CIEC was created in January 2011, as a result of

merging two research centres with 7nancial

support of the Foundation for Science and

Technology (FCT): CESC e CIFPEC, research units

317 and 644, respectively. The CIEC director is

Prof. Graça S. Carvalho and the deputy director is

Prof. Fernanda Leopoldina Viana.

Since both centres have been working in the child

studies 7eld for quite a long time, although in

slightly di<erent scopes, it was considered

strategic to join forces in a single centre, keeping

the same valences and trying to create synergies

between the groups from one and the other

centre. Thus, this new CIEC keeps as its object of

study the child, as well as training and practices of

professionals working with children, be they

educators, teachers, nurses, or other educational,

health or social service.

Being the scienti7c object of study the child – not

really a disciplinary 7eld – the study of child is

approached in a multidisciplinary way, and when

possible, interdisciplinary. The internal

organization of the CIEC re@ects this holistic

perspective of the child studies.
