lessons that we learned from years past. July 2012 was ex-tremely hot and wet which brought on a disease called Pythium Blight. This is the worst disease a golf course can get.

This disease can kill an entire fairway overnight. The disease can be spread by mowers or cart tires. We learned that water has to get

past the surface as fast as possible to give the turf a fighting chance. The spiking of fairways and greens are the most beneficial agronom-ic practice we can do to help the water penetrate. We have also changed the fertilizer program to lower the amount of nitrogen applied to the turf on an annual basis. Now the fertilizer is mainly applied as a foliar spray so it will be ab-sorbed directly into the plant. This also stops any fertilizer leaching into the lakes. These changes will give the turf a fighting chance if it gets real hot and wet.

This summer has been very

dry, therefore I use a mix of technology and experience to decide when and how much we need to irrigate the turf. I have a soil moisture reader that has three inch sensors that penetrate the soil which gives me an accurate reading of the percentage of moisture. I try to maintain the greens at 14% of saturation and the fairways at 22%. I have found that for this golf course this gives me the best compromise between turf health and playability.

Many golfers want the fair-ways as dry as possible so the ball will roll farther off the tee. The issue is the Poa an-nual grass is a shallow rooted

winter annual, which means that it wants to die in the hot summer and come back in the fall. Therefore if it dries out completely it will die, not go dormant like your yard if you don’t water it in the summer. A golf course with dead spots all over the fairways would affect the playability and aes-thetics of the golf course.

The only project I have planned for the month of July is having a contractor clean out the ditch on number 10. The dry conditions will allow the project to be completed with minimal damage to the golf course. Erosion cloth and rip-rap will be installed

to stop the banks from erod-ing into the lake. Any other projects will be completed in the fall.

The July greens commit-tee will be moved to the 11th. This meeting will cover the August meeting as well since it is half way through the month. I hope you enjoy all of the 4th of July festivities and celebrating 50 years of this great community. Please watch the golf course for vandalism and stay safe.

By Renate Sahulcik,Club President

The Keen-Agers will be having their July meet-ing on the 21st at the LOFS Clubhouse. The bar will open at noon and a delicious luncheon will be served at 1:00. Entertainment is sched-uled for 2, after a short meet-ing and a 50/50 raffle adjourn-ment will be around 3 p.m.

Besides the third Thursday of the month meetings, the club attends plays and gam-bles at an area casino. A day trip to Chicago is planned and also a week long journey; this year it is Myrtle Beach in September.

POA - July 2016

The Church of the Four Seasons United Methodist (COFS) is pleased by the growth of the Community Garden. The garden boasts over 1,200 square feet of raised garden beds with plants abounding. There are more than 50 tomato plants, cucumbers, squash, beans, onions, potatoes, collards and much more, growing in

the garden. Our mission is to provide 100% of the produce to families in our local com-munity.

The produce will be avail-able at the church beginning July 12 on Tuesdays and Thursdays – call the church office for times at 219-663-7803. Families that may not have access to fresh produce are welcome to drive in and

pick it up for free. If you would like to be a part of the project, contact the church office at 219-663-7803. We are also seeking sponsors to help with the cost of the proj-ect.

Visit our website at www.cofsunitedmetodist.com or call the church office for sponsorship information.

Women’s Golf Association

The Lakes of the Four Seasons Women’s Golf Association will host their “Sixth Annual Harvest Time Garage, Craft & Vendor Sale” at the lower LOFS Clubhouse parking lot on Saturday, September 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A rain date has been scheduled for Saturday, September 17.

This annual WGA event provides an opportunity for community residents and

others to take advantage of this convenient location for displaying, sale and purchase of garage sale items, craft pieces and/or general mer-chandise.

Due to the growing pop-ularity of this event and limited number of booths, space will be reserved on a first-come, first-paid basis. Rent for an approximate booth space of 10’ x 20’ is only $20. Vendors will need

to provide their own tables, chairs, and display racks and the WGA provides the space. All applications need to be received by August 30.

For more information or

to secure a booth applica-tion, contact Debby Gulley at 219-305-2624 or access the application published on the back page of this issue of The Seasonal.

By Craig Philp,Director of Security

The first four days of July will begin the celebration of our Community’s 50th Anniversary; which means the 4th of July weekend just got a little longer for some people, including this depart-ment. I want to remind those who are planning to drive around from party to party to not over-indulge themselves with alcohol. Your safe and responsible actions could prevent those around you in-cluding yourself from getting seriously hurt.

As a reminder, there will be a group collecting money on the 4th of July once again at the main gate. This group will be collecting $5 from all non-residents entering the community during the hours of 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. We ask all residents who are planning to have company to advise your guests of this fee and further ask them to have patience during this busy timeframe of people entering the com-munity.

We want to wish everyone a SAFE and HAPPY 4th of July.

Use of FireworksWe need to remember

our combat veterans during the 4th of July, especially when it comes to the use of fireworks. There is a good chance there is someone living near you that suffers from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder.) The loud un-expected explosion from the use of fireworks can be the catalyst in triggering a PTSD episode.

I have talked with some veterans who are suffering from PTSD and I found that it is not that they want every-one to stop using fireworks, it’s more they just want to be aware that it is going to hap-pen so they are not surprised by the loud noise.

Take the time to find out if there are any veterans living

near you, and talk to them. Ask if there is a particular type of firework that is upset-ting to them; let them know when you plan to light them off, and maybe choose an area to light them that is less likely to alarm them. It’s the least you can do for the ones that fought and are still fight-ing for you!

Under Resolution num-ber 2007-06-11 the Lakes of the Four Seasons Board of Directors has set some limi-tations when it comes to the discharge of fireworks within the community. Discharging fireworks on POA property is strictly prohibited and these properties include, but are not limited, to streets, parks, golf course, public grounds, and the lakes within the boundaries of the Lakes of

the Four Seasons. Please also be aware of

the dates through the State of Indiana for the use of ap-proved fireworks to be dis-charged within the Lakes of the Four Season Property Owners Association: be-tween 5:00p.m., and two (2) hours after sunset on June 29th, 30th, July 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and end-ing date of July9th. On the 4th of July Indiana State ap-proved fireworks can be used between the hours of 10:00 a.m., and midnight.

If officers locate anyone discharging fireworks after the approved hours set by the State of Indiana, they will be issued a warning for the first offense. Any and all other of-fense by the same subjects will result in citations being

issued and items being con-fiscated for destruction. Covenant Letters

By now, some residents within the community will have received property viola-tion letters from this depart-ment. These letters serve as a written warning notifying you that there are certain violation(s) on the property that need immediate atten-tion. The letter does not in-clude an attached fine, but merely a timeline to have the violation remedied.

If, while following up on the properties with visible violations, it is found that the residents who have not taken actions to fix, replace, repair, or clean up the violation, ci-tations will then be issued in accordance to the POA ad-opted Fine Structure.
